Friendly staff, good location, but long in the tooth, thin walls, and exceedingly loud air conditioning unit..

I stay in Gaithersburg about twice a year and have probably stayed at the Residence Inn 4 times. Staff are always really friendly and welcoming. The manager e-mailed me to make sure the reservation was correct and called me by name throughout my stay. Well impressed. Hotel is quiet and we like the suites. They have been updated over the last couple of years and now looks smart. Location near Rio Center is good. You can walk (unusual for US) to restaurants round the lake, of which a couple are decent (Guapos Mexican and Redrock Canyon Grill
but the noise inside can be excessive is it's full and everyone talks at once). I'd avoid Raaz, the Indian, was ok a couple of years ago, but has gone downhill.

We used this hotel for a family reunion (about 7 rooms) plus we rented the meeting room off the lobby, and everyone was quite happy with the accommodations, the service, and the prices. All of the rooms were nice sized, and when we whipped up a huge family banquet (actually just warming up food baked in advance), we put many of the kitchens to work and all of the equipment performed well. The whole property was quite comfy and homey. We all enjoyed the breakfast buffet. The staff was very helpful with our needs for the meeting room. Because of the time of year, the outdoor pool was not yet filled, but we were able to get in some swimming at a next door Marriott property with an indoor pool. In a situation like this with many families involved, it is often hard to please everyone, but this RI certainly sent all of us home more than satisfied.

We stayed at the R.I. for several days as part of a househunting trip. Even though the rooms were a bit small (we were in a 1 bed suite), it was a great stay. We enjoyed the pool and breakfast every day. And the entire front desk staff were terrific! I liked being able to walk over to the Rio center and we used the little playground next to the lake there, as well as the restaurants. It was also really clean!

We didn't notice the road noise too much (the hotel is next to the expressway), but it might help to have a room away from the road.

this is the first time we have stayed at a residence inn. We where VERY pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The price was reasonable, and the free breakfast just across the parking lot made it such a nice convenience. The staff was wonderful. The room was very neat and clean. It was roomier than I expected. We stayed in a little studio room. It had everything you would need. They even will load and run the dishwasher for you. And it was easily within walking distance to all the stores at Washingtonian center, which was fun. It's a good place to stay while touring DC. Or in our case visiting family in Gaithersburg.
I will stay again.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2007

Overview: My wife and I visit Washington, DC, on a somewhat regular basis. As such, we’ve had the opportunity to stay at a number of hotels in and around the city. This is the first time that we’ve stayed at this particular Residence Inn. The reason we chose Gaithersburg instead of staying in DC itself was that we had to stay at a hotel that offered non-parking garage parking, as our vehicle had a large rooftop carrier on it during this trip. The hotels we usually stay in either did not have that option or were booked. Other DC area hotels we’ve stayed in recently include the Marriott Wardman Park, the Omni Shoreham, the Residence Inn (Dupont Circle), the Residence Inn (Bethesda), and the Embassy Suites (Freedom Heights).

Three reasons why you’d want to stay here: 1) The location is just off of Rte 270 and is about 30 minutes from DC by car – a good option if you want to stay just out of the city (and pay less for accommodations and parking). The Metro’s Shady Grove (Red Line) station is a couple of miles away. 2) There is a daily breakfast buffet – nothing special - included in the price. 3) There is a really nice retail/entertainment complex within walking distance from the hotel. The nicely landscaped complex includes about ten restaurants, stores (including Target, Kohls, Barnes and Nobles, Dick’s Sports, etc.) and a Cineplex.

Some reasons why you wouldn’t: 1) The rooms are smaller than a typical Residence Inn and the room had a ‘tired’ look and feel to it: stains/burns on the carpet, small TV’s and worn cushions. The bathroom was quite small. Refrigerator’s ice maker didn’t work properly. 2) Even though the rate comes with a daily buffet breakfast, there really isn’t enough room in the Gatehouse dining room to accommodate everyone who wants to eat there. Both days it was very crowded and we ended up carrying our breakfast – as best we could because there weren’t any trays to be had – back to our room.

Conclusion: All in all, we would recommend this Residence Inn but with some reservation. There other hotel options nearby (Courtyard, Marriott, Spring Hill Suites, Hilton) that we will try next time if the need arises to stay in this area, instead of this RI.
