So where is a likely good place for great barbeque?
a. A smoky cabin with a hand painted BBQ sign by the roadside in South Carolina
b. A restaurant decorated with neon signs and cartoons of pigs in Memphis
c. A suburban shopping center in Hagerstown, Maryland
Give up? The answer is "All of the above"
From the outside, the Hempen Hill BBQ almost looks like a pizza place nestled among the strip shopping center facades, but inside it's serious BBQ all the way. We pulled in on a bus trip with over 50 people and were seated and served quickly and efficiently.(It was prearranged) Most people got the pulled pork and the only compliant was that there was too much to eat for lunch.
The pork was piled high and had a nice vinegary tang. If you are passing through Hagerstown, give it a try.
The only negative is the place's logo, a chicken with the photoshopped head of a pig. It is supposed to convey the idea of "freakishly good BBQ", but It's vaguely disturbing enough to make you go Vegan.
