I agree with the reviewer who said that they will only return during the off season. We were there right before Easter and it was quiet and beautiful. We had a picnic by the lake and played on the rocks. We visited the nature center. It was on par with the other state parks we have visited around the state. The beach areas are tiny and I could easily see how these become overcrowded quickly during the summer and holiday. We have heard that the boat traffic becomes unbearable during the summer. We do not like very touristy areas that are supercrowded so this is not the place for us during the summer. In the off season, however, it is worth a visit.

I rated it 3 stars due to the fact that we will only go during the off season. We tried it once in the middle of the summer, and it was overcrowded with waiting lines every where we went.

Trying to take a boat out on the lake, or worse yet a jet ski, is insane. The state park and the boats ramps are very nice though. Just too many inexperienced rude boaters out there for my family.

Plenty of places for parents to spend money all around the lake area. So be prepared.

Personally, I would never go to Deep Creek Lake on any holiday or weekend during the summer season. But that is my opinion and my family prefers relaxed and mellow as opposed to fast paced and crazy.

If you do go, be sure to check out Black Bear Tavern at night for the adults. They usually have some good bands playing there.

Most people think Maryland is just the Baltimore-Washington axis, but boating & fishing enthusiasts know about Chesapeake Bay. However, hidden away at the opposite end of the state of Maryland is Deep Creek Lake, one of the largest fresh-water bodies anywhere in the Appalachian mountains.
Deep Creek Lake offers the full range of water sports: fishing, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wave-running, and so forth. Every weekend in the summer there is a sailing competition of Flying Scot sailboats. In the winter when the lake freezes, snowmobiles run around the lake to visit the tents of ice-fishermen. There is also a winter ski resort ("The Wisp") adjacent to the north end of the lake.
Many hotels, restaurants, bed&breakfast accommodations, campsites, etc., make it easy for visitors to enjoy Deep Creek Lake. The entire surrounding community is very family-friendly, with additional recreational activities (horseback riding, hiking, white-water rafting) at nearby locations. Renting a house for a week is easy, through a number of agencies, all of whom have their own websites.

Came in the winter, snow one day, ice the next. Roads are well maintained. Went cross-country skiing at a local state park which was lovely.

Great place to set up camp! Campground is crowded in the summer months, but the facilities are nice, bathrooms and showers very clean, rangers extremely helpful and friendly! Black bears live in the area, but keeping a clean camp should help you avoid their visits. Small beach area available and picnic areas. The lake is probably best enjoyed with a boat, but the views are great either way. The local grocery store has supplies if you need them. Each campsite has a fire ring and a bear box. Overall, very nice campground.
