“Great location, dated accommodations, grade C for food”
Reviewed July 18, 2010

Title says it all. The location is great, the buildings and the rooms in them scream late 1970s (and that isn't necessarily a good thing) and instead of the high quality seafood/shell fish we associated with this Eastern Shore location, Harbourtowne served up the kind of fare you might get at a Holiday Inn near a PA Turnpike exit. Were it not for the views and the charming little nearby town of St. Michaels, I would rate this place a notch lower than I did.

Harbourtowne is an aging, mid-range hotel with great location, its own golf facilities and some luxury pretensions that it cannot deliver without tearing down the buildings and starting afresh. The buildings are the typical concrete motel style with outside stairs. Rooms have been remodeled and mine was large and decent enough. Bathroom floor was sheet vinyl (it has been a very long time since I have seen that in a hotel) and the small outside deck (great views) has the typical faux railings (a board cut with a bandsaw to create a little design interest) and greenish, pressute-treated floor typical of 30 years ago.

It isn't that any of these things are a hardship or totally unacceptable. It is that Harbourtowne is NOT the luxury golf resort they imply it is on their website. Compared to other golf resorts around the country, Harbourtowne isn't very competitive. Bottom line? It is a fine enough place to stay if you can snag a great room rate and your expectations are in line with that discounted price.

What a beautiful property...
What a horrendous front desk staff.
These folks wouldn't undersand hospitality it it hit them on the head.
It is truly a shame that such a beautiful property was so poorly run.
The front desk staff seemed utterly clueless, and many members of our large party were met with blank stares, looks of befuddlement, and flat out impoliteness.
An archane cancellation policy...phone calls with questions about the policy were never returned by the management.
The "clubhouse" dining facility claimed to have "fresh-prepared crab" on its menu, which clearly was code for "have to send staff all the way into town to jump into the bay, fish it out, and bring it back." A word to the wise...order your lunch the night before you intend to eat it.

The guest canceled their reservation after the cancellation date given. We informed the guests that we would do our best and try to resell the room, if not they would be held liable for that night. Unfortunately we were unable to sell the room. We offered to split the cost of the night they canceled out of good faith and the guests agreed and were happy when they left. This comes as a surprise to see this issue posted.

As far as the country club menu, our crab is freshly prepared everyday, it does take time to prepare each item on our menu to ensure each item is prepared properly and to ensure proper temperatures for safety issues.

We loved this hotel! Like some other reviewers, I am really surprised by the negative reviews that I've read. We stayed for a long weekend in June. We reserved a King Suite so the kids could have their own room. The Suite had two rooms separated by a door. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room had a huge deck overlooking the water and was well-appointed. The Suites have a refrigerator which was nice. The setting of this hotel is unbelievable with gorgeous views of the water. All around the grounds there are adirondack chairs set up so you can just sit and enjoy the views. The pool is nice. There was a very, very, very small beach area which was perfect for my two toddlers to play in. The restaurant was pretty good and had kids meals. My only negative comment is that service in the restaurant was very slow. We will definitely go back to Harbourtowne - I can't wait!

My mother and I have stayed at Harbourtowne for the last 3 years and neither of us play golf. The view is incredible and so is the opportunity to see cranes, bald eagles and the wonderful sail boats on the eastern bay. If possible stay in one of the cove rooms which are only about 15-20 feet from the water's edge. They also have a water taxi that runs to St. Michaels. Service has always been incredible. There are 2 restaurants onsite and you are only about 5-10 minutes away from downtown St. Michaels. Some point room also come with a real fireplace.

This is a 5-star location, 4-star golf course and 2.5 star lodging. Rooms were older vintage with small bathrooms but rather large living areas. Large balconies but lacked privacy partitons with adjacent rooms. Would recommend first floor units as you can move chair onto lawn area for more privacy. Some minor room inconveniences that were quickly taken care of by management. Really enjoyed the grounds and sitting by the bay. Priced appropriately for the somewhat dated rooms.

This is my second stay at Harbortown. I found the room spotlessly clean, nicely furnished with a great updated coffeemaker. We stayed in one of the rooms that sit alone ,away from the main building. The view was beautiful even though we had fog and rain. The staff were very helpful and courteous. It's a nice location for family ,older couples or a girls get away. The hotel no longer has spa services but recommended The Green Gables in St. Michael's.

Our only complaints about the room were that there was sand in our bed, and the heater didn't work. They also only gave us one log for our fireplace. The other bad thing is that the walls are VERY thin. We heard people having a conversation at 2:30AM that seemed like they were actually in our room. If you go to the Bayview Restaurant at the hotel, don't get the crabcakes. Overall, the restaurant was okay, but nothing spectacular. Go to "St. Michael's Crab and Steak" for a MUCH better meal! We also did a wine tasting at St. Michael's Winery, which was a lot of fun. We tried every single one of their 19 wines!
