“Dog Friendly Gourmet Paradise”
Reviewed April 28, 2008

This place came highly reccomended from a coworker of mine, and definitely lived up to all the hype! We took the dog for the weekend and had such a relaxing time that we are already looking forward to when we can come back! Below are some of the our highlights-

Accomodations- Our cabin was very spacious (2 floors) and decorated like something out of pottery barn. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in! We probably spent most of our time though, just sitting on our private wide porch in the rocking chairs and just enjoying the quiet of the woods.

Food- The lodge restaurant is great! The food is on par with a good restaurant in DC. We ate breakfast and dinner outside on the deck overlooking the woods, and both meals were amazing! Also I liked that they had a fully stocked bar with a great wine list, try the One Sweet World Choc Martini, its unbelievable!

Staff- Everyone there is so nice! It really made our weekend special, having such friendly people taking care of us. I have to say a special thanks to Lee, Dennis, and Dave, these guys will definitely treat you like a VIP!

Dog Friendly- We loved that we could bring our dog and that the Lodge made it so easy to take care of them there (clean up stations, dog biscuits, bowls, etc). You can tell that the owners of Savage River love dogs as much as we do!

Picnic Baskets- I really liked getting a picnic basket delivered to our doorstep every morning filled with fresh orange juice, homemade delicous muffins, and dog treats. To me this was just heaven!

Hiking- There are many outdoor activities to choose from, but we decided to go hiking. The trails and scenery were great. And we really liked the fact that even though it was a Saturday, we went 2 hours and only saw 1 other group of hikers.

All in all great weekend getaway! Would definitely come again!

Our weekend at SRL was exactly what we were looking for. We were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary with our best friends. SRL allowed the right amount of relaxation and physical activity. If you enjoy hiking, you'll find great trails. If you enjoy relaxing around a fire and being pampered, you'll find that option as well. The staff was very warm and friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversations with them. The restaurant was quite good and the muffins in the morning were great. The bonfire in the evening was a lot of fun -- lively conversations with people from other areas of the country.

We look forward to our next trip.

  • Liked — The beds were very comfortable
  • Disliked — The gas fireplaces in the cabins were not work yet (but it really was still almost summer).

Savage River Lodge provided a tranquil, full service weekend getaway. The scenery is stunning and multiple well manicured trails emanate from the property. The cabins are well-equiped with wonderful bedding, large bathroom, and muffins, juice, and a newspaper are brought to your porch each morning. But what is really special is the service! You are made to feel that your patronage is truly appreciated - great wait staff in the dining room and the owners/managers are frequently checking to see if you are satisfied, need advice for great fishing or hiking locations, and just sharing stories and good conversation. I will definitely visit again!

We found Savage River Lodge via Google. It was the perfect place for a Labor Day weekend together. No TV, no phones, no internet (Although a copy of the Washington Post was included in the breakfast basket delivered to our door step each morning). Just time together with our respective dogs in a charming wooded resort. The staff could not be friendlier or more helpful. We dined (reservations required) at the Lodge restaurant on the deck over looking a beautiful wooded valley. Manager Lee and our waiter Nick were a treat. A running gag after the first evening was the violin playing.

It's a bit off the beaten trail, but not an objectionable drive. Plenty of activities are available from hiking to bike riding to camp fires to "Yappy Hours" for our canine friends. But, for the two of us it turned out to be a time of rest, relaxation and just enjoying our uninterrupted time together. You can't put a price on that.

We recently spent one night at Savage River Lodge and found it very charming. The cabin was nice...especially the loft bedroom. The setting was gorgeous and really peaceful. We did some hiking and found the trails to be well kept and marked. Loved the restaurant and bar. Lee, the restaurant manager, took great care of us and our waiters, Nick (for dinner) and Dan (for lunch the following day), were extremely friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was great. Two thumbs up for all the staff we interacted with. We took our dog along and he was extremely welcome too....he even had a little cheese biscuit in the breakfast basket. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, would love to return and would definitely recommend it to friends. It you're looking for a quiet getaway with lots of comfortable charm, this is it.

When I searched for a romantic getaway on the internet, I came across
the Savage River Lodge. You always hope that the pictures you see will be at least close when you get to your destination and I have to
say that I was surprised when it was all I was expecting and more. The lodge is beautiful, the people are wonderful. It's as if you are coming back home after being away for a long time. Even Bodhi, the owner's dog, greets you. When we drove down the lane to the cabins, the rest of the world disappeared and the cabins appeared tucked into the woods. Everything you need, simple, beautiful, comfortable and quiet.

In the morning they deliver homemade muffins and orange juice to your door in a basket. We appreciated all the little extras, like extra pillows, blankets, the coffee maker, mini refrigerator, ect. We had a reservation at the restaurant and service and food absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to go back for a weekend to experience it in all the seasons.

What a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I've only just found this site. What a treasure. I am amazed at the amount of effort and detail in the reviews. It really helps to know WHAT people loved and hated. Our experience was mostly like those who didn't really care for this place. I have seen reviews of the food on a DC-area food board (and wrote one) but the detailed comments - positive and negative - just helped me to decide to cancel a booking for October. We booked after enduring a long, cold, miserable hike, and then, upon sitting down to dinner at the SRL, hearing from the waiter about the huge soaking tubs. At that point, I was ready to ask if we could just book a bath! Plus, he showed us a trail map of the many well-marked trails, and that also appealed to us. We got carried away, even though we thought $220 per night, not including breakfast (just muffins and juice - those had better be the word's best muffins!) was too high.

Our dinner was mixed - mostly good, but my pecan-crusted trout was dreadful. The pecan coating was so sweet with maple syrup as to be inedible. Why would anyone do such a terrible thing to a piece of delicate fish? I had assumed it would be crushed or ground pecans, not big pecan pieces that had been drowned in maple syrup. The salads were fresh and very good, and my husband loved the meatloaf. Generally, the menu is nothing but heavy, overly complex foods that are not well-executed. There seems to be no professional in the kitchen. The dessert - berry cobbler - was made to order with fresh berries, but was lacking in flavor and they'd let the dry, flavorless topping get charred.

There were some things that bothered us. For instance, the waiter told us they feed the deer. That really turned us off. Then reading about some of the "attitude" problems that people encountered, and an article in the Baltimore Sun about the owner
getting special treatment from the Maryland DNR at the behest of a state senator who is a personal friend of the owner - these things enforced the negative impression I got when they said that if we canceled - even MONTHS in advance, they'd refund all but 10%. That's nuts. I am canceling an October reservation in May, and they won't refund all of it? I understand the reason for the policy, but I think they take it too far. Granted, it is ony $22, but that isn't the point.

Also, we love dogs (and kids) but don't want to listen to other peoples' dogs bark (or other peoples' kids scream and cry) all night or early in the morning - especially not for that kind of money.

For $220/night, plus the cost of dinner and breakfast (figure over $300 for the one night), I don't want to worry about attitude problems
