“Great place after the renovation!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2008

This was a great value for an excellent upper scale room. The easy access to the red line Metro makes it perfect for a business or pleasure commute into D.C. I'd read the earlier reviews as a Doubletree and wasn't that impressed, but it really has been completely redone. The rooms were clean, very comfortably furnished, and quiet. I didn't eat there, so can't comment on that aspect. I would definitely return and recommend the facility to others.

This former Doubletree is being transformed into a hilton, and you are bearing the costs for it by staying here. There are absolutely no amenities. The "restaurant" is one of the meeting rooms set up with large round tables for 10 and a catered barely edible buffet. Same for the "business center", but between the hours of 6 AM and 10 PM, on two different days, I saw no sign of it being open. There is no gym. There is no reliable elevator (hotel was nearly empty when I stayed but had to walk through construction site using back stairwell due to waiting more than 15 minutes for elevator on every occasion). Locations of vending/ice machines are sporadic and illogical. The temperature control in the room is either "icebox" or "sahara". The rooms have been recently renovated, but still look old and dumpy (all the electrical sockets were coming out of the wall, the thermostat had no cover, etc). I can't possibly see a reason for one to stay here. This hotel should not be open yet, and even when renovations are complete, I'd have low expectation.

Only stay here if you get a great deal (we were charged only $109 plus taxes per night as part of a wedding party). The hallways and elevators stank of construction dust and (once) gas. We were promised a non-smoking room but it obviously wasn't -- no signs to indicate "no smoking" and distinct, persistent tobacco odor.

Still no exercise facility, just a pass to Gold's Gym.

Parking is free, but there was also construction dust in the garage. Surprisingly, there was no security in the garage; the door to the hotel was unlocked, with no need for room key or other ID for entry.

Bed, bathroom, toiletries were excellent, as was the food at a catered brunch in an uninspired meeting room.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused by the renovation. It was a big project and hard to minimize it’s impact. The good news is it’s over and we are very proud of the results. The Hilton Precor health club is open as is the Twinbrook Grille and Riff’s Bar and Lounge. We hope you have an opportunity to return and enjoy the Hilton Washington DC/Rockville.

1. Lots of construction forces one to walk twice as far to some rooms.
2. Paint fumes and dust clouds abound.
3. Internet access is not free.
4. Front desk clerks frequently contradict each other on hotel amenities.
5. No gym, but access to Gold's gym 1.09 miles away (shuttle not available quickly).

However, lots of great eateries within walking distance.

Thanks for sticking with us during the renovation. The project was big and not without its challenges. The good news is it’s over and the results are terrific. We still have plenty of great restaurants in the area and we are just across the street from the Metro. I hope you have the chance to return to Hilton Washington DC/Rockville and check us out.

i wouldn't think that Rockville is a "destination" sort of place, but I had reason to be there, so I was. We ended up at this particular hotel via the Priceline potluck, and had no reason to regret it. I'm sure that once the renovations are completed, you won't see the sub-$100 rates available today. For that sub-$100 rate (and ours was considerably less) you won't get a pool or a spa, but I don't have those in my home, either, and didn't miss them. What you do get is a large spanking brand new room , comfortable beds and courteous and friendly staff. Probably due to the ongoing work (which by the way, caused us no bother or inconvenience whatsoever) the occupancy is down, which means the hotel is quieter with excellent service. The location is what it is. There are plenty of inexpensive restaurants nearby and a several stores even a non-shopper might like (REI and Performance Bicycle are just across the street) as well as a Whole Foods grocery and Starbucks for breakfast and lunch. A golf-themed restarant (PG Tour, I think) was two minutes away and had a great menu as well as beer and wine (the latter two not available in the many "family" type restaurants nearby). In the star ratings I'm giving totally subjective five star ratings even though, it seems obvious, Rockville isn't a five star location compared, say, to St. John, USVI, nor is the view over a Rockville shopping center quite as nice as the view over the Atlantic from the Maine coast. Still, the setting being what it is the hotel is in a good location and the view over the city streets is as good as it can be, given the setting. Does that make sense?

  • Liked — Large new room. Super staff. Great value.
  • Disliked — Everything was fine, I would have preferred Paris or Rome to Rockville, though.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2007

Stayed 2 nights in March 2007 for business. Be aware this property is being transformed into a "Hilton". The 7th floor room I had appeared to have been recently renovated, and was much improved from the room I had stayed in at this hotel approximately one year prior. The furnishings are new and modern, towels and bed linens really fluffy, amentities good, room and bath very clean. They appear to be still in transition from a few leftover "Doubletree" room items to "Hilton" room items. The website does currently state that the lobby is being renovated, but I'm not sure that completely captures the reality of a major gutting of all of the interior spaces that is going on. Despite this, however, I was not disturbed by any noise or work in the room areas. There were some notices about some things not being available due to construction, so if you care about fitness center, etc. you may want to check directly with the hotel before you go to see if it is available. Internet connection is ~$10 per day. Staff was overall very pleasant. I would personally not stay without a rate discount during the construction time since there is limited availability of some services and ambience. Metro stop just behind hotel (walk past parking lot), few shops and restaurants across the street.

I'm at the tail end of a nine night stay at the Doubletree and here are some of my observations.

Yes, the hotel is VERY convenient to the metro. Walk out the rear of the hotel, cross the street and the metro lot and your at the metro's paystation. Mabye a one-minute walk.

The only food I ate at the hotel was the breakfast buffet, which was not great. Undercooked greasy bacon, watery scrambled eggs, some fruit, french toast, potatoes and cereal.

On the plus side, there are several restaurants (TGI Friday's type) within a half mile walk.

I had no complaints whatsoever with my room. It must have been recently remodeled.

Be prepared to pay about 45 $/week or 10 $/day for in-room internet. The business center also charges to use the internet, I belive their rate was about 7 $ for 30 minutes.

The exercise area was small, I think it had four or five machines. There is an older indoor hot tub, a sauna and two large pools (both indoor and outdoor).

I would not consider the staff overly friendly but more "professionally distant."

  • Liked — convenience to metro
  • Disliked — having to pay for the internet
