Dance performances can be uneven, but for another amazing season, the variety of dance at Jacob's Pillow continues to inspire and impress. We are almost half way through, so be sure to get up toe the Berkshires to see at least one show. Classic ballet to off beat modern expressionist outta da box wild stuff - the dance is consistently top of its game. Last week it was the Hong Kong Ballet - 16 of the strongest most graceful dancers beautifully choreographed that I have ever seen. This week it is Bill T Jones. Cant wait.
Since there are two stages performing, one in the Ted Shawn theatre and one in the smaller Doris Duke, the best of us will get back to the Pillow two times a week for two performances. And we will try to get there early to catch the In Side Out performance takes place on the dance platform overlooking the mountains before the main stage events. Tho' uneven, these more casual outside experiences are free and an opportunity for aspiring dancers to be seen. It is great fun to be watching dance - inside and out.
In a few short weeks, when Labor Day has passed, the season will be over and the quiet of the barns and barracks will return - an eerie silence in these hills compared to the constant bustle and energy that is on the Pillow campus now.

Thanks for such a thorough review, and for attending so many Pillow performances. The Inside/Out performances you mention are Wednesdays-Saturdays at 6:15pm (this year through August 25), and yes, on our beautiful outdoor stage overlooking the Berkshire hills. We thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm!

Jacob's Pillow is heaven on earth for dance-lovers. I went for the first time as a representative of Luna Negra Dance Theater, from Chicago, who performed there and fell in love. There are shows all summer long - Wed thru Sun. Two theaters, a stunning outdoor stage with free performances and the setting is serene and beautiful. I will definitely go back and hope to make an annual trip to the Pillow. Don't miss this gem while in the Berkshires!

This 60+ year festival deserves every accolade it gets. We hear a free lecture for an hour by Judith Jamison, saw a free outdoor dance performance on a stage overlooking the Berkshires, and attended one of the great theatrical/dance performances ever, "From the Horse's Mouth", a tribute to Ted Shawn and men dancers, featuring 25 great dancers, including Lar Lubovitch and Arthur Mitchell. A great evening and a great place.

We're flattered to be called "best"; thank you so much for your heartfelt review. So glad that you enjoyed Ms. Jamison's free PillowTalk and the "From the Horse's Mouth" performance. 2012 is actually our 80th Anniversary Season, and we're looking forward to many, many more years of bringing dance to the Berkshires. Thank you!

This is the second year we've been here. We both love dance and this place has some of the best! The grounds are lovely and just wandering around is a pleasure (and you can do that free). They also have the free Inside/out series which is a short outdoor dance program in a lovely amphitheater with the mountains as a backdrop. We saw two shows in that series over the 3 days we were at the pillow. Also saw Tero Saarinen company's "Borrowed Light" which was an amazing combination of dance, lighting and music (the Boston Camarata on stage with the dancers). This is hard to describe but well worth seeing. We were blown away. Also saw the Men Dancers: Tales from the horses mouth. We were expecting recreations of Ted Shawn dances but instead it was a compelling juxtaposition of short persona stories told by the dancers and them dancing. Only 4 people on stage at any point but as the newest one would come on to tell a story the one who had been on stage the longest (each did 3 variations) would go off. Another amazing and moving performance.
