We went based on tripadvisor's ratings and were not disappointed. Everything we had was extremely good. This was the BEST Italian restaurant that I have ever eaten at and one of the best restaurants period.

Lucky us! Il Pizzico is less than three miles from our residence. We hadn’t visited for a while, so Friday night—on a whim—we stopped in. Knowing that the parking lot is always crowded, the first task was finding a space—and we did. Knowing that the restaurant typically is crowded, we anticipated a wait (and maybe a cocktail!). Luckily, a table for two was available—and ours immediately!

Our waiter first determined our choice of water—something we appreciate since our preference is sparking water (NO ice!). Next a selection of breads arrived, along with a portion of the house minced olive/olive oil spread—a sort of "tapenade" that is heavenly!

Menus in hand we considered our options: The list is not long, but because we have sampled many of the dishes over the past decade, choosing “just one” is difficult—everything is tempting. With some preliminary idea of starters and entrées, we considered wine. We are still exploring and learning Italian wines, and are becoming familiar with Chiantis.

Choices made: Antipasti--Carpaccio di Manzo and Prosciutto e Mozzarella di Bufala. Secondi--Scaloppine alla Sandra and a special of the day, Duck with Honey-Orange glaze. My husband also had a half order of simple spaghetti with olive oil, garlic, and a few hot pepper flakes—perfect! The wine was a Chianti Classico (Sangiovese grapes). Oh, yes—dessert: As our waiter recited the choices, we simultaneously stopped him as soon as he said “panna cotta.” Indescribable—essence of vanilla with a mixed berry garnish. The espresso was SO good—almost like chocolate—that we had two each! We loved everything—as expected.

During our meal we had time to observe other patrons, the wait staff, and—best of all—patron/server interaction. We enjoyed watching (and hearing bits of) that interplay. The staff are professional and many are Il Pizzico veterans—a huge plus, as far as we are concerned.

Don’t let the location (in a typical main-road “strip mall”) fool you. Yes, parking can be difficult at times, and a wait might be necessary. Tip—weeknights and “earlier” rather than “later” helps forestall parking/wait time issues. Without caveat, we highly recommend Il Pizzico to those looking for good food and ambiance in Montgomery County Maryland.

Food was up to their usual high standards. When salad had too much vinegary dressing it was replaced. Parking can be a problem out back among body shops if front is full. Service was poor: took plates from some while others eating, ordered glass of wine never came, charged for extra dessert $8.25, served hot coffee with no spoon. Charming manager/owner apologized, adjusted bill, comped beverages, served small dessert wines gratis. But #1 in Rockville is slipping a bit.

After hiking and eating through Tuscany two months ago, we were doubtful that an American Italian restaurant in a small strip mall on Rt355 could compare well. But, to our absolute delight, the food, the presentation and atmosphere were as good as or better than what we encountered throughout Tuscany. Starting with their traditionally wonderful watercress salad, which makes the meal worthwhile itself, we went to ravioli with mushrooms and pine nuts in a pistachio cream sauce and to shrimp and scallops with pancetta and shredded fennel. We ended with a creme brulée so good that we had to scrape every last morsel out of the shallow dish. As there were other people there, we resisted licking the dish! As we were leaving we spoke to the maître d' who himself is from Florence and we had a most enjoyable parting conversation. We will be back soon!

In the middle of a low-rent, questionable-looking mini-strip shopping center and less than 50 yards from a gas station and light industrial park, I had tempered expectations of this quaint, nicely-decorated restaurant. Il Pizzico serves no pizza - the name is Italian for "the pinch."

To me the menu reads, and the food tastes, more French than Italian. The dishes are mostly Italian, but the descriptions are not pure Italian recipes. The sauces are thick and complex like some of the best meals we had in Paris (e.g., Mariette), not at all like some of the wonderful ristorantes we experienced in Rome, Venice, etc. (e.g., Al No No).

The shrimp bisque was fantastic - not a spice I could put my finger on in spoonful after spoonful, but it was a symphony of flavors and I could have had a second bowl.

The veal special with ratatouille and braised potatoes in bechemel reduction was almost mystical. Our other secondi, scallops and shrimp with fennel and a sauce I had never heard of, couldn't pronounce and have no idea what was in it, was the best dish of the night.

Service was also excellent, and European in style. The maitre d' snapped the napkins before placing them on our laps.

It was not inexpensive, about $100 for two, with one glass of wine, one dessert and one cappuccino that tasted like I was drinking in Europe. But well worth it!
