“I really want to love this restaurant, but...”

with so few restaurants in Baltimore County making any effort to have interesting food in a lively setting, I really want to be able to wholeheartedly endorse Ryleigh's Oyster in Timonium, but so far the experience falls short of the expectation. The oysters are very good, with a nice selection of raw oysters and various preparations. The oyster po boy with the candied bacon is delicious. However, stray beyond oysters and the food is disappointing. Recently a group of 8 met there for a get-together after a long time. The location is great. The ambiance is fun; while it is a little noisy that is ok as it feels happy. The service is good, attentive without being too pushy. But the food just does not live up to its potential. I had a shrimp salad sandwich, which was not nearly as good as shrimp salad you can get at Grauel's. Several people had the scallops, which sounded good but were ordinary. My husband ordered shrimp and grits, which came with risotto instead, as they were out of grits (they did give him a chance to reorder which he did not, so I guess that is his bad) and he said it was rather tasteless. I hope the kitchen can step up their efforts to produce food that is excellent rather than ok, as I really want to love this restaurant.

“Great Fun Place for Good Times and Great Oysters”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

First off, they are not in Hunt Valley! Owners get over that as there is nothing wrong with being part of the vibrant scene in the Cockeysville-Timonium York Road corridor. Tons of young and old folks enjoying good food and drink. Don't be ashamed!

I had an enjoyable time with great food and drinks and fresh oysters! They have a simple, fast traditional menu that covers the bases between seafood, sandwiches, and bar fare. Shades of their Federal Hill original restaurant as this is their second location.

The standout for me was the great variety of oysters available. Cold and very fresh. Possibly a bit overpriced, but couple them with the main menu (a real bargain for the area) and you have a pretty good value. Great drinks as well.

Ok, it may be a bit loud in the bar area. But I would go there for a taste of Federal Hill in Cockeysville. Grab a drink, down some oysters, watch a game, and add a sandwich. You get the idea now!

“Painfully loud”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2014

Always nice to have a new place to go in the local area...but Ryleigh's is a bit of a mixed blessing. Good selection of oysters along with a decent beer selection and decent service. However, the decibel level in the bar is higher than a rock concert. The architect/design firm responsible for the build out was clearly incompetent failing to note the structures concrete slab construction--as a result when the bar reaches about 50% capacity the noise level is enough to make one's ears bleed just from the conversations taking place.
The menu is pretty limited, the highlight of the oyster stew was the three nice plump oysters swimming in a thin milk broth, if you are expecting a New England type oyster stew prepared on a steam table this isn't it, very disappointing.
Probably best to go for happy hour and the 1 dollar oyster specials--other than that it's just expensive and disappointing.

“Vibrant atmosphere but could use some acoustic adjustment to allow us to have a dinner conversation.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014 via mobile

Fabulous oysters, hostesses & wait staff! The remainder of the food was mediocre. Oyster stew was bland even with the addition of salt and pepper. Beet salad was large and flavorful, but could have used a bit of dressing. Brussel sprouts (roasted) were just about burned and had a too sweet flavor to them. Shrimp salad & homemade chip were good choices. Rockfish entree & clam appetizer were also good.

Draft beer would have been better in a chilled glass. It also could have been a bit colder. I was reminded of the warm beer served at Memorial Stadium.

“Good Seafood and Drinks in Hunt Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2014

I had the opportunity to have a Valentine's dinner-date with my wife, so on a whim we went to Ryleigh's Oyster in Hunt Valley. We were not disappointed! They offered 12 or so different types of oysters, so I ordered a half-dozen of oysters from Massachusetts that my server suggested. They were nice-sized and delicious, some of the best I have ever had. At $12-$15 a half dozen the price is not outrageous, but they also have a $1 per oyster happy hour. For dinner I ordered the steak from the special Valentine's Day small plates menu while my wife had the scallops from the regular menu. The steak was delicious paired with finger potatoes and vegetables. The scallops entree seemed small for the price, but my wife enjoyed them. They have several craft beers on the menu with some stouts that pair well with oysters. My wife ordered the Arnold Palmer crush, one of their signature drinks, which was very heavy on the lemon. She would like to try the orange crush next time.

I love craft beer and oysters so this place is perfectly-suited for me! The atmosphere is open and loud with many TVs. So it is better as a happy-hour hangout than for dinner, but you can do both here. The area is lacking in both good seafood and craft beer bars, and Ryleigh's Oyster fills the niche. I look forward to visiting again.
