In town for a seminar and am always looking out for local places with "cheap eats" accolades - this is the place! The wall is covered with "Best on a Budget" type awards.

The price is cheap but the food is not - the pot-stickers are fresh, hot, fantastic and a huge portion for a dim sum/appetizer.

So good I went back again the next night!

A and J is a bit of a culinary adventure -- so don't be going looking for sweet and sour pork or other traditional Chinese/American fare. The menu is authentic Chinese, served in smaller portions -- kind of like tapas. We thought it was interesting and tasty and will definitely return for another meal at some point.

Note: the decor is not great and they don't serve alcohol. You are really going to try something entirely new. The prices were very reasonable.

Tried this restaurant for breakfast on Saturday. Got there at 10 am when it opened, and it filled up fast. My dining companion and I had not been there before, and, while we both are rather old hands at standard (Southern?) dim sum, we were quite lost here. The little paper dim sum menu was not very descriptive and seemed to be very carb heavy with little flavor and a bit of crispiness. It was very reasonably priced, however. We checked the larger menu and chose some fried dumplings - which were quite good, and their house special noodles. I think the place is worth further exploration, but it was kind of disappointing as the menu was not descriptive enough and the servers, although very friendly, were quite busy and we didn't attempt to ask for help. Other people had found more varied choices, Will try harder if there is a next time.

Delicious menu of dumplings, dim sum, soups, and simple dishes. Very popular with both Chinese and non-Asian diners. Be prepared to wait during busy times. Friendly service. Cash only.

A & J's has restaurants in Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, California and lucky for us two in the DC area.

I think of this as the Chinese answer to small plates or tapas minus the high price.

Our favorites include: niu ro niu jin mian, niu ro xian bing, lu ro fan, fen zheng pai gu, xuan ji, pi dan dou fu, ma la huang gua, lu dan, hong shao niu ro mian and pan fried pork dumplings.
