After reading several less than positive reviews on Trip Advisor, we were a bit skeptical about our family vacation to CBI. Happily, our experience was much different than the reviews we read. Our CBI vacation was nothing less than wonderful! Yes, while the property is older, it is not "dated". CBI is historic offering a variety of amenities and accommodations. (Note: accommodations are in both the original inn and the newer cottages. Our "Cranberry Cottage" was very new and perfect in terms of size for our family of five older teens and adults. ) If you are looking for flashy, go elsewhere. The CBI represents the best of Cape Cod. It is a terrific marriage of pampered luxury and simplicity. The location to town and the sea is perfect. The staff, accommodations, quality of food and beverage, property and amenities exceeded our expectations. The price point, overall, is exactly what we would expect for the outstanding experience we enjoyed. Admittedly, a quote of $600 for a beach fire was ridiculous. (The last minute quote, however, was not from the concierge and we can only hope was incorrect.) Like others, we have traveled the world and have visited a variety of properties. We have learned to appreciate each property in terms of its own culture and elegance. The Chatham Bars Inn is an experience to be enjoyed and offers its guests the opportunity to enjoy an elegant era gone by. We look forward to returning next year.

My family all went to CBI again this year and we had a wonderful time! This trip incuded my parents, aunt and uncle, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and my own family. We stayed in the cottages on the bluff and the view was magnificent. The staff was fantastic and our rooms were always spotless. Room services was also very prompt when you needed a late night snack.

The kids camp was perfect for our 6 and 9 year old nephew and niece. They loved the pool, the games that were always going on at the South Lawn, the beach, and the boat ride to Outer Beach where you could see so many seals!

There was also lots to do for my teenage daughter and son. They loved the pool and beach. My son also loved the fishing excursion on the StarFish where he caught a beautiful striped bass. They could just also walk down to Chatham center for the shops.

I definitely recommend the boating excursions. The fishing was great and some of the adults went on the sunset champagne cruise on the CBI yacht. We even saw whales just outside the bay during our boating.

For the active people, there is also lots to do. The gym at the Inn is nice and they also had Zumba and Yoga. My aunt loved the tennis courts and she played several times this week . There is a golf course right next door that we also took advantage of. We were going to go kayaking but ended up running out of time but we'll definitely try that next year. I would also like to try the spa next year as it looks like a fantastic place to relax.

We particularly like the Beach House for a casual lunch and they had entertainment so you could each lunch and listen to some great music on the deck. Lunch on the veranda is great with the views of the ocean and the breakfast buffet is great. Dinner in the Main Dining room is also a wonderful affair.

We would recommend this to anyone that is considering a vacation on Cape Cod. The resort and its location in Chatham are perfect, the staff is first rate and the list of activities are great!

Room Tip: I would try for a room in the cottages, especially on the bluffs because the views are fantastic.

Every need and whim was attended to at the Chatham Bars Inn. The grounds are impeccably landscaped and cared for, providing outstanding color contrast and enhancing the cottage privacy while maximizing the view. Our cottage actually wasn't ready when we checked in but that was no problem. We strolled down to the Beach House Grill and enjoyed snacks and drinks. Our room was ready and bags delivered by the time we finished. It's what we had planned for the afternoon anyway. Service on all levels from house keeping to restaurants was very good. We went out on the lobster boat one day and had a great time. Did the bay fishing excursion another day-didn't catch anything but it was a great outing on the water. Also took advantage of the Inn's trolley, which will take you all around the Chatham area. The trolley driver was very knowledgeable. Good for a quick tour or to get somewhere close without walking. We took the evening boat to Orleans for dinner at Joe's (off site restaurant-good food and a nice break from seafood). This is a great way to tour the area from the water but don't dawdle in the restaurant because you really want to get back to Chatham before dark. Navigating the bay's sand bars can be tricky in the dark-but the boat driver handled it quite well. The boat skippers were all quite skilled. The shuttle boat to the outer beach requires skill to load and unload on a sand bar but they all handled it quite well. Make sure you get to the outer beach for great beach combing and actual surf on the ocean side. If you watch the Discovery Channel than you know there are large sea creatures in the region. Stay on the bay side of the sand bar if this bothers you.We dined at the Beach House (have the lobster roll and make sure you do the clambake. Make reservations early for the clambake for best and freshest selection. Food selection tends to slack off towards the end, which is what happens at most buffet type set ups. Also really enjoyed the Sacred Cod restaurant inside the inn. The main dining hall was also good, but if you eat in the Dining room you should order several appetizers or plan to eat beforehand or afterwards. We had appetizers and dessert with dinner. The food was excellent, it just was not enough for me. Ended up ordering bar food later in the evening to tide me over. The dress code (collared shirt/no shirts) in the main Dining Room was also unevenly enforced. I arrived in nice dress shorts (not cut off or swim suit) and the requisite collared shirt but was sent away to change into long pants. Not a problem, my fault-I should have checked. But the next night there was a gentleman wearing similar shorts and being served in the Dining Room. A little bothersome- but I'm over it now. Coleen at the concierge desk was most helpful and made sure all our arrangements were in order. The Chatham Bars Inn can be a little pricey during peak season but you certainly get what you pay for: they will take good care of you in an unrivaled Cape Cod setting. I truly didn't have a care in the world. We were sorry to leave and plan to return.

Room Tip: Cottages are more private than rooms in the Inn and quieter than accomodations on th beach.

The Chatham Bars inn is filled with old-world charm. The Inn and the grounds are kept in mint condition. The staff is polite, friendly and helpful. There are a number of restaurants - one formal and a few casual. The food was fantastic! If you are so inclined, you can participate in a wide variety of daily activities; truly, there is something for everyone. However, relaxing on the beach is also a perfect way to spend the day.

I was hesitant about our visit due to the trip advisor but really it was great. The amenities were great ( we stayed in one of the cottages) and my two children had a great time. The pool was great and the resort fee was unremarkable. People have to understand you are going on vacation and you are going to spend money. It was well worth it. Staff was very attentive and excellent. The concierge was not so friendly but Jeremy at the pool was awesome. My daughter won the cannonball competition.
Very kid friendly and we would go back. Dont believe all the crap on trip advisor. You will have a good time.

Our stay at Chathams Bars Inn in July got off to a rocky start. When we arrived is mid-afternoon, we were told the rooms would be ready at 4 pm, then 4:30 pm, then 5 pm, then 5:30 pm. No cold drinks offered during the wait. Check-in time is 4 pm. What to do on a sunny summer day after a long drive with 2 children and 4 adults, but to wait and watch one of your three days of respite dissipate into the sunset. We were offered late check-out or a free breakfast as compensation. Our children were given a room first, advertised as a cottage, but actually it was an upstairs room in a cottage, with no expanded facilities ($800/night with tax). Our room, also in an upstairs cottage, was bare bones (Holiday Inn+) and so tiny we could barely squeeze in a cot for one of the children ($700/night with tax and fees). Rooms were not in proximity so kids could not visit each other easily. The setting is beautiful, the lobby, outdoor porch and lounge areas are lovely, and the breakfasts are good. The beach right in front of the hotel is unpalatable as it is parallel to a boat channel and the sand appears stained with oil, but the hotel offers an free boat ferry to the Bar on the National Seashore, manned by very hospitable staff. This sand bar and its beaches are remarkably beautiful, among the finest vistas and beaches I've ever beholden (these include Bali, Indonesia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, Atlantic and Pacific coasts, etc). We were awed by the pristine beaches on the Bar, children and adults alike and spent as much time as possible exploring it, inclduiong the absolutely deserted Atlantic side. The kids went on a "pirate tour" organized by the Hotel - a high point for them. The restaurant and pool bar served good food, (even though lobsters were overcooked at the clam bake). The staff are terrific in every capacity and helpful: one of the children is a fussy eater, and when a waitress noticed I was trying to coax him into eating a hamburger, she made an origami swan for him as a treat if he finished his portion. (He did). Another went into the kitchen and located a cookie for him on another day. The pool and deck are pleasant and well designed for a range of ages. All in all, the Chatham Bars Inn is very pleasant and a lovely place to offer for families. It needs several improvements: (1) the rooms, locations, sizes and facilities inside the rooms should be available at booking online or on the phone, so folks spending $800/night are not expecting much more than reality. (2) The concierge service ladies are not accurate in their statements. (3) On three occasions, they condradicted each other, to me "clam bake is sold out-no it is not", "pirate tour is not running - yes it is", "best beaches - no not best beaches". (4) Hostesses at reception should be trained to welcome guests when rooms are not ready, as in a 5-star or a Regent Seven Seas Cruise. "can I offer you a drink while you wait?"; here is where you can change so you can go swimming. We'll bring the keys to the pool". That said, it is good hotel with potential to be exceptional.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask about room sizes and locations. Rooms in hotel require crossing a busy road to get...

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and others on Trip Advisor. I am sorry to learn that your vacation at Chatham Bars Inn got off to a rocky start due to a delayed check in. Coming out of a busy 4th of July holiday weekend, we did experience a number of late departures during that period resulting in a delay with new arriving guests, specifically on 7/5 and 7/6. I am also sorry to hear that we were not able to extend an additional service such as a drink on our patio or in the lobby lounge. It is not often that we experience a multitude of late check outs, however I know we could have done better with informing your family of the room status ahead of time.

I also wanted to thank you for the kind comments on our property, facilities, staff and activities. Specifically, I will look forward to sharing your feedback regarding the pirate cruises and boat shuttle to the outer beach area with our recreation department. Both continue to be a great success for us with families and adults alike who truly enjoy these services. Where our beach is a relatively small area as well as a busy channel for commercial boating, this is why we provide shuttle service to the outer beach where the overall experience is far better as well as a beautiful, peaceful setting.

In closing, we plan to have a look at your candid suggestions regarding room size, our concierge services and accuracy of information, and some additional training on the finer details with our dining hosts.

Thanks again for your detailed accounts of this past July’s visit and we hope to welcome your family again in the future.

Truly,

Michael Briggs
