“Really poor - very disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2008

We have just returned from a very disappointing stay at this hotel. The website really misrepresents the accomodation and having booked a deluxe cottage room with a sea view and an outside terrace , we were annoyed to discover a poky room in a large house "cottage" , with no patio or outdoor seating , and instead of a sea view we had a view of the back of a golf course through filthy dirty windows. In order to move to something else, we had to pay another $100 dollars a night - and still no outside space so when our baby went to sleep we were confined to indoors. The place was run by young kids on summer work experience and unfortunately it felt this way. The pool area was crowded and noisy. The alternative private beach was very poor, dirty with old shabby loungers.

It is a shame because the hotel has a great location in Cape Cod but we would definitely never recommend it to anyone!

We always regret when our guests’ expectations are not met with regard their room comfort. Based on the size and age of the Chatham Bars Inn resort, accommodations vary quite a bit in terms of room configurations, location, size and number of rooms per cottage, be the category “property” or “ocean view”. Sometimes the specific guest requirements are not properly specified in the reservation record or unforeseen occupancy changes prevent us from assigning a better room. In any case, we sincerely apologize for the disappointment we caused with the accommodations.

Unfortunately there were also some disappointing performances among the seasonal staff this year, especially in the pool and beach area. These individuals will not be returning next year. For the next summer season we plan to add lot more furniture, umbrellas, beach amenities and food and beverage services for a more comfortable
and enjoyable pool and seaside guest experience.

We had three rooms, for a two night get away. We landed in the spa suites, which have their own quiet, secluded swimming pool: perfecty for some family time. The bedding is excellent!

Arriving direct from London via Boston airport, we were informed at 9.30pm it would be impossible to get anything to eat - so we sat on the terrace, had a cocktail, and got bitten by mosies instead. Our rooms were definitely not what we ordered and after complaining the next day , we were transferred to the most luxurious Spa suites. Now they were just brilliant!

The hotel is clearly a regular instituion for some American families who return year after year. It is though staffed throughout by keen youngsters who do not always understand or anticipate. The main pool area is noisy in July which is a bonus for Spa suite customers who have their own dedicated pool.

Finally, I must tell of an amazing incident which happened as we alighted breakfast on the first morning. The young waitress collared me after I had signed the bill by asking me if she had done something to displease me as I had not left a tip! I replied that it had been a self service buffet breakfast and as such she had not warranted a tip ! THE CHEEK of the young staff for asking did amuse us at the time........

This Hotel really could do with a dose of good management as the location, setting and facilities are really excelllent.

We appreciated the compliment on our Spa Suites, but would like
to apologize that the initially assigned room was not satisfactory.

During our main season we usually triple the size of our year-round staff. We are lucky that many of our best seasonal employees
return every summer, however, by necessity, a certain portion is always first time new hire. Despite our intensive training efforts, some years we are just luckier than others. This year the caliber of temporary personnel. specifically at the pool and beach area, was not as good as last year and some guests have commented on this. The incident with the young waitress questioning the lack of a tip was as rare as it was inexcusable. We apologize on her behalf, such behavior did not reflect the standards of courtesy we and our guests expect from all of staff members.

Stayed at the Chatham bars in for a week and went expecting the best from a highly regarded hotel. While the location was nice, everything else fell far below my expectations. The service was extremely young, poorly trained, and generally seemed apathetic toward serving you. Right from the onset I was directed to the beach grille for lunch by the front desk; however, I found it had closed on a schedule an hour before. The terrace in the front of the hotel had a nice view, but only appetizers were served there, and trying to flag down a server was a nightmare. One day we sat for 45 minutes to even be given a menu as servers and the manager alike ignored us. For the same price I could've waited until the winter and stayed at the five star Breakers in Palm Beach. I won't be going back to the CBI anytime soon.

We stayed for a week, at discounted price, still not worth it. Will never return. Why this is bad for families with kids: to get to the pool, beach or tennis courts, you have to cross a very BUSY street with traffic including Mack trucks, garbage trucks and construction vehicles. Hotel is overcrowded meaning you wait wait wait for food. There are frequently no seats at the pool, and even if you find a seat, there are only 7 umbrellas for shade. When they run out, they just shrug and say you have to get there earlier in the morning. You can't even pay extra to get a cabana at that point b/c there are too few of them. All recreation costs extra: tennis, biking (only adult bikes are free), boating. Why this is bad for couples or singles: screaming kids and babies everywhere, menu selection is terrible (repeats at all "different" hotel restaurants), beach is not nice compared to others on cape cod, horrible service (place is largely run by teens on summer break), concierge mainly gives you resources but does not book things for you. This is a "Leading Resort of the World" and I cannot believe it. It should not be designated as such. Other places with this title do not have any of the chaos, lack of amenities and bad service that is present at Chatham Bars Inn.

  • Liked — it's close to main street, that's the ONLY good thing
  • Disliked — lack of amenities, overpriced, rude service, overcrowded, long waits for everything

After spending two days at the nearby Wequasett Resort, the Chatham Bars Inn was very disappointing. Our room was upstairs
in a dark lodge. It was clean but small with very poor lighting.
Nothing worked intuitively from the shower to the switches in the room. The wireless internet connection did not work, but they did respond and corrected the problem. The lobby was drab and in need of a facelift.
The pool was a disaster with too many screaming kids and a poorly maintained pool house. The dreadful, loud music that invades the pool area is even piped underwater. There is no escape or peace. The beach was quieter, but the lounges and umbrellas were in terrible condition with no beach service.
We had a so-so lunch at the Boathouse. The setting was pretty
but the food was not very exciting. In the evening, we had drinks
on the patio of the lobby. It was not an improvement. The waitstaff were very slow, inexperienced and inept. We decided to go into town for dinner and left the next day.

Upon looking at the website, we had high expectations for this hotel. Chatham is a beautiful area and it was a gorgeous weekend. Unfortunately, our stay was severely lacking in the customer service realm. We were staying for a wedding and our room was not ready until the time the wedding started. The staff at the front desk when we checked in seemed completely disinterested with our concerns. (The wedding was at this hotel). The pool's hours were limited and there was no beverage nor food service at the pool. I would not recommend this hotel as they seem to see themselves as being above customer service.
