“A fun sailing adventure with Captain Wade!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

We had a great time on the famous skipjack, 'Rebecca Ruark' and learned a great deal about the history of the Bay, oyster dredging and Tilghman Island. Captain Wade Murphy is a third generation islander who runs charters on his skipjack, the oldest boat in the US sanctioned by the coast guard. Wade and his son run the excursions, about 2 hours each on this beautiful ship. During that time, he tells numerous stories about his experiences with oysters and sailing ships. He is a wonderful character, a national treasure really - makes it a fun trip! Beautiful waters, beautiful ship, and lots of interesting information. There is also a sunset sail which would be lovely, but we sailed in April and it was a bit chilly for an evening sail. In the late spring through early fall it would be lovely!

“Thanks to Captain Wade.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012 via mobile

The Rebecca T. Roark is the initial reason for the tour, but Captain Wade is the real treasure. His friendly manner doesn't hide his passion nor his knowledge. He willingly shares his experiences, and opinions. This was a real fun tour, and educational as well. A terrific value.

“A sail plus an education”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

Captain Wade has got to be the most knowledgeable waterman on the bay. Not only does he know of it's history but he has the understanding of the changes its gone through over the years and the importance of conservation to continue to provide a livelyhood for future watermen. And know one has better stories to share. Even without a good stiff breeze, the trip was very enjoyable.

“Great Skipjack Ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

I highly recommend this ride on the skipjack Rebecca T. Ruark. A national historic landmark, she is the oldest skipjack in service, originally built in 1886, but completely redone after Capt. Wade bought her in 1984. Capt Wade Murphy, a third generation Tilghman Island waterman with over forty years on the water, gives you a two hour ride on the mouth of the Choptank river as he tells you a great story covering history, oystering, environmental policy illustrated by his library of photo albums.
The tour members raise, lower and reef sails, dredge oysters and steer the boat, while attempting to maintain course. The cost is only $30 per person, but tips are appreciated if you really liked the trip. We went during the week in the fall, and there were only six or eight passengers. The boat is over fifty feet long and a third that wide, so has ample room for lots of people. Only water is provided, but we were so busy we didn’t get to eat our picnic lunch until after returning. Additional information is found at www.skipjack.org and on wikipedia .
