We stayed right at the end of the holiday season, so Chatham was quiet and the hotel not overly busy. Our room was large, spacious and cleaned daily and, despite overlooking the main street, nice and quiet. Service was great and staff polite and friendly - the buffet breakfast we had opted for was varied and more than catered for our needs. There was lots of information available for the local sights and attractions and staff were keen to help out with queries. Free wi-fi and a pc located in the lobby for guests' use. Loved it.

Good: right on main street in chatham so you can walk to everything and you dont have to try to find parking. The street parking looked terrible. The rooms were spacious and clean. For being on the main street it was very quiet once you got into the hotel. Fresh coffee every morning was great. Lots of food choices in walking distance. Had a great fitness center.

Bad: very pricey for what i thought was a good room but nothing to write home about. We stayed for 3 nights and our pizza box, empty wine bottles and other larger pieces of trash were not taken out of the room the whole time we were there. There are no fridges in the rooms, not a big deal but its common these days to have them. We were there in July so this isnt a knock on the hotel but the streets were PACKED all day everyday. So if you want a super secluded retreat i would go off the main street.

Much larger than it first appears from Main Street, this inn has it all - exceptional restaurant, personal service, and within walking distance of shops and sights in Chatham. Our room overlooked a garden full of blooming hydrangea of all sizes, poppies, and the shrub roses that are everywhere in Cape Cod. The room was very spacious with a sitting area and more than adequate bath. Would definitely put this on my list for a return visit, both Chatham and the Inn.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back away from the main Inn building and the street would be quieter and more private.

You had best be going come hurricane Irene or death. We held a prepaid reservation for only 36 hours before it became apparent that we would not be able to get back to Atlanta if we went to Cape Cod the weekend of the hurricane. We called to cancel the reservation since my husband could not risk being unable to travel home to see patients Monday morning. All flights Sunday in the area were cancelled. Thought we would plan another weekend to the Wayside Inn with the prepaid room. The manager had absolutely no consideration for our plight. She did not offer a voucher or one night penalty. They made a quick $832.75 for absolutely nothing. Unbelievable!

Despite the fact that a hurricane is coming and we offered to accept a credit they were totally inflexible and said we lose our money--3 night stay $1500.00 as they do not allow cancellations except if 21 days in advance.
We indicated we would come even at an off time so they would not lose the revenue. THey insisted if we did not come during the days we reserved even with a hurricane predicted we lose $1500--for 3 nights we reserved.

My family and I love Chatham (hence my moniker). We were unable to get a second night at our favorite hotel, Pleasant Bay Village last weekend and tried Chatham Wayside. We left feeling very much like a number in a somewhat empty environment.

The pluses: great central downtown location, very clean, nice decor in room, convenient restaurant and parking.

The minuses: this could be a Hampton Inn or a cruise ship - very sterile (hardly any artwork on walls) and unfriendly. I did a little "survey" where I noticed whether the front desk staff would say "good afternoon" or anything to greet me as I entered the lobby. No such luck.

We much prefer Pleasant Bay Village, where the manager and staff warmly greet us with a nice genuine hug and "hi Lynn!"

Chatham Wayside is not bad, it's just not the kind of environment we like.

We had a wonderful stay and would like to return. Overall, this Inn has a lot to offer. Although the Inn appears to have undergone some recent upgrades to the rooms with floral decor and fabrics, there are a few things that really need upgrading, at least that was the case in the room we stayed in.

The Pros:

The Inn appeared to be very well-run. The front desk was always staffed, very friendly, and helpful. Check-in and out were hassle-free and efficient.

Our room was very clean and had a lovely large private balcony, with comfy new chairs and a small table. The balcony faced Gould Park next door and we dined-in and enjoyed an old fashioned band concert from there one night.

The WIFI in the room was very fast, and we had no problem logging onto it.

The hotel was in an excellent location in the heart of town, within walking distance to shops, dining, and the beach if you don't mind a 20 minute stroll carrying your beach towel.

The informational binder in the room was very complete with plenty of detail regarding the area, including some info on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as well.

The "Wild Goose Tavern" had delicious food. We had the cranberry chicken salad sandwich and a turkey club wrap for lunch and really enjoyed the food and service. There were extra towels provided in the bathroom so we didn't need to ask for more.

Parking was free and easy to find in the hotel lot. The grounds were well-maintained, clean and attractive. The common areas of the Inn have been modernized and were attractive (a little misleading because the rooms were not as new looking as the lobby).

The Cons:

Our #1 problem with the room was with the bedding. The mattress and foam pillows had clearly seen the end of their useful service life. For the price, we expected a pillow-top or modern style 15" thick mattress. The mattress in our room was a flimsy old fashioned "Englander" hote/motel 8" thick mattress. It was not possible to roll over, without causing the other person to bounce around as if on a trampoline -- we got no sleep at all. The pillows were flat and provided little support. We loved the Inn but won't consider returning until the bedding is upgraded.

There were new wooden blinds in the room but they were completely useless for keeping out the sunlight in the morning. Sunrise is at 6:00 a.m. in August, so this was another problem that kept us from being able to sleep.

The third issue with sleep was the noise at night from what appeared to be furniture moving around downstairs. It appears that our room may have been over the dining room of the tavern and furniture was dragged around in the middle of the night to clean the floors after the restaurant closed.

There was no coffee maker or tea in the room, and the free morning coffee in the lobby was just ok.

Breakfast was not included with the room rate.

There wasn't a fridge in the room for keeping beverages and snacks cool (if there was, it was well hidden somewhere).

No desk in the room, and electrical outlets were mostly located behind heavy furniture so it was difficult to recharge cell phones and etc.

Our room had one small wastebasket in the bathroom and one small one in the room itself, which wasn't enough to hold empty water bottles, cups and newspapers. They really should have at least one more wastebasket.

The air conditioner is set to 71F and a note on it says not to set it below 70F or the unit will freeze.

The room keys were old fashioned metal keys, instead of more secure modern programmable key cards.

The bathroom was very clean and adequate, but appeared dated, with a single corian sink, limited counter space, and a fiberglass tubfitter style unit for the bath.
