Through to Salter's Tavern featuring historic red brick walls and old slate floors, with magnificent fires in the cooler months and offering casual outside dining on our Terraces and Veranda during balmy warm summers. This is a truly historic Inn, cosy with a natural patina running through. Friendly, great cuisine and understated professional service.

Mark Salter is a terrific chef who offers a superb menu. I knew him from the Inn at Perry Cabin in St Michaels and he and his partner Ian Fleming (Scottish) have done a tremendous job in their concept. They are always on hand to check your dining experience and I would recommend it to everyone. The Christmas Day lunch was a delightful experience.

My husband and I ate dinner and two breakfasts here while staying at the Inn. When we entered for dinner, the restaurant was nearly empty, but we were asked if we had a reservation (we did not). Several parties came in while we were eating, but the tables were never all full. Dinner was very good (I had the crab cake), but I thought the vegetable portions were very small (~3 small asparagus spears, and 3 tiny red potatoes cut in half). I WILL say the grilled asparagus were out of this world! Sure wish the serving had been more generous. My husband's iced tea looked like water with a drop of yellow food coloring. It was the weakest tea we had ever seen! We asked the waiter to bring stronger tea, which he did, but it wasn't much better. He gave some excuse about using family-sized tea bags for brewing and that's why it was so weak. Nice try, but we all know that leaving the tea bag in longer will make a better glass of tea, so the iced tea was a big disappointment, and not worth the money. Breakfasts were very good...excellent coffee (much stronger than the iced tea), delicious fresh fruit, French toast, and omelettes. A request about whether the restaurant had Egg Beaters (which they did not), was accommodated with the offer of making an egg-white omelette, which was quite good. Service was good on all occasions. Those staying at the Inn are given an allotment of $18 per person for breakfast, which can be used toward items off of the breakfast menu. Our breakfasts were quite hearty, and both days we stayed under the allotment. Definitely worth a visit, both for the good food and the ambiance of an old tavern.

Sat outside to have cocktails before our dinner reservation. Got served our first round and NEVER saw our server again!! My husband went inside to pay for our drinks and complain. What did the bright hostess/server do?? Gave us our bill and NEVER apologized or tried to fix the problem. What a shame! The Chef is awesome! Unfortunately he has to deal with people that have been hired there and that really don't care.

Unsure about the language and tone of your review but we want to be respectful. We do thank you for visiting our Inn and for sharing your views with fellow travellers. One of us (owners) is of course the Chef and we both select and work with the entire team. We stand behind them when the need support and we mentor and work with them when they need development. We would ask readers to read all reviews, from all sources and then decide if we are worth visiting. We are both very good listeners and our team really are keen to please, so do ask for either of us by name if you are not happy, at any point.

We happened to be in Oxford in early April on a sunny day which apparently was the first nice day for a while. We sat at the patio and had hamburgers. The food was tasty and the service excellent.
