“Wanted to love...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

Miss the old Mealey's, but gave the new a chance. Seeing it freshened up was nice. The larger bar area is a good design. The more mod decor is just jarring and looks too wimpy and cheap in such a large, rustic space. Paper napkins? Really? The menu is a snore. My steak was overlooked, mashed potatoes cold and green beans mushy. The live music started mid-dinner. Nice idea and a good group, but so loud for the four tables getting served. Just not needed. So wanted to see signs this place had last-ability. Just not sure, and it's too bad.

“Not Like the Old Mealey's”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

This place has an identity crisis and needs to decide if it is going to be a fine restaurant or a pub. The ambiance is that of a diner trying to be a four star restaurant. Moderately expensive meals in a dining room with a band setting up. It is February 16 and the Christmas tree was still up. We won't be back.

“Didn't like at all”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2012

Service was average, food was poor and cold, very noisy and prices were not up to value. Disappointed that the restaurant had three beer signs displayed outside, giving it a different appearance than a nice quiet restaurant, Suprised town fathers allow this type of signs.

“Very Poor Food and noise level was high”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2012

Four of us tried out the "new" Mealeys and was very disappointed. We were one of only three tables that evening and they seated us right next to a very large and noisy group. We waited a long time for our food and when it did appear it was disappointing compared to the prices. One of us had the seafood platter and most of the fish on the platter was way over fried and the two very small pieces of some white fish was just laying there very cold and very small. None of us were impressed. About the only part of the evening that we could rate even close to average was the server, who tried to do a good job. Another thing we were very suprised about was the three or four beer signs on each side and front of the outside building. This gave the restaurant that has been billed as a nice dining spot, the appearance of it being a beer "joint" We were suprised that the town fathers allowed this type of establishment in New Market. Bottom line is we will not return...

“Good Brunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2012

After reading mixed reviews, my family and I decided to give Sunday brunch a try at Mealeys. We were pleasantly surprised! Mealeys is definitely not diner food and therefore not priced as such. All dishes are homemade.

Omelets (with no limit as to what you put in them) with potatoes and toast run about $10.95. Eggs with potatoes and toast run from $5 to $7 depending on how many eggs, and meat is extra. This is within $1-$2 of the same menu you get at other local "upscale" breakfast places. My sausage and chz omelet was great. My parents also enjoyed their eggs benedict and pancakes. Coffee was VERY good! And my daughter got free refills on her hot apple cider.

The decor was really nice. A pastel grey on the walls and grey carpet worked well with the exposed brick and huge fireplace, and contrasted with the stark white trim and shutters. Being xmas, it was also exceptionally decorated with lights and garland. At 11am on Sundays, a guitarist comes in to play and sing in the dining room. Overall, we were quite pleased and I'm anxious to return to try their dinner menu.

If you're looking for a more "special" place to have breakfast, I think Mealey's is worth the trip. If you're looking for a diner or chain restaurant experience and prices, then this probably isn't your best choice. For those familiar with the area, there's little difference in price between Mealeys and say the Mount Airy Inn, which I go to often. I'll be sure to post back once I've had dinner at Mealeys and see if my experience is as good as brunch. Starting up a new business is going to have it's bumps, but I think they're on the right track. With more PR effort and support from the local community, they might actually make it this time around.
