We booked an overnight stay the weekend of July 28, 2007. We drove past the resort many times on Interstate 68 and it looked like a charming place for a visit.
To give you some perspective we usually stay at Marriott properties. We booked the Bed & Breakfast package which included the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning.
The resort is set in a idyllic valley with plenty of activities. There is a lot of Maryland sandstone on the interior and lots of local art hanging in the lobbies.
The staff was efficient and friendly. We had the dinner buffet which was a bit pricey at $28 but the selection was very good and desserts sinful. The breakfast buffet was $17 and again a fine selection.
The room was a nice size but the bathroom small. We had the lakeview side of the hotel and well worth the extra fee. The A/C cooled the room quickly and was on the quiet side.
There were plenty of activities for kids including a campfire in the evening. The pool was small. There was a beach within walking distance of the resort. Various watercraft (canoes, kayaks and paddle-boats) could be rented. Our kids are older and no longer travel with us but I would recommend this resort to families.
The golf course looked great but we are not golfers so I cannot comment on it.
We hiked around the lake on a well-maintained and well-marked trail. We also relaxed by the lake reading and occassionally watching the ducks and birds. The lake is electric motor only so there were no speedboats or jet skiis.
Overall, a great setting with fine food and lots of activities for the granola types and others looking for a weekend getwaway. The resort is on our return list.

Its a beautiful location, the property is nice and the food is decent. The service from most of the staff was also good. You can't beat the location and its proximity to Baltimore and Washington.

First time we went there we would have raved (May 2007). But the second time was not so good. The Bathroom was dirty and they did make a genuine effort to correct the problem to our satisfaction. They gave us 10% off but we just wanted a clean room. Our room's carpet was also in need of attention. I would recommend this place easily if they cleaned the rooms better. In the end all people really want is a clean room.

I did not use the pool, but the water did not look clean because it was a little cloudy. I have a spa at home so I know that is not a great sign.

Received a special rate on a weeknight stay through Travelzoo of $94 for one night. We were mostly interested in the hiking opportunities in the area of the resort, so this provided a convenient location to spend the night before our morning hike. Arrived late (around 9 PM). Staff was friendly and courteous, offering us our choice of floors based on room availability. Our room was clean and comfortable with a king size bed (nice!) and comparable to a 3 - 3.5 star hotel room. Loud children in the hallway who were staying in the room next door were not audible once they were inside. Entire facility was smoke-free (nice again!). Ate dinner in the lounge and lunch at the Lakeside Bar and Grill - food was average bar fare, well-prepared but typical of most hotels. Main restaurant seemed very expensive (entrees of $20+) and wasn't serving what we were looking for, anyway. On the day of our hike, staff was very accomodating, allowing us to leave our bags (even after we had technically checked out) in the bell room while we were out. Hiked the Evitt Homesite Trail that felt, smelled and looked remarkably like a Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest (complete with rain!). The first 1.5 miles offered the best and most strenuous portion of the hike. The remaining distance was mostly through typical rocky forest with a well blazed, well-cleared trail. No sweeping views available until crossing the Mason Dixon Line some 2.5 miles later. If rain is in the forecast, be sure and bring appropriate gear. We were pleased to find shower facilities near the pool area where we could quickly shower after our hike but before our departure. We both agreed that we would return, but not at the usual full price of around $200 per night.

Having family from this area I had driven past the lodge many times and had always meant to book a stay, now I wish I had been able to stay more than one night.
For a family event my brother, my husband and I shared a lakefront view room with two queen beds. Upon arrival we decided to self park instead of valet, and depending on how many cars are already occupying the three level outdoor parking lot you may have perhaps a 50 yard walk to the lobby entrance. If you are parked in the two lower areas you will have to walk up a set of stairs, but they seemed to have ample handicapped parking available alleviating the need for a ramp on the lower levels. We were pleasantly greeted by the front desk attendant, and check in was quick and easy. The lobby was open & inviting and a nice escape from the still chilly weather in western Maryland in April. We were located on the fifth floor, and the rooms seemed to be properly insulated since we never had a problem with noise from others staying on the floor. The room was not unlike a regular room you might find through a chain hotel. Two queen size beds with a comfortable mattress, pillows and bedding, two arm chairs and one ottoman, a desk with chair, one end table between the two beds, an armoire with TV, and a minibar. There was no closet, and the armoire was rather small, but efficient for our needs for just one night. There was a coffee maker and minibar that states it is clearly a minibar, and not a mini refrigerator that would be sufficient enough to hold and store leftover food. The lodge offers mini refrigerators that can be brought to the room for an extra cost, but the minibar was fine for the couple of drinks that we had brought with us.
We ate dinner in the Lakeside Bar (the Signatures Bar and Grill was not open), and though the prices were on the high side the food and service were good. After leaving the hotel in the evening for our family event we returned to the bar later in the evening for a drink only to find that there was only 1 bartender on duty for the entire bar area and at least 40 people from a real estate conference that was being held at the lodge. I wouldn't expect it to be as busy on a regular Wednesday night, but it would have been nice to have a full staff available. The other patrons were loud and obnoxious so we had one drink and returned to our room for the evening. We were happily surprised that in the morning we were the only table in the large Lakeside Restaurant for breakfast. We were seated right by the window and though the food was also on the expensive side our breakfast was great. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the ducks and birds eat from the feeder outside our window while we ate. Even when we were finished there were still only two other tables that had joined the breakfast room.
We had a quick and easy check out, and took a walk around the lodge by the lake before leaving Rocky Gap. The weather was overcast and chilly for us, but I'm sure that when the weather is warmer the trails and activities are a great way to spend your time. Because of our stort stay we did not get a chance to experience the spa, golf course, pool or the exercise room. We would like to return another time for an extended period to take advantage of all that the lodge has to offer.

Nice for a getaway, but a little on the expensive side for the quality of the rooms. Actually, expensive for everything - food, drinks, lodging, spa. Lakeside rooms allow the best view. Room rates advertised online were somewhat lower than than what we actually paid. If you've got money to spare, stay here.
