the crab cake I had was good and we enjoyed visiting with one of the ladies who runs the place. We asked if she was a native and she said she used to be married to a minister there. They left the island for a while and then after he died she came back. I think the charm of the place was in the ladies who ran it and the unique store - many, many objects that could be purchased, fun.

Keep in mind Ruke's has items that are "in season". That means you may have Soft Crabs but then not Crabcakes, and vice/versa. I have a personal favorite that may NOT be your. Islanders love their "Cheesesteak Sub with Everything"....cooked on a Forman-like grill and a big sloppy mess. I love it, but not what you'll compare to a Philly Cheesesteak. The closing time varies with the season or day of the week, so CHECK if you're staying on the island or you'll go hungry! On the day that we were there, the were closing at 4pm for the day, so we ordered take-out to take back to our B&B.

A quaint and eclectic spot to enjoy delicious crab cakes with a nice view of the waterfront. Ask for the outside seating in the screened in porch and enjoy the view as you eat. We loved the crab cakes and the coleslaw the most, but there were plenty of other options, too.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was very nice & we got a history lesson from the owner/manager. Our crab cakes were one of the best we've ever had! Enjoyed sitting out on the screened in porch with the bike sculpture (inside joke w/owner) Lol!

We are what you would call "regulars" at Ruke's as we always make a stop whenever we come to Smith Island. The food is made-to-order and always served hot and fresh. Love the crab cakes, soft shell crabs, and homemade coleslaw! They accommodate children with standard kids cuisine including chicken tenders, fries, burger, etc. The cake is homemade by a local islander and should not be missed. You can walk off the extra calories as this is definitely the day to ditch the diet! The atmosphere is a blend of vintage charm, old antique pieces, and plain old Island history. Kids can run in and out in the safety of the Island. The canned figs and jams are to die for and a must-have for day trippers. This is an old fashioned store where locals gather to catch up, eat good food, and mingle with neighbors. The Islanders are quite friendly to tourists and it is a great site to inquire about life on the Island. The historical tour by John provides an opportunity to learn of Island history and see sites that would be missed if you self guide via golf cart, bike, or walking. This is always a stop for dinner, lunch, and good conversation. Many locals get carryout and stop in just for a quick hello and a resting place during the busy crab season. An Island landmark not to be missed...
