We camped at the group campsite in Mohawk State Forest this labor day weekend and had a really great time. Site is away from the busy roads, no rangers to tell you to go to bed at 10.
And I never seen pines that tall! many mushrooms and good trails for hiking, great road-biking area.

I like the views from this state forest, some nice short hikes for kids. Good campground. Small natural "pool" - more like a man made pond filled with water from the river, clear and clean. Good base camp area for enjoying the attractions in Charlemont.

After reading the raving reviews for this campground, we were excited to find a last-minute spot! The ranger on duty was friendly, the trees beautifully tall, and our site right along the river spacious and clean. The only downside was a big one: a large group of people were gathered at our neighbor's site, playing very loud music from their pickup truck. Now we're sympathetic to people trying to have a good time, as long as it's not with obvious disregard to others. But hey, it was way before quiet time (at 10), so we set up our tent, and made dinner. The neighbors and their kids kept cutting through our site, almost brushing our backs, even though we asked them very politely to use the path instead. Long story short, the music kept going, the drinking kept going, and people were getting louder instead of quieter, even after quiet time. No rangers drove by that night at all. Eventually my husband yelled from our tent, which helped a bit. The next day we complained to the ranger, who told us he had warned these people twice. Luckily for us they left that night, leaving us with the quiet, scemic campground we had hoped for. It appeared our neighbora had reserved a whole bunch of sites next to each other to have a group vacation. Too bad for us. Of course, this could happen anywhere. But with increased evening patrols by rangers, this could have been a relaxed weekend out for everyone involved.

I have been here before and that is why I came back. This is great no frills camping. Woods are so pretty, love the tall pines. They do have bears so they are prepared and offer bear lockers. If you come here go for a nice hike, guarantee you will love it.
