“Location makes a good hotel great”
Reviewed June 6, 2010

I had not stayed in a Courtyard for many years so I was anxious to see how the recent chain-wide upgrades have turned out. I was not disappointed.

I had a large room on the eighth floor with a nice view of the artificial lake (and, unfortunately, the highways). The location is good for me when travelling to Washington for business. I drive approximately 10 minutes to the Shady Grove Metro station for my trip to the city.

The hotel is located in a pleasant complex of shops, restaurants, cinema, and health club. The restaurants have a wide variety. The shops are standard, but be sure to check out the 2-storey Target with an escalator for your shopping cart. I love the variety of restaurants and hope to try more of them on my next visit.

I have two minor complaints. The first is that the breakfast does not start early enough. I had to be in DC by 7:30 AM, which means I had to leave the hotel before the breakfast was available. I had to settle for a cup of coffee and danish in Metro Center. The other minor complaint is that I could not find the business center and didn't have time to ask where it was. I needed to have something printed as I was leaving for a meeting I was attending, I ended up calling a colleague to have her print it and bring it to the meeting.

All-in-all, however, I had a good stay and would stay here again.

I'll keep this short and to the point. The hotel is a standard Marriott, which is a good thing. Rooms and the hotel are new and well kept. Nothing to complain about with the rooms and the hotel layout. Restaurant is nothing exciting, but the food is decent.

Best part of the hotel is the ability to take a walk to the 10+ restaurants right outside the door. One poster mentioned it is away from the main areas of Gaithersburg....what main areas? It's not in walking distance to the Metro, but then again who takes a train this far away from DC (FYI...going to DC, don't stay here)?

It has everything a business traveler needs and their service is excellent. Restaurant can be improved, but given I have been their months at a time, it seems to have improved.

In short, if you are a business traveler, this is a great place to be. Tourist, stay in DC.

I spent a total of 7 nights at this hotel during two business trips over the past month. I like almost everythng about this hotel; it is among the cleanest properties I have ever visited, and the hoteI is quiet in the evening, allowing for much-needed sleep. The employees at the front desk are extremely nice and efficient. Because this is a Courtyard, services are somewhat limited. But with a number of restaurants, stores and even a movie theatre within the complex, visitors never need to be hungry, thirsty or bored. I note a few minor opportunities for improvement: Water pressure in the shower is low, shower water was not hot on a Monday morning, and room service (provided by a local restaurant) has extremely limited hours and refused to bring a requested cup of ice water. But these are minor issues. I recommend this hotel and will use it for future vists to the Gaithersburg area. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

This hotel is out of the way, not near a Metro and so even if you need to be in Gaithersburg, it is not v. convenient. Located right next to a lot of shops and restaurants which is the biggest saving grace. The restaurant service is abysmal in the morning. The waitress I had either did not understand English or did not care to respond to a civil question about the menu, which it took a very long time to even get. No one even comes to seat you. They appear to be understaffed and rude on top of it. The coffee is undrinkable. Internet is $12 a day. The "fitness center" is underequipped for the size of the hotel and has limited equipment.

The best thing about this hotel is its proximity to restaurants, Starbucks and a cinema. The worst thing is the taste of the free coffee on offer in the lobby.

I've stayed at both this Courtyard Marriott and the regular Marriott a 3 minute walk down the lake (Marriott Washingtonian) and this one is a litte better overall because the rates are cheaper, internet is free, and it's a few minutes walk closer to the shops and restaurants. It's at the end of a kind of upscale "faux" downtown area made for pedestrians, so it's a great location if you don't have a car but don't want to be stuck in the room.

But if you have to work in the room, the desk is larger than most, with a wheelable pull-out section you can turn into a second desk or a big L-shape. The furnishings and decor are modern and newer (except the TV, which for some reason is the old 1990's tube style), and the wired internet is true high speed.

The only things I didn't like was it was a little drafty in the room (I visited during a cold spell in the winter) because the wall heating/AC unit directly linked to the outside, and some cold air leaked through and made the floor area by the desk cold. And the towels and beds, while comfortable, weren't quite as plush as the Marriott just down the street. But those were minor. Overall I'd say this is one of the better places to stay if you're working or visiting north of the D.C. beltway, just because of the proximity to the concentrated shopping and eating places, which are normally widely spread out in the suburbs there.

Excellent hotel location on a lake with great restaurants, shopping and entertanment within a short walk. 20 min. drive to DC. Good weekend rates for this market. Would stay there again.
