“A Very Tranquil Spot on Maryland's Eastern Shore”
Reviewed September 27, 2007

We had a lovely 2 day stay at the Inn at Perry Cabin midweek in September. We reserved the "Summer Escape" package which included breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner - and we had a studio room.

The Inn was not very crowded when we visited and quite a few of the businesses in St. Michaels weren't open. We enjoyed the infinity pool, and had it pretty much to ourselves. It was an outdoor pool which didn't seem to use chlorine - so you didn't get that smell in the air which was very pleasant. The only problem was some fairly aggressive horseflies which viewed us as tempting targets if we chose to use the floats.

There was a pool bar but it was only open one of the days we were there. There was also a pub in the inn - we never saw anyone in there though it looked very nice.

We enjoyed our meals in the restaurant - food and service were top notch (with one exception - see below). Everything we ate was wonderful - many of the dishes featured crab and were excellent. The restaurant wasn't crowded and we were able to enjoy breakfast and lunch outside on the patio which was very pleasant.

The one hiccup was at breakfast one day - there was a very inexperienced server who seemed very unfamiliar with breakfast (and she wasn't getting much help from anyone either). She mixed up orders, couldn't tell us what was included with our package, didn't check back to refill coffee, etc. Very unusual for this type of luxury property. We commented to the maitre d' that we were disappointed with the service we received. He acknowledged our complaint but we never heard back from anyone in management - unusual for this level of establishment.

However, other than that, we had a very restful stay. The room was large and comfortable, with a huge bathroom with stand alone tub and separate shower, as well as two sinks on opposite walls - very nice. There was a fireplace though we didn't use it since temperatures were warm.

They have a computer hooked up to the internet so you can check your email - no need to bring your own.

There is also a nice spa with a fitness center - we didn't use it but we checked it out and were impressed.

Overall, we would highly recommend this property for a restful getaway.

I would like to thank this writer for their wonderful and positive comments and very much appreciate their sharing their experiences with other Trip Advisor readers.

My apologies for the closure of the pool bar. Our pool regularly closes down after the Labor Day weekend, however this year with some unseasonably warm temperatures, we were able to extend the opening of the pool however, were only able to staff the pool bar on weekends. We do offer poolside service from Room Service and now have a telephone available for guests to place orders during such times as the pool bar is closed.

You are correct that our maitre d’ should have done more to acknowledge your comments regarding the service at breakfast, and your comments are a good reminder to all of us. I am pleased that this was the only hiccup during your visit and look forward to welcoming you back to The Inn.

We stayed here with friends from Harvard in July 2007 after giving a lecture at the Smithsonian in DC on the delights of Northern Ireland.

St Michael's is a delightful village with fabulous shops - perfect for some serious retail therapy - and the Inn is the ace in the pack.

It is located right on the waterfront and set in stunning gardens and grounds, around which we were given a conducted tour by the lovely head gardener on a Saturday morning. The location away from the main road means that it is very very peaceful and a perfect place to unwind after a busy schedule.

Our rooms were superior ocean view on the first floor of a separate building about 2 minutes walk from the main block of the hotel. They were very large and very comfortable, with a separate sitting room and superb bathrooms with all the toys and upscale toiletries. The furnishing are what we call "US Maritime" - light airy and bright and are very pleasant and appropriate.

We had lunch each day on the terrace, with huge umbrellas strategically placed to offer shade. The dishes were wholesome and more than adequate and the soft-shell crab can be highly recommended.

We had dinner in the restaurant on the first evening - it started as a bit of a disaster with a long wait for anything and disorganised staff. Then suddenly, everything moved up several gears and the evening was saved.

Overall, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and went out of their way to look after us. The room service breakfasts [on the balcony over looking the water] were as good as any anywhere in the world and the cheerful room-service staff are real gems.

Any downside - none to complain about - the patchy start to dinner could have been a worry and wireless interent access is currently only available in the main building, but it is free!

A new spa has recently opened but we could not try it as all sessions were fully booked during our stay.

One other tip - Restaurant 208 across the road is superb!

All in all, a lovely peaceful place to stay - not inexpensive for sure but it is part of the Venice Simplon Orient Express Collection

We stayed at the Inn at Perry cabin in September 2005, for 2 nights. We had a fantastic time. The room was lovely, with our own small patio and direct access to the garden and water. The grouds are lovely, with squirrels and birds. The food in the restaurant was brilliant. We have travelled extensively in the US and this is probably one of the best hotels we have every stayed in. We found the staff to be exceptionally helpful, friendly and keen to give information about the local area. Fresh fruit in the rooms, bathrobes and slippers, first class toiletries all added to the experience. Beautiful lounges and the restaurant is lovely, wtih tables spaced far apart for privacy. You must try to oyster stew!

This was our second stay at Perry Cabin. Our first stay was over Christmas a few years ago so it was good to see the property in full bloom. We booked on the spur of the moment (a week early) and were happy to get a room, if only for one night. The reception staff was great and the entire property was beautiful. We had a room in the older part of the building on the first floor with a wall of windows overlooking the harbour. The room was nicely furnished with a comfortable sitting area and a side door leading to a private fenced patio. We would have loved to stay a week if it had been possible. The BEST part about this luxurious hotel is that they accept pets. Our dog was treated every bit as well as we were and it was nice to have her with us. We saw other people with dogs around the hotel but all were on leashes and well behaved. We will be back.

We stayed in the master suite with view. It was a beautiful suite, with comfortable bed with pop up TV, huge bathroom/closet/dressing room with separate tub and shower, and a living room with another TV, sofa, desk, and refridgerator. I thought the service was just right. The staff was there when we needed them, but didn't hover. As someone else said, the automatic filling of the ice bucket every afternoon and the turndown service with cookie were very nice touches. The food in the restaurant was fabulous, as was the service. It's not the kind of place where you feel obligated to tip everyone every time you turn around. We came from Massachusetts, and visited because we were in Maryland for another reason. I wouldn't make a special trip by plane from out of state to visit St Michaels, I think there are better resort towns along the coast of the US in the summer. But if you are in the area, or live within driving distance, it's a great, romantic, spot for a few days.

The inn at perry cabin is at a great location and is beautiful. The rooms and the amenities were fantastic. The rooms had great views they were seconds from the water. The service was not up to par and some of the employees were very rude. Other than that the inn was great and it was a shame that the service put a down side on the trip.

We have visited St. Michaels by boat many, many times, but this was our first visit by car. We booked a two night package for about $400/night that included one 3-course dinner for two at the Inn's restaurant. We had a room in the older section, closest to the reception area which was handy. The room was medium sized with large windows and door opening onto a porch/deck looking towards the harbor and the back of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. That was nice for morning coffee and/or an evening glass of wine.

The bed was very comfortable. The room lacked a closet however. There was only an armoire for hanging clothes but with no shelves. There was no dresser and no drawers anywhere so we were forced to operate out of our suitcases on the floor. The TV was on a table. It should be on a dresser with some storage space. The only drawer, in the very tiny desk, was broken.

Except for the desk lamp, lighting in the room was quite dim as it was in the bathroom. There was no exhaust fan in the bathroom, so even a brief shower badly steamed up the only mirror above the old fashioned stand alone sink. There was only one small shelf above the sink, so toiletries/cosmetics rested either on the toilet or the floor. There was no full length mirror anywhere for those who would like to see if they look presentable before heading out for the evening.

The towels were huge, thick and often replaced. There was fresh ice in the ice bucket every afternoon. There were fresh cookies with each evening's turn down service....all very nice touches. For those with computers, the WiFi service was terrific in the room and throughout most of the facility I visited.

The grounds were very well kept. There were complementary bicycles for guests, though we did not use them. Downtown is only a few blocks away and the Maritime Museum (very worthwhile to visit) is even closer.

The staff was friendly to a fault, although at check-in a bellman never appeared after being called. We finally gave up, found the room ourselves, re-parked the car and brought our own bags in. That wasn't a big problem for us but a bellman would have been nice, if only to explain where things were located such as the pool, spa, exercise room, etc. There was no map of the facility anywhere so it was a little confusing at first.

The food and the service in the restaurant was excellent at both breakfast and dinner. (We ate one dinner and both breakfasts at the Inn, other meals in town). Restaurant prices were fairly expensive. Our dinner was included with the room, but two drinks and a very moderately priced bottle of wine from their wine list set us back another $230, including tip. Late afternoon thunderstorms prevented us from using the pool, but it looked very nice.

Overall the Inn at Perry Cabin is a very nice facility with excellent, friendly service. The main facility needs a little care. I don't know about the newer wing. For the price we felt our room needed some updating, the bed, towels and overall setting being very positive, the lack of a dresser, full length mirror, bathroom shelving and a bathroom exhaust fan being items one expects in almost any hotel room, anywhere.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, setting on Chesapeake Bay
  • Disliked — Lack of amenities in room -- dresser, mirror, lighting, bathroom exhaust fan, storage space

I would like to thank the writer for their comments and am pleased to note that they enjoyed so many of the services and amenities of The Inn.

I have noted the writer’s comments regarding the room and its furnishings. We have a constant program to renew and refresh the rooms in our historic section. In an effort to retain the character of The Inn, each room in this section is done individually with different fabrics, furnishing and bric a brac. Many times, due to the size and layout of the room, we are somewhat limited with furnishings, however, will take the writers into account when refreshing other rooms.

For those reading, I would like to let you know that the Studio Rooms and Master Suites in our Crescent wing were completed four years ago and all have oversize bathrooms and built in cabinets with plenty of drawer space and a shelf to hold the luggage.

Thank you for your comments. All of us here look forward to welcoming you back once again in the future.
