We stayed at the Rocky Gap this past weekend as a get away with our soon to be four year old daughter. We were looking for a local resort with plenty of outdoor activities for a little girl. The Rocky Gap fit the bill. The resort is on the shores of a lake in Rocky Gap State Park in western Maryland. In addition to hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, geocaching, and many other on-site activities, the resort offers off-site activities through an outfitter. We chose horesback riding as our off site activity but there were many more to choose from. The resort also has a campfire and marshmallow roast every evening during the summer and scheduled activities every day of the week. The hotel would not confirm an early check in but they did have a room available when we arrived at noon. The rooms were clean and fairly modern, ours was a little small but other rooms in the resort are quite large.
This was our first visit as the resort is located within an hour of two world class resorts: Nemacolin Woodlands and the newly renovated historical Bedford Springs and we have traditionally stayed at those properties. However, art, architecture, and multi-course dinners aren't up my daughter's alley so we opted for a more family friendly resort. The Rocky Gap fills a needed niche by combining above average food and plentiful activities with a child friendly, casual atmosphere. There were many kids but the property is large enough that we didn't feel overrun. The main restaurant offered what I would consider above average but not gourmet dining. Dinner service was good, breakfast was a little slow but still acceptable.
Our only complaint was lunch (or should I say lack of it) at "Signatures" Bar and Grill. After waiting 45 minutes for chicken fingers and 2 salads we had to leave without eating to make our horseback appointment. The worst part was that when another guset complained about the service one of the workers replied "What do you expect me to do about it?" This was however an isolated incident and the remainder of the resort staff went out of their way to be helpful.
This was a great trip for a family with children. If you are looking for an adults only weekend I highly recommend Nemacolin or Bedford Springs but if kids are part of the equation you can't beat the Rocky Gap at less than 1/2 the price.
