Courtyard Silver Spring Downtown
Ranked #5 of 12 Hotels in Silver Spring
Reviewed July 25, 2007

The location is OK as Silver Spring is becoming revitalized, but still has a long, long way to go. The hotel is convenient to some mid-level chain restaurants, but nothing notable. I suggest staying in Bethesda - a far nicer area. The desk clerks were not nice and some could barely speak English. The were not overly concerned with any problem and acted like they were doing me a favor for just giving directions to find the subway. The rooms were not bad and were clean. It's not a bad place to stay and is convenient to public transportation if you are without a car.

Great location; on the periphery of a shopping district with restaurants, theaters and stores close by. Whole Foods Market across the street provided supplies for our in-room fridge.

Hotel was very clean, staff was very cordial. Lobby is on the 3rd floor so you enter through the parking garage or an elevator connecting to a small alcove with street access. (Elevator is very slow!)

I was warned not to stay here because I'd have to pay parking in addition to the room, but parking was $5.50 a day and I didn't have to pay on Saturday or Sunday.

Hotel was never busy in the lobby, restaurant, or bar but parking was tough on Saturday because of a concert going on in the mall area.

I was there for a week on business. The room was good, the housekeeping was great. The negitives I have were more customer service. The ice machine on the 2nd floor did not work and the drink machine was out the whole week. When the lady with me reported it the lady at the counter was very NOT concerned. She just said "Whatever". She was the same one that checked us in on Monday. She is just there to do a job and that is it. Not friendly at all. When we would leave at 8am the sprinklers were always on and they covered the walkways. You got wet each morning going to your car. I was really surprise that they did not have wireless internet.

I had to go to DC on business, but all the hotels in town were booked. This hotel was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad we stayed here. The location is close to the metro - about 2 1/2 blocks - very easy walking. There is also plenty to do around the hotel - a mall, shops, great restaurants, a Discovery Channel building and an American Film Institute. The area was really clean and safe. The hotel was secure and had a great workout area. The staff was very helpful and accomodating. Our rooms were well kept and there were plenty of extras provided by Marriott. I would recommend this hotel for someone who can't or doesn't want to stay right in DC.

I have lived in Silver Spring for the past 3 years and when this hotel came up I wanted to stay at it. However the prices were just too exhorbant! I finallly got the chance to stay here in May becuase a last min price drop of 139 a night allowed it. It was a nice hotel, however very basic. The manager of the hotel also acts as the server, busboy and greeter and the restauarant is right in the lobby! However the room was beautiful and the shower great! ITs only a few blocks from silver spring metro and is a great spot if you plan on staying in DC.

We stayed for about a week in early March. We had a King Suite (maybe called a "one-bedroom") along Fenton St. The construction noise is all gone now but the late night traffic noise is bothersome.

Bed was great and nice enough room amenities. Although an in-room safe would have been nice. Plenty of space in the room. The desk is a bit weird since half of it rolls out and can be moved around the room-- you'll have to see it to understand.

All the staff were friendly. Even met the General Manager who bent over backward to accommodate any request we had! The only advice I would ignore from them is transportation to the airport. This was our second stay here and for the second time, the taxi company they called for us (different one this time) screwed up our pick-up time. (I say, "let your fingers do the walkin' and find a company in the phone book!)

One odd bit of design... there is no real front entry to the hotel other than a small plaque reading Courtyard by Marriott. You are dropped off in front of what looks like an apartment entrance without a doorman. You must open two glass doors, enter a small room, wait for an elevator, go to the third floor, and then you'll find the lobby. There are no doormen, bellmen or any other hotel employees at the hotel entry!

No doubt you'll eat at the buffet breakfast because it's easy. But actually, it was pretty good... and I've been to many! And even more surprising was the fact that the evening room service is quite delicious. We tried the salmon, burger, pasta, salads, and a few other items. Everything tasted great-- I didn't expect that from a Courtyard.

But if you want to explore, there is a whole new dining/shopping district practically attached to the hotel. All the recent construction built at least 7 or 8 new restaurants around the corner. The Thai place was good (they have a bar but their drinks were poorly mixed) and so was Macaroni Grill for family friendly pasta/Italian. There's another Southwest style grill nearby that was pretty good too.

The subway's Red Line was about a ten minute walk past the Discovery Channel's new headquarters (very cool lobby with dinosaur bones and cool displays.) Maybe 15 minutes to DC's major train station and another 5 to the Mall. 25 minutes to the zoo.

All in all a pretty good location if you need to be in Silver Spring. And not too bad if you want to get into DC. I'd stay here again.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 weekend nights in early Sept 2006. The hotel couldn't be in a better location downtown Silver Spring.-- Within walking distance of the metro, several nice restaurants, shopping. Front desk staff was pleasant and helpful. Our room was clean and had been updated recently.
We were surprised; however, that parking in the adjacent garage is not complementary.
Overall a great stay, just somewhat expensive for our budgets.
