We really enjoyed our trip to the B&O Railroad Museum. The museum is set up so well. Though we didn't have children with us, I was so impressed to see an attractive play area for children, with comfy rockers for tired parents. What a nice family-friendly touch. There is a lot to see and the trains are just beautifully restored, and the information on them provided is interesting and helpful. When one of the volunteers found out that it was our first time there, he gave us pretty much our own private tour of the roundhouse. He was very interesting and seemed very happy to share his great knowledge. The facility is so well done. Thank you for an enjoyable morning!

A must visit if you like trains. Required for grandfathers and boys under 8. A unique museum in the US, nothing else like it. The whole history of the railroad laid out before you.

The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore offers visitors a unique view into the history of trains and railroads in America. The museum is set up in a circular building and the spaces are designed to walk you through the history of train travel from horse and carriage, to the steam powered engines. As you walk around the museum, there are a few of the trains that you can enter that will give you more details about the interiors of the locomotives. And, around the walls of the museum and at a few stations (no pun intended!) there are kid fun stations that are train related.

In addition, a top notch model railroad is set up for display and is running inside of an actual train car!

For a few extra bucks, you can also take a ride on one of these trains (Although we decided to skip that). We spent about an hour in this museum (without riding the train), so plan on at least an hour or more here. If someone in your traveling party is a fan of trains, make this a must-visit stop on your trip to Baltimore.

We live about an hour away and visited Baltimore this weekend for an unrelated children's event. The next morning we turned on the television and saw a commercial for the B&O Railroad Museum and decided to go for the heck of it -- and for the fact that our 2.5 year old loves (okay, he is more like OBSESSED with) trains.

It was such a fantastic museum and a CAN'T MISS for parents who have kids that like trains! We had so much fun as a family. My son enjoyed the many hands-on activities, like coloring pictures of trains, playing with LEGO trains, playing with their many train tables, climbing into the cab of a steam locomotive and watching a railroad movie in the theatre car. They also offer train rides on the first commercial railroad track in America. These rides are an additional fee but are 20-25 minutes long and very relaxing. We went in the winter and had a special guest on board. Yep, Frosty the Snowman joined us and gave each kid a candy!

We also thought that the visit would be short and sweet and that the museum would be small and boring. We were WAY wrong. We stayed 3+ hours, it was huge with at least 40+ trains, and everyone learned a great deal in a fun way as there wasn't an information overload like some other museums!

Visited here last year when in Ellicott City shopping. My granddad was a brakeman for the Chessie system (Chesapeake and Ohio) in his life so this was fascinating to me. Ellicott City itself is fascinating and very haunted...Tried to submit reviews for ghost tours here but weren't accepted. I have been on two with different tourguides and have taken many pictures that show orbs, energies of departed spirits, and they're prevalent, especially around the area of this museum. The old train tracks that are still used and the woods and small creek around this part of the town have a lot of activity too. Anyone who enjoys railroads and history will love this museum and this very old section of Mid Maryland.
