Holiday Inn Express Ocean City
Ranked #34 of 104 Hotels in Ocean City
Reviewed November 7, 2006

I stayed at this Holiday Inn Express for one night on Sunday over Labor Day weekend before checking into the new Hliton Suites the next day.

The location of this hotel is quite pleasant. Right behind it is a very nice park on the bay with nice walkways going around bay inlets with a bridge, softball fields and also a fishing pier that goes out quite a way into the bay. I overheard a local resident walking there with some friends who were visiting with her saying to them it was one of her favorite places in Ocean City. I can certainly see why. Locals are not wrong about these kinds of things. In the surrounding areas of the park are residential areas of very nice homes and condiminiums.

When I checked into the hotel I was waited on by a very nice young woman from Belarus named Anna. I asked her if my room was facing the park and she said it was not. I asked her if it was possible to change it to the park bay view I had requested with my online reservation. It took her a couple minutes of double checking but she arranged for me to have a room on the top floor with a view facing the back. Anna was very nice about helping me and I appreciated her extra effort. It is great to have that view instead of the one in front facing the parking lot and Coastal Highway.

The room was pleasantly adequate, nothing special but clean and comfortable with easily enough room for two or three people. The two queen beds were not great but they were slightly better than those at the Crystal Beach Hotel where I stayed the previous weekend. The small refrigerator and microwave were convenient to have. There is no balcony and you cannot open the window, but the view is very nice of the park and bay.

The bathroom was okay to good, clean and modern, with plenty of towels but the Hotel has an interesting message for their guests posted there. If you want to take one of the towels or the room iron, there is a price list of the items which will be added to your bill. That is why whern you book this Hotel online it says "total estimated charges " after the room rate plus tax. If you want to take things out of the room with you when you leave you are definately going to pay for them when the maid does an inventory of the items after you check out.

The complimentary breakfast is not great but certainly adequate enough featuring hot cinnamon rolls as well as a variety of standard cold fare such as cereals, hard boiled eggs and breads, pastries and bagels. The staff working at the breakfast room in the morning is very pleasant to guests and their families. One of the ladies made a special effort to talk to each child who was having breakfast to ask them about their family and how they liked their vacation in Ocean City. I thought it was great to see such pleasant people working for the Hotel greeting families in the morning and taking interest in the children to make them feel welcome and special.

This excellent staff attitude was evident everywhere in the hotel. When I asked about restaurants in the area at the front desk I was given excellent advise. There is a Seafood Buffet restaurant one half block to the north on the same side of Coastal Highway as the hotel which was excellent. In addition, when I asked a couple of general Ocean City type visitor questions I was given good helpful answers by the front desk. These people put the arrogant concierge at the Hilton Suites I was about to experience the following day to shame. What can you say when staff at the front desk of a Holiday Inn Express do more to help you and offer suggestions than the concierge of a Hilton and all of it in a professional and friendly courteous manner?

A few words about beach access from this Hotel. You can walk across the Coastal Highway and go one to two blocks to the ocean. Or, you can easily drive your car from the hotel and park in the free parking along 125th street very close to and almost directly next to the beach and the ocean less than a half block away. There were plenty of spaces as it is not crowded for public parking near the beach like it is down by the Boardwalk.

As for parking at the Hotel, the front lot semi shares space with a restaurant next door so you may need to park in the lot next to the hotel on the left that shares parking with another restaraunt located next to the back. There is also a third parking area behind the Hotel for guests to park.

Overall, I found this hotel pleasant to stay at and while not situated on the Ocean or Ocean block, it was close with the nice adjacent park bay setting adding to the stay there. The online rate for Labor Day Sunday was $149 plus tax.

After reading the reviews here we booked the Holiday Inn Express on fairly short notice through this website and then through the Holiday Inn Express Online Reservations site. We booked a Standard Room and requested non-Smoking. Upon arrival we were told we were booked into a King Suite (one King and one pull out sofa) and it was a smoking room that they had placed an ionizer into. We asked to see the room - it wasn't very large and still smelled of smoke. We went back to the desk and complained, and they "found" a non-smoking King Suite like the one we saw, on the third floor. The pullout couch was too small to reasonably sleep two people unless they're really small kids, so we asked for a roll-away. They gave us one at no charge, and said they normally charge $15 per night for it. It isn't that good, but our 10-year old could sleep on it alright.

The rooms aren't that big and the "kitchenette" is really just a very small sink with a smaller refrigerator underneath, and one double-cabinet about 15" high above the sink, with a microwave mounted underneath. Comes with a coffee maker but not a toaster.

The lack of a balcony or window that opens makes the room claustrophobic. Cleanliness is pretty good overall, with the usual slight dust visibility around the perimeter of the room. There was plenty of dust behind the TV. The king bed is comfortable, but not the pullout sofa or rollaway bed. The bathroom is average sized for a cheaper hotel. When the staff gave us this room, they reminded us that it was an "upgrade" to have jets in the tub, but the jets have a lot of black sludge/mold in them and I wouldn't get in the tub and use the jets.

The outdoor pool is larger than most, about 5 feet deep at its deepest, and seems fairly clean, we saw someone cleaning it most days. The indoor pool seemed murkier, and is smaller and only 3-1/2 feet deep. There's a hot tub with the indoor pool, and the heat was up but the jets were broken for our entire stay. The chaise lounges and tables use the standard plastic, but they were fine, didn't see any broken.

There's plenty of parking on the side and back of the hotel, but the front is completely crowded with the Blue Ox restaurant in front and the "Olive Tree" restaurant on the left side of the hotel - there's no sense that the hotel has any of its own "grounds" to speak of. There is the Northside Park across from the back of the hotel, a pretty nice park overall.

The breakfast is pretty basic - 4 cereals, bagels, tasteless english muffins, other mini muffins, the cinnamon rolls which were good but kind of heavy, one or two fruits - oranges, apples, bananas that were generally way too green, and coffee/tea and orange and apple juice. The women who work the breakfast really hustle and keep everything full, but it's all gone by the published 10:30 a.m. end time.

The walk to the beach is pretty easy across coastal highway, there's beach access directly across from the hotel at 127th street.

Overall, I wouldn't stay here with 4 people unless you are assured of two queen beds and the parties sharing the beds can get along in them - a problem for our two boys. If you enjoy a balcony, forget it.

We decided at the last minute to go to Ocean City for the first time, for the 4th of July. With a 7 year old. From everything I heard, it would be a way to get a slice of classic Americana beach/boardwalk experience. I chose this hotel because it had the best prices at the time I was looking, and practically everything else was totally booked. I was a bit wary because of the distance from the boardwalk and the fact that it is an Express, but I was pleasantly surprised. It can't be beat for the 4th of July if you have small kids and want a hassle-free 4th of July experience.

The hotel is across the street from the beach. Up past the 100s, the beach is very nice and not crowded, so we didn't mind not being near the boardwalk a day or two since we were planning on visiting that area specifically anyway. Past the 100s seems to be a swankier part of town anyway.

The hotel lobby and common areas are clean and inviting. The staff is nice. We didn't use the indoor pool because we used the outdoor one. It was in very good condition for a pool at a hotel near the beach, with very refreshing, cool, and clean water. It is bigger than many of the hotel pools and kind of kidney shaped rather than oblong. There were nice tables with umbrellas and lounge chairs around it.

The only detraction was the maid service. The first day, our person never came to clean the room even though an envelope in our room identified her by name, and we left her what we thought was a good tip/incentive (also untouched). We had to report this and then they got someone in to clean the room within 5 minutes. We later noticed that this backup person didn't take away our old towels, though she did leave new ones. She forgot to leave us new shampoo and conditioner. The next day, our beds were made but the bathrooms were never really cleaned, they just left new towels and other stuff. I don't know if this was the hotel policy because it's a beach hotel where they get overwhelmed with constantly cleaning up sand and so have decided to just leave towels and tidy but not do the floors. It was a little annoying, but I felt like if that was the case, I kind of understood, because we were continually trooping sand in, and at least they were leaving new towels, cups, ice bags, etc., each time.

The room was otherwise pleasant, with a little sitting area with a loveseat, coffee table, fridge, and microwave. I agree that the free breakfast never varied, which was a bit tiresome, but that could be easily remedied if they offered yogurt cups and cut fruit to break up the bready theme. On the other hand, if one took the time, one could vary it each day. I think most people are on their way out and rush and grab the mini muffins and cinnamon rolls. One could sit and have a bagel and cream cheese and a boiled egg one day or a bowl of cereal and create some variety. And hey, it's complimentary. In a town where eating can cost quite a bit, it's nice to get something in your stomach in the morning without shelling out more money. Also, the Fractured Prune is a short walk over to the strip mall next door if you want to pig out on the famous donuts.

One of the best things about this hotel is where it is located. It is at 126th and Coastal, on the bay side. It is right next to a park where they have a wonderful 4th of July celebration each year. You can literally just walk across the parking lot to it. In a big field they put up huge moonbounces and other inflated obstacle courses, rock climbing wall, etc. They sell tickets that amount to about 50 cents per ride. Kids 8 or 9 and under will love this area. Then there's another adjacent field where they set up old timey arts and crafts stations with things you can buy, even llitlle folksy things like $1 grab bags for kids, and there were bands playing "beach music", plus lots of that good/bad food -- cheesesteaks, buffalo wings, funnel cakes, pizza, oyster fritter sandwiches, lemonade, hotdogs, ribs, chicken, ice cream, snowcones, etc. They set up lots of picnic tables with red and white checkered tablecloths. It's heavenly if you like your classic fourth of July celebration. At night, a spectacular fireworks display, the longest I've ever seen (and I've seen many) right there in the middle of a pretty uncrowded field. The finale to the fireworks was the most elaborate I've ever seen, almost as if they had something to prove or wanted to make sure absolutely no one left disappointed. I laughed and laughed and laughed as it went on and on and on. I told my friend that I'd just witnessed fireworks on viagra.

Anyway, nowhere else in OC can you do everything you ever wanted to do in OC for the 4th of July and then be in your room having pillow fights with your kids within 5 minutes of the fireworks ending instead of trying to walk to your car and sweating out the humidity.

There are also several good restaurants within walking distance. There is Tequila Mockingbird, which has excellent Mexican. There is Babe's blue ox steak house and raw bar. There is a dough roller and dumsers dairy (the only dumsers that sells oyster sandwiches). There is the Olive Tree, which was a little dingy and seemed an almost complete clone of Olive Garden as far as features (the sign out front and unlimited salad and breadsticks), but seemed to have much better food (a seafood marinara was excellent, with al dente pasta and seafood that was very fresh and not overcooked -- including the scallops)/the kid's pizza was an actual, nice, inspired pizza with spices and an excellent crust, not just thrown together as at so many restaurants.

All in all, we'd probably stay here for any 4th of July at OC. For a different occasion, we might try to get a suite at the Hilton.

Overall, the hotel was OK. We travelled with our 2-year-old and got a "suite" (which was really just a room). There was a little bit of an off odor when we got off the elevator that persisted throughout the week. But it's a Holdiay In Express, so we weren't expecting 5-star accomodations. The room was clean , and we liked the fact that we had a fridge.

The staff was very friendly and accomodating. They all learned our son's name and said Hi to him all the time. They had no problems with us moving our check-out time back an hour to enjoy an extra morning on the beach. The breakfast buffet was convenient, but not great, and it did not change from day to day (bagels, english muffins, cinnimon rolls, hard-boiled eggs, bananas, cold cereal, oatmeal, mini-muffins, and assorted breakfast drinks). It was OK for our purposes most mornings though.

It's pretty far up the beach from the main strip - you won't be walking down to the boardwalk, but the section of beach was pretty nice and less crowded than some others, since there's no big hotel there.

Our issue was that the hotel is actually pretty far away from the beach, especially when you have a 2-year old. The road you have to cross is six lanes wide, and the hotel is set pretty far back beyond that. Not too bad for adults or older kids, but toughfor a toddler. If we had it to do over again, we'd get a hotel on the other side of the main strip.

My wife and I stayed here on a 3-day business trip. (The conference hotel was too expensive so we found the HI XP at a AAA rate very affordable.) The property is on the north end of Ocean City (about 2 miles from the Maryland/Delaware state line), away from the busy downtown and boardwalk areas.

While we normally stay at oceanfront properties, this bayside property was nice. Upper floors facing west have the view of Assawoman Bay and 126th Street Northside Park. The park has walking trails along the bay, sports fields (baseball, soccer, lacrosse) and playground equipment for the kids. Shorebirds and a long public pier into the bay(available for fishing and crabbing) made for an enjoyable stay. The Atlantic Ocean, with public access to the sandy beach, is 1 block toward the east.

The room with 2 queen beds and cable TV was clean and comfortable. It contained a microwave and small refrigerator. A continental breakfast (muffins, cinnamon rolls, cereal, juice, etc.) was included. The pool area was clean.

I would recommend the HI XP for a nice relaxing stay when going "down the ocean, hon".

The room was clean and had a microwave, coffeemaker, and small refridgerator which was great. I wish more rooms had fridges for travelers!

The Negatives:
1. I was disappointed in the bed pillows which were lumpy and small.
2. The wireless internet was up one minute, down the next for our entire stay at this hotel, which was frustrating.
3.The cleaning staff used the customer elevators to move their carts from floor to floor. We waited with our arms loaded upon check-in for the staff to get their cart out of the elevator and down the narrow hall. Upon check out, we had to do the same thing. They desperately need service elevators.
4. The ice machine on our floor was not working.
5. Limited LIGHTED parking. The front of the building has few spaces. There is plenty of room on the back side of the hotel, but it is not lighted.

The Positives:
1. Continental breakfast. Try the banana mini-muffins and cinnamon rolls. Good stuff!!
2. Friendly front desk staff
3. Fridge and microwave
4. Could NOT hear neighbors TV or alarm clock...yea!
5. Clean and orderly
6. Restaurants within walking distance
7. Within walking distance of the beach (but far from the boardwalk)

I just stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Ocean City for business. This is a great hotel. I stayed in a king suite and it was very spacious, well furnished and spotless. Everything is very modern and up to date, unlike most of the hotel properties in Ocean City. I have stayed at about 8 different O.C. hotels and I think this hotel offers the best overall stay by far. The free breakfast offers some good choices to fill you up, especially the cinnamon rolls! The staff here was also very nice. The location is great. You are right across the street from the beach at 126th street and there are a number of good restaurants and shops within walking distance. The Blue Ox restaurant, right in front of the hotel, has incredible food and a cool bar attached to it with live entertainment. I tried the seafood pasta and a soft shell crab appetizer, it was heavenly! I highly recommend staying at Holiday Inn Express while in O.C.
