“Nice, serviceable Marriot, with surprising food”
Reviewed May 29, 2010

This is virtually an extension of a College campus. The inn is clean and well run, with a courteous staff, and no bad surpriseds.
WiFi is included, which should be standard at all price points, a good thing.
A welcome surprise was the Garden Restaurant, where I had a surpisingly juicy steak and fresh asparagus.
The fitness center was above average, too

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and will stay the next time we come for a Maryland game. So close to the Comcast Center. We arrived early on Sat so we went to the lounge. Melvin was working and he was so helpful with our lunch selections. Went to the game and came back to the lounge and ate again just apps but the food coming out to the other tables looked delicious. The room rate was awesome at $82.00 and the room was very clean and well appointed (flat screen, great linens and comfy bed).

This is the fourth time I have stayed at this hotel, but the first time my room was across the courtyard on the conference center side. Check in was a breeze but the room was smaller than I expected. There was no fridge which was strange, but wireless was not only free, it was blazingly fast. I had asked for an extra pillow (can never have enough) when I reserved the room online. A housekeeper brought it to me right after I checked in.
The clock radio had a noise generator (I thought the forest sounds was the best).

I had a nice organic chicken Cobb salad in the Garden Restaurant and was amazed at how good the calamari was in the bar. The staff was pleasant and helpful, but not to the point of being overbearing.

This trip was a business expense; I doubt that I would have spent this much for a room if this was coming out of my own pocket though.

Rooms were small for American standards and Marriott standards. Bathroom was rundown. Room itself was nice but tight for 2 people with luggage. Not very good soundproofing. Heard conversations in other rooms as well as the hallway. Elevator was loud all night. Definitely not worth the hefty $189 a night price tag. Luckily it was expensed. Onsite lounge was nice, but limited selection of food. Starbucks was pricey and slow service but convenient. Did not try the other restaurant on site. Only way to get to Metro is to go to the Student Center on campus and take the 104 shuttle (anyone can ride this we learned) to the College Park Metro....then you are minutes from the DC hotspots for night life because College Park is basically a ghost town. Very difficult to find a decent restaurant the one night we didn't feel like going down to DC.

While this IS a Marriott property it is more like it's name states: a hotel in a small conference center. In other words, do not arrive expecting a grand hotel or quaint inn experience and it could be just what you're looking for.
PROS:
-Front desk staff. Very friendly, helpful, seem to enjoy their jobs.
-Small cafe/pub/bar and Starbucks in building directly across from front hotel courtyard are very nice, inexpensive.
-Nice shower!
-Wi-Fi throughout.
-Quiet rooms, quiet halls.
-Location to campus, location to football stadium. Feels safe, well-lit, etc.
CONS:
-Bed comfort and room decor are more like a Residence Inn than a Marriott (which is not bad but this is just to make you aware)
-Parking garage and the building with the cafe/pub are NOT connected at all to the hotel therefore you must walk out in the rain to get to either.
-Nearest metro station is a 25-30 minute walk from hotel (no shuttle, van, etc.)
-Nearest restaurants/bars are a good drive away, don't plan on walking anywhere other than campus/stadium.
-Parking garage is farthest building from hotel & very expensive even for hotel guests in an area that is spacious, not crowded & really shouldn't warrant parking fees at all, i.e.; not downtain DC, Manhattan, Philly, etc.
OVERALL GRADE: B

Booked a room on the Marriott website for 84 dollars. Best value for Marriott I have seen in a long time. The hotel is clean well run and was up to the Marriott standards. They have gone green with special toilets and shower heads. One of the better showers I have seen in the hotel. Had breakfast in the hotel, basic hotel food good , but to expensive.

I would return any time.

My colleague and I attended a 3 day conference held at the hotel. As described in other reviews the rooms were small but clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. On the other hand, the hotel, while located on the UMD campus, is isolated, with no other eateries or shops nearby. This wouldn't be so bad if the hotel restaurants had decent hours, but at 4 pm on a Thursday the only place open was the Starbucks. Moreover, travelers to the DC area who are planning to using the Metro should note that the hotel is miles from the College Park Metro stop and that the hotel doesn't offer a shuttle (complimentary or otherwise). Lastly, I will note that conferees not staying at the hotel had to pony up $10 to park (cash only).

Bottom line: For a $179 + tax per night I couldn't meet with colleagues over a beer and a sandwich in the afternoon, without getting away (far away) from the hotel.
