“creepy”
Reviewed January 15, 2010

Our visit to The Castle was a huge disappointment. The once magnificent place is now a run-down haunted house. The owners have really let it's condition go. First of all, we got lost trying to find the house, it is located in the middle of a really old industrial town. When we finally found it, we could not help but to notice overgrown landscaping and a crumbling facade. The pictures on their website must be old because they depict a beautifully manicured mansion! We were greeted by a nice man who gave us a tour of the house. The smell was beyond an "old house" smell. The decor is also very old and dingy. Not to mention every room has creepy porcelain dolls in it. I almost fell going upstairs because of the uneven steps due to rotten floorboards (or sinking settlement). The linens on our bed did not look clean and our bathroom had probably never been updated. Except for maybe the soap scum covered shower door. If you are looking for a haunted destination, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a quite, peaceful, relaxing weekend forgo this option and head to the Hampton Inn in Frostburg. That is where we ended up and had a wonderful stay. So, no, we did not end up staying the night at The Castle and they did not refund our money.

We are a local disc jockey service and have had the pleasure many times, to provide entertainment for brides and grooms at The Castle. The Castle's atmosphere takes you back to a Classical Period. From the beautiful pictures on the wall, to the antique wardrobe, you just feel like royalty when you enter. There is such a peaceful feeling as you walk the grounds and the huge pine trees provide a sense of protection.
Judy and Tony are always so accomodating and their hospitality goes above and beyond our expectations. They are so gracious to their guests. Brides and grooms can always expect to see hosts willing to work out all details for a successful ceremony and reception.
The rooms are always waiting ready for the next guest to arrive. The courtyard is breathtaking with flowers and The Castle wall surrounding it.
If you are looking for a magical wedding and reception with owners who are easy to work with, then The Castle is for you.

We had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful and relaxing weekend at the Castle. We booked around one of their "murder mystery" nights.

It was the first time either of us experienced a "murder" in front of our eyes. The actors made the evening enjoyable and we had some great audience interaction. After the mystery was solved we spent hours sitting in the parlor, drinking wine, chatting with other guests, and getting to know our new friends. It is something we will definitely do again.

The relaxing part of the trip was not hard to accomplish. After given a tour of the Castle, and some recommendations for dinner, we went to our room, sat on the luxuriously comfortable bed and took a pre-dinner nap.

Regardless of what others have posted about the Castle being too loud to sleep, we had no issues. I am a very light sleeper, and had no problems. I was a bit worried when we ascended the creaky stairs, but did not hear it in the room.

Saturday was spend hanging out at the Castle. We enjoyed a very quiet day lounging in the library, reading, watching some TV, and taking quite a few naps. We had the place to ourselves, and felt like Lord and Lady of the manor.

Now for the best part- the breakfast!!!!!!!! WOW.......it is truly a personal and very intimate service. The attention to detail is amazing, quality is superb, and the quantity is extensive. Tony does an amazing job.

I would highly recommend a visit to the Castle, we plan on a return trip either in the spring/summer to have a chance to enjoy the grounds. Or attend another "murder" weekend.

I’ve stayed at the castle several times in the last few years and enjoyed the accommodations of each of the rooms. Every room has its own uniqueness and beauty. My most recent stay was in June 2008. On this trip I took the opportunity to enjoy some quiet time to read and relax in the gardens and enjoy the beautiful outside sitting area. The weather was beautiful and my stay went much too quickly. This was my first time staying in Michael’s Chamber. A beautiful room with a gorgeous view of the tree lined driveway leading up to the castle. The bed was so comfortable and the castle so peaceful I didn’t want to get up the next morning. Although this trip was for quiet time, in the past the owners, Tony and Judi, have recommended many activities and local restaurants that I’ve enjoyed immensely. I’ve hiked to the top of “High Point” the highest point in Maryland, climbed the rocks at Dan’s mountain, ridden the steam train from Cumberland to Frostburg, enjoyed water sports at Deep Creek, saw a play in Cumberland and enjoyed a “murder mystery” at the castle. My 13-year old niece and I stayed in the Munday suite in July of 2007. A perfect suite for an aunt/niece get-away. She absolutely loved the castle and Tony went out of his way to make sure her stay was memorable. I could go on and on about the castle, its one of my favorite places to stay and I look forward to every visit.

We have visited The Castle numerous times. It was the place we took our first vacation together years ago, and we go back to visit at least once each year. The hospitality, serenity, atmosphere, and delicious breakfasts are very important to us. If we want to find nearby attractions or entertainment, all we've ever had to do was ask the owners. Sometimes we ride the Western MD Railroad to Frostburg; sometimes we go antique shopping or shop at local discount stores; sometimes we take leisurely walks around Cumberland, Mt. Savage, or The Castle grounds; and other times we just curl up in the Castle's Library and watch a good movie together. There is an Artisan Village nearby that is open most of the year, and we've enjoyed the 20-minute ride there from The Castle more than once. The views in Allegheny and Garrett counties can be breath-taking. On special occasions we treat ourselves to dinner at The Castle, a delicacy that can't be beat for deliciousness, romance, and convenience. We have never visited The Castle and had anything less than a wonderful time!

  • Liked — Atmosphere and friendliness
  • Disliked — We wish we lived closer so we could go visit more often!

We love The Castle and try to go at least once a year. Our special favorite is the Ramsey Room, but we’ve tried each one and they’re all beautiful. The building itself has quite an interesting history and our host Tony is always willing to share stories about its past. The breakfasts are fabulous and beautifully presented. And tea with complimentary wine and refreshments is served at around 4 o’clock, a nice touch at the end of a day. The hosts are so gracious, and always go out of their way to make each stay a new and pleasant one. We love it so much that we even held our wedding there and rented the whole Castle so our families could stay with us … it was a genuinely memorable event. We do a fair amount of travelling to visit friends and family…and for us the Castle is always the trip we most look forward to. The out of town setting gives us much needed peace and quiet. Definitely a great value!

  • Liked — The setting is so peaceful....we really get to rest and relax.
  • Disliked — No internet access...we are computer junkies!

Its sad when nice hosts are so gracious and proud of a place with major problems. We recently experienced an awful stay at the Castle. A fundamental requirement of a good B&B is a restful night's sleep. Could not sleep because of excessive noise from the living room stereo and several clocks which chimed all night. Inexusable!!! Also, the physical property is in a delapidated state, hardly worth the money it costs to stay there. The decorations are terrible and hardly reflect what you would expect in a place that is a real castle. Although the place advertises several types of fireplaces, its a real deception. The wood burning fireplaces in the main living room and library are not used (too bad because a nice crackling fire would help defer all the ungodly kitch and incessant noise that fills this place). The fireplaces in the room are a joke. The only good news here is that the hosts are wonderful. If that is enough to warrant an expensive night's interrupted sleep, stay here.

  • Liked — the hosts and the grounds are beautiful
  • Disliked — too much noise and confusiion not relaxing
