“Good location, poor service and value for money.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2010

We stayed at the Wayside Inn for 3 nights in July as part of our trip to the East coast. We paid over twice as much for this hotel as for others we stayed in in NY and Boston and felt that it did not offer us the same standard of service or facilties. Although our initial contact with reception was positive when we checked in, for the rest of our stay not once did any of the receptionists make eye contact or ask us how our stay was...not even a smile! There were no tea or coffee making facilities in our room, no bottles of water, and the free tea and coffee at reception was only available during breakfast hours.
We did have dinner in The Wild Goose restaurant twice and both times experienced good service and good food, so would recommend this.
Our room overlooked the main street and on the last night (Saturday) we would hear a lot of noise for most of the night. We would have mentioned it at check out but as nobody appeared at all interested in how our stay was we left it. You pay for the location which was right in the middle of Chatham, but we would not return there as it just didn't offer value for money or attentive customer service.

My wife and I booked the Valentines day weekend package. We stayed in the inn Friday and Saturday nights.
We really enjoyed our stay in room 215. The room has a king size bed. The wireless internet connection was very good in that room. A couple of years age we stayed in a room across the hall and the internet service was poor.
The room isn't huge but we were satisfied. The bathroom is a good size.
The only complaint I have about the room is that from time to time we would hear a low steady banging noise. I'm not sure if it was from something mechanical in the kithchen or music from the floor above us or what.
Since we really liked the room otherwise I will ask about the noise before we stay there again. However I would still ask for that room again even with the noise.
The Valentines package worked very well for us. I wrote more about it in my review of the Wild Goose Tavern, the restaurant in the inn. The package was definitely cheaper than it would have been to buy each thing separately. One of the things in the package was a beautiful vase of roses that was left in our room the first day.
We really enjoyed the Wayside Inn and Chatham and the beaches even though it was much cooler in February than in the summer or fall when we usually vacation on the Cape. The rates are a lot less in February too!

there was nothing charming or friendly about our stay. The breakfast was horrible. The staff was not helpful when we asked for driving directions to the next town they assisted me by using Mapquest - I could have done that!
Not the expereince we were hoping for, rooms were very cookie cutter.

Friendly and accomodating staff. Great central location on the main street. Many beaches a short drive. Breakfast was advertised as continental but included hot dishes and omelets made to order. A short walk to buy a paper in the morning and coffee on the patio. Very reasonable and very clean

If you like rubbing elbows with the rich and beautiful, then you'll love Chatham. And if you like being in the center of action, then Chatham Wayside is the place to be. Situated at ground zero in Chatham's quaint and charming business district, the Wayside offers a tremendous home base resort to enjoy the Cape's beaches and attractions. But be prepared to open your wallet. Chatham is not for the economy minded. Our $400 per night room was modestly small, but remember, you're paying for the location, not the room. And it's half price of what you would be paying at the Chatham Bar's Inn around the corner.

The Wayside is situated on Main Street, however the main entrance and lobby is accessed by a driveway on the north side of the building, so the lobby is really in the back, along with all the rooms and swimming pool. The Main Street side is for the Inn's restaurant and gift shop.

We only had a few small complaints, including the fact that the Inn does not accept American Express for some strange reason. Our room was "trash can challenged" because the cans were too small and the plastic liners were only half the side of the cans. The air conditioning fan also had a tendency to "pulse" rather than hum, which we found a little disconcerting.

Located right next door to the Wayside is a great little place called the Chatham Cookware Cafe that is a very popular place to pick up cold and hot drinks and sandwiches. Be sure to visit if you a looking for a casual bite to eat.

Two suggestions before visiting. First, it's well known that Massachusetts has the worst street and directional signs in the nation. Do yourself a favor and invest in a GPS for your car. It will save you a ton of time and aggravation. Second, if you're looking to get in some beach time, be sure to bring a large umbrella because there are no shade trees on the public beaches. The public beaches are a few blocks south of the Wayside, the largest being across the street from the lighthouse. There is a "secret" and beautiful small public beach near the end of Holway Street. You can find it by looking for two black metal posts and following an overgrown path to the beach. Only a few people know about it and it's not publicized by the town. There's an Inn located on Holway called Surfside Motor Inn a few steps from the beach and very reasonably priced. I don't see any reviews on TripAdivsor for the Surfside, but you can do a Google lookup.

All in all, the three nights we stayed were very enjoyable and we would happily recommend the Wayside.

The inn has been recently renovated. It was tastefully done -- decor is lovely, and everything is spotless.

Housekeeping staff -- fantastic.

Location is excellent since you can walk to everything. Their restaurant (Wild Goose Tavern) is excellent, and the food is much improved since a few years ago.

The entire staff is helpful and friendly, especially Mark at the front desk and Shane. We will cetainly return again and again!

My husband and I just spent a lovely and romantic weekend at the Chatham Wayside Inn. We chose the Inn for its central location, pool and the fact that you can walk to the beach. We took advantage of a summer special package that included dinner and two breakfasts at the restaurant in the Inn. Overall it was an excellent. It is not top of the line luxury, based on the thread count and pillows, but then again it isn't the $600-$900 a night hotels that can be found in Chatham. We upgraded to a King room with a patio. A wonderful surprise is that we were literally next door to the town park with boasts a very popular Friday town band and singalong. Imagine how lucky we felt to be able to sip wine in our adirondack chairs on our patio listening to the band. The room was large, well appointed and comfortable, although the beds were a little softer than our firm one at home. The pool is small, but very clean and inviting. The hotel also recently underwent a major renovation and everything feels so clean and new. I highly recommend it as a centerpiece for your weekend getaway. The central location cannot be beat and what a fun town with great restaurants and shops. One warning for families traveling is that they do NOT recommend swimming at the Light House beach (the one 15 minute walk away) because of dangerous undercurrents. Bring your bikes and plan to go to a New England Baseball game. What a fun Americana and New England weekend.
