Wonderful experience. Good wine and great ambiance. Red wines are their specialty. Bring your own food and enjoy the winery.

This area of Maryland is known for having an abundance of vineyards so it can be overwhelming to decide which ones to visit. After spending an evening at Elk Run across the street, we decided to try Black Ankle on Sunday.

it’s a very beautiful drive that opens up to a vast display of the rolling hills covered with Vineyards. There is a large parking area with plentiful outdoor seating. We arrived on a Sunday and were offered four tastings for $10. We decided to stay for an hour longer and bought a $34 bottle of Chardonnay and some cheese and meats. This combined for over $100 just for luncheon. The place was busy and full of energy, I could definitely tell that people come here regularly and enjoy the wine and the vivacious atmosphere. I noticed two birthday parties were happening at the luncheon tables.

If you are in the area for a week make this one of your vineyards to see. It may be a little bit more expensive than the surrounding options but the ambience is worth it and the wine is quite tasty. Make sure you bring your own food, especially cheese and meats as it will make the visit a bit less expensive. They offer tours on the weekends as well. Credit cards are accepted.

We have been members since they opened. The wine is excellent. It is by far the best winery in Maryland. I highly recommend it. The staff is good and they treat members well

This place is worth a visit once. The tasting room and patios are uniquely beautiful. That being said, we were very surprised at the prices of the wines. $48 for a bottle of Chardonnay made in Frederick county? Really? And the tastings (only 4 of them) were $14. This is too much money for a place in Maryland with mediocre wine. Go once for the ambiance then try some of the other local wineries that are far less pricey and better tasting.

We’re locals of the area and go wine tasting throughout Virginia and Maryland. We were fairly disappointed with how expensive the tastings ($16 each, 4 wines and a port using a governor), glasses ($14) and bottles ($35-120) were. For such a young winery, the prices seem very difficult to justify. We split a tasting, bought a bottle and some snacks and spent $100. The grounds were beautiful, but fortunately for every other winery, that’s par for the course. The region is gorgeous. All in all, glad we tried it, but there are plenty of other wineries for not nearly so expensive, and much better and more mature wine, in the area. Would absolutely return if prices were more realistic for what it is.
