“The Commander-Maybe Not”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

I was disappointed in my recent visit to the Commander. The location is excellent, and the staff was professional and helpful, especially in the restaurant. Based on the cost of the room, I expected more. There was not enough light in the room (no overhead lighting). The AC in the living area did not cool the sleeping area. The WIFI service was spotty - I could not connect to the Internet at all one day. There was rust on the refrigerator door and shower rod. The travel books were very dusty. There are not enough electrical outlets in the room. Both TVs were small. One decent size TV would have been nice.

This was our third stay at the Commander and the least enjoyable as far as the room. We had an ocean view which was wonderful but the balcony chairs and tables were too dirty to use. Parts of the room were dirty as the ceiling I woke up looking at was downright gross. The tops of the fridge and cabinets in the kitchen area looked like they hadn’t been wiped down in months. My tall husband commented that perhaps the cleaning staff is short and doesn’t notice the crud. (He was actually being kind to try to excuse the dirt.) One day when we returned to the room we were left four bath towels and no wash cloths or hand towels either. The telephone beside the bed was a joke. It was antiquated and not even plugged in to use. I must say, though, the front desk staff & other types of staff were very friendly and accommodating when we interacted with them. We asked for extra towels each of our three days stay and received them promptly. Another odd thing is there was no where to put a bar of soap in the tub where it wouldn’t slip off onto the floor. We ended up folding a wet washcloth on the side to put our soap on to keep it in the tub and off the floor. Who makes a tub without a spot to place soap? Typical of OC is the parking isn’t that great as we had to park in the over-flow parking lot a few blocks away. We later found a spot at the hotel and didn’t dare move the vehicle after that. Due to the centralized location of the hotel, it really wasn’t a problem since you can walk and take the bus most places. We did have reservations to go back in a month but cancelled them to stay somewhere else. When we called to cancel we were told there is a $25.00 cancellation fee – that info wasn’t on our emailed reservation but I looked at the web site and it does say it there. Overall, not going to recommend this place except for location and staff friendliness.

I have never written a negative review for anything before this one. We had 5 people on this trip for 6 nights and was suppossed to be in an "oceanfront edficiency" that would accomodate 6 people.

The room was very narrow with minimal room between the end of the bed and the Tv stand. The beds were the smallest twin bed i ever saw and there was 2 dresser drawers in the entire room ! The pull out bed was simply unfit for anyone to sleep in. It was broke and the sheet cover was filthy when we pulled it out.
I went and asked for a different/ bigger room right after we checked and was told there was none.

Bottom line is we left there the next day to a hotel (not upscale) that was clean and liveable. When i talked to the manager as i left i was told there were plenty of bigger rooms available. Different story than i was told 10 hours earlier. Wouldnt have mattered because of the filth. Never again would i go there.

The Commander offers an indoor and outdoor pool (which was nice). The outdoor pool also included a small outdoor bar area. The hotel has a restaurant, which offered a breakfast buffet. The buffet was not worth 11.95, but the food was pretty decent. Our room included a queen bed, which was comfy. There was also a frig and microwave. All-in-all it was a pretty good experience.

Room Tip: Be sure to check their offer on-line before calling to make a reservation. We paid less after telli...

This was our first time in Ocean City (OC) and it reminded us of being on the Jersey Shore or Myrtle Beach. The boardwalk scene was mainly made up of college student and young adults. We arrived to OC late in the evening without specific hotel reservations. We tried a couple of hotels on the beach before stumbling upon the Commander Hotel. Actually, the clerk at the Holiday Inn recommended the Commander. I was reticent about staying at a hotel whose name did not ring a familiar bell. Nonetheless, we decided this hotel maybe our only shot in the dark. The Commander had vacancy and was quite accommodating to us as we toured at least 4 guest rooms before deciding to stay. Based on the outstanding views that were offered we choose the Captains Suite to spend the next couple of days.

Before I begin to talk about the room I have to share that the day time clerk named Debi was exceptionally warm, genuine, and helpful. In fact, the staff (room cleaners) were pleasant. Everyone made you feel welcome being at the hotel. The rooms at the Commander were comfortable. The bed was exceptional comfortable. The room décor appeared to mimic a washed out Ralph Lauren feel with the nautical blue coloring. I understand the concept, but the room layout and color made you feel as if you were in a cramped ship cabin.

The bathroom was dated and needed some work. There had been an obvious leak in the celling which was visible. Perhaps they may want to change the ceiling tile to get rid of the water damage stain. While we very much wanted a room with a Jacuzzi, we were not pleased with the condition of the Jacuzzi. Since I was on vacation I wanted to leave my cleaning duties for home.

The hotel is situated in a convenient area, roughly mid-way on the boardwalk which makes for a nice center stroll from end to end on the boardwalk. Boardwalk traffic by the hotel was good; not overly crowded. The wifi in the room was temperamental.

The best feature of the room was the over sized, wrap around balcony which offered ocean, boardwalk, and city views. Waking up to a robust sunrise was quite enjoyable.

Room Tip: Must have...over-sized balcony with both beach and city views. Always go for higher floor. Look befo...

For the price we paid for the night, the view was beautiful, the beds were comfortable, the staff was nice enough but the previous guests hair (from unmentionable body parts) in the bathtub and bathroom floor was gross so much that I waited to get a shower until we went home. My only other complaint would have to be about the cleaning staff all hanging out in the parking lot being loud....very unprofessional.

We stayed in one of their Ocean front rooms. We were told it was an updated room but that pretty much probably only consisted of fresh paint. The tv's were old and the one in the living room was nothing but static. The room and hotel were very clean though. The beds were terrible but we overlooked that because the view and location were wonderful.
We were lucky to be close to the 1 ice machine in the entire hotel. They should definitely put a few more around the hotel.
We loved how large the balconies were in the Cabana rooms and asked to see one. They had a huge bathroom w seperate shower and tub. As well as a cook top in the kitchenette. We were able to see the ocean from the balcony as well. We will probably get a room in the Cabana room next year.
I was disappointed that I left 2 shoes there (1 mine and 1 my daughters). I called and was told that nothing turned up. It could have only been there and I just wish they would have looked harder. We found a pair of socks that didnt belong to us next to the bed. Who knows how long they were there?
Also one day while laying by the pool we heard a bunch of yelling and cussing. Turns out members of housecleaning were in a screaming match with eachother in the middle of the street. Totally unprofessional espically when the entire pool area saw and heard everything.
The rest of the staff was so nice and welcoming. Espically the maintenance man whose name I forget and bartender at the pool bar who also waitressed at the restaurant at breakfast.

All and all it was a nice vacation and we will definitly return.

Room Tip: Room on a higher floor. And if you dont have to have Oceanfront room, I would definitely get a caban...
