“Beautiful and Comfortable in St. Mary's County”

We were looking for a quiet B & B for Valentine's Day and stumbled upon the best kept secret on the East Coast. Woodlawn Farm combines the grace and charm of yesterday with all of today's conveniences and comforts. Nestled on the southern end of St. Mary's County, Woodlawn allows for an easy commute throughout the area. Point Lookout State Park for fishing and swimming, Leonardtown, Lexington Park and Solomons Island for shopping and restaurants, or St Mary's City and Sotterly Plantation for history and culture, together allow for a little something for everyone. The breakfst was hot, delicious, and the best way to end our perfect accomodations. Whether its fresh fruit and quiche you like, or you mention your southern roots to your gracious host, Jim, you may find some scrapple or country ham to compliment your morning coffee. Either way, Woodlawn Farm is, by far, the sweetest destination.

From the terrifically beautiful setting and friendly staff to the hearty breakfasts and handsomely furnished rooms, Woodlawn Farm does things right.

We happened upon Woodlawn Farm in February 2008, a stark and cold month that didn't detract from the beauty of the grounds one bit. With well groomed fields, a large and interesting Boxwood in front of the main house, and a peaceful cove that leads to the Potomac River, we found Woodlawn to be a visual delight and a welcome bit of solitude during the long Winter.

You should know that the purpose of our initial visit was to scout locations for our upcoming wedding, to be held in September of 2008. After first visiting Woodlawn Farm in February, we quickly realized that if it was so beautiful during Winter, then it will be incredibly beautiful in September. Needless to say, our expectations were either met or exceeded, and that includes a wedding ceremony that took place during Tropical Storm Hanna.

Conveniently for us, Woodlawn has the capability to handle both of our nuclear families (sleeping up to 23 people on site), making it an ideal site for family gatherings, group retreats, or romantic getaways for two. The main house has a large main room, which looks out onto the cove through room length sliding glass doors. The main house also has two larger bedrooms, a few sitting rooms, and more formal dining room which all proved a benefit during our wedding weekend.

The other buildings are primarily comprised of bedrooms, which are very convenient to the other guest quarters and main house.

There are even a few kayaks that guests can paddle within the cove or take out to the Potomac, where you can see Bald Eagles soaring while you paddle or relax on one of the secluded sandy shores along the river.

In short, we heartily recommend Woodlawn Farm to one and all. For a place that's only about 90 minutes from DC, it's far further in one's mind than the actual distance.

One of our editors booked us into the Woodlawn B & B and he may now be our favorite editor!
Tranquility and charm awaited at the end of a long country lane in the southern Maryland countryside. With vistas of the Potomac River, impeccable rooms in a circa 1798 manor house and the warm welcome of our host, how good could it all get?

We're frequent travelers and, as often as possible, stay in B & B's or boutique hotels rather than chain lodgings. Our experiences are generally very good, but Woodlawn ranks at the top of our list of favorites.

The setting was stunning, the rooms scrupulously clean and tastefully furnished in an eclectic mix of styles. Alll the amenities, including wireless internet and Direct TV, were available.

Our host knew the area and graciously made reservations at one of our favorite seafood restaurants, Courtney's, owned and stocked by waterman Tommy Courtney. Our work schedules are unpredictable, but our host flexed with our timing and saw to our every need without it seeming to be a burden.

Would we stay at Woodlawn again? Any chance we have!!!

After many e-mails to the inn, with prompt responses every time, I booked our stay for the Thanksgiving holiday. My husband and I were driving from North Carolina and meeting our son (and his girlfriend) who were driving from New York City. The inn was charming, on 180 beautiful acres, and the breakfast(s) were delicious. Jim Grube, the owner, was an absolute delight. He made reservations for dinner, suggested day trips, and made our visit worry/work free! He is delightful. The setting of the inn is gorgeous! For a restful escape, I highly recommend a visit to Woodlawn!

My husband and I were looking for a place where we could spend a night away before our baby is born. By checking out the Woodlawn website, it seemed to have all the ingredients of a romantic, peaceful setting. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more pictures of their rooms and suites provided on the website, but the photos of Woodlawn's beautiful grounds and the positive reviews on tripadvisor drew us in, and we decided to book a room.

As many before have mentioned, Jim was a wonderful host. He gave me his cell phone number and even called to answer a few of my questions one day as he was on his way to the airport. We were debated which room/suite to book since we couldn't tell much from the pictures and Jim helped suggest a suite he thought would suit us well (he was right!). When he heard that this would be a special getaway for my husband and me, and knowing that no one had booked our room for the evening before or after our stay, he encouraged us to check-in as early as we wanted and to check-out as late as we wanted so we could make the most of our visit.

Being from the DC area, we enjoyed our drive out to the secluded town of Ridge, Md. The long driveway leading to the main house built our anticipation for the beautiful views that we were soon to behold. Jim greeted us as we drove up and took us to the Poppy Suite, that he had recommended we stay in. I am quite pregnant so the spacious suite worked well for us. My husband and I watched movies in the living room area, ate snacks and played games at the dining room table, and mostly just enjoyed kicking back and enjoying the beautiful views of the river that we could take in from the large sliding glass doors in our suite.

A little more info...

THE ROOMS: For those of you who like details of the rooms (like me), here are a few tips/descriptions:

Boxwood & Calvert Suites- located in the main house with a quaint, historic feel. The rooms are spacious and gorgeously decorated, with amazing bathrooms. Calvert has a great view of the river and Boxwood has a view of the grounds on the front of the house. Both are beautifully appointed, and the sitting rooms and luxurious bathrooms will make you feel like you have your own little apartment. Calvert is one of the most coveted rooms, so you may want to make your reservation early.

Magnolia Cottage- my husband and I had originally intended to book this cottage (before Jim recommended the Poppy Suite to me), but were surprised to find just how tiny it was when he gave us the tour. It's definitely cute and quaint, but the cottage consists of a small bathroom and bedroom and is set in the middle of the garden area. It's adorable and definitely feels like a mini-cottage, but the suites provide a lot more space.

The other suites/cottages- there are 2 other cottages on the property that are set apart from the main/historic house. Each cottage contains 2 adjoining suites that can be separated by a door or opened up if you'd like to stay with your family or friends. Unlike the main house and the magnolia cottage that has more of a historic decor, the decor of these cottages feel more like a simple, well-appointed beach house with cheery pastels and comfy furniture. The bedrooms and bathrooms aren't huge; but, each suite has a nice sitting room where you can read a book or watch tv, and spectacular views of the river. The poppy suite & sunflower suites are connected, and next door is the cottage containing the river and pineapple suites. The poppy suite is the largest of the 4 and contains a large kitchen, dining room table, sleeper couch and entertainment center. In my opinion, the poppy suite boasts the best views since the angle of this suite allows you to see 2 different sides of the river and has a large double sliding glass door in the sitting room with a magnificent view. I peaked in the other 3 suites as well, and they all had attractive bedrooms with cozy sitting rooms that we would've enjoyed just as well. If you are traveling as a family or a group of friends, I would definitely recommend staying in these cottages/suites as the atmosphere may be a little more laid-back that the more quaint, romantic feel of the main house and magnolia cottage.

All in all, we loved our stay here and would definitely recommend it to anyone. The views of the river and the great hospitality we received from Jim is enough to make anyone want to come back. We were looking for a relaxing getaway, and that is what we got!

  • Liked — the amazing views, Jim's hospitality, the value - a lot of room and relaxation for the money!
  • Disliked — bathroom was small

We arrived later than expected, so while the house was invitingly well-lit, the setting was lost in darkness. At dawn in the Calvert Suite, we awoke to a view of the Potomac River that convinced us that we'd be coming back again! The house is an 18th century treasure that was lovingly restored by previous owners and tastefully decorated by Jim Grube, current innkeeper. Jim is a gracious host and talented breakfast chef. He provided great dining tips too! We enjoyed complimentary wine on the dock and watched the fall colors and sunset. Had we been more ambitious, we could have paddled around the tranquil cove in one of the many canoes available to guests. Woodlawn is close to Historic St. Mary's City, Maryland's version of Williamsburg; it is a must see. When you visit, ask Jim about his latest venture, winemaking!

We "won" an overnight stay at Woodlawn in a silent auction. We didn't know much about Woodlawn before visiting, and we were just stunned to find this beautiful property here in Southern Maryland. It is a little slice of paradise in our own backyard. The the friendly staff, the rooms and the food helped to make this a place that we will recommend to others and that we will visit again.

The property owner, Jim Grube, is very accommodating. We had to juggle a few dates to figure out what might work best for our visit (kids, soccer games, etc.) and Jim was patient and helpful through all of our emails. When we finally arrived, we were pleased to find that Jim was as warm in person as he was in his correspondence.

We were very happy to see that our accommodations were much bigger than any previous b&b that we've visited, and more private too. We had a sitting area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and deck. Our view of the river was beautiful.

The grounds are ample. You could spend a day walking the property, exploring the river and (weather permitting) taking a trip in the kayaks. Be careful when driving down the long lane to the house; deer passed us both at night and during the day.

Breakfast was plentiful. We had breakfast quiche, locally-made sausage, asparagus and roasted tomatoes. There was also orange juice and coffee and a delicious fresh berry pie. Local papers were available, and for the internet-dependent - there's even a wi-fi connection available.

We rate our trip to Woodlawn as a solid 5 out of 5. We can't wait until the winery opens so that we can visit that as well.
