Hard to rate this place. We are frequent diners in many Ellicott City and Catonsville restaurants. Several people had recommended the Rumor Mill, so we finally tried it. Very excited by the online menu- we hoped it would be good. We planned this as a date night- 60 years old but taking care of elderly mom so this time out was as important to us as if we had babies at home!
Bottom line- wonderful food!! We were so thrilled to find a new place for us to enjoy top of the line small plates. UNFORTUNATELY, we ordered a sparkling rosé from the special summer menu. Looked great- tasted great. Never dreamed that there were TWO on the wine list and when the check came, this one was $42 instead of the $30 one we thought we ordered. Disturbing BUT not at all as disturbing as the appearance of someone who challenged us "to split the difference "and acted as if we were trying to pull a fast one. The wine had never been shown to us, sat in a wine bucket away from the table, and when we did finally see the label we thought maybe WE were being ripped off. Horrible attitude toward us- ruined our whole experience there. Needless to say we will never return nor will we recommend to anyone. Sad to have this all happen over a wine that retails at $15!!! Even sadder that the man who soured our experience turns out to be the owner!!! Bad business practice- we'll stick to Regions in C-ville!

I love their drinks and they have the best beef sliders that you can ever have! they have dozens of different vodkas that they infused themselves. It's a tapas place (not spanish tapas). I do suggest they open the kitchen until they close. We went the one night past 9:30 and they were not serving food; we were very disappointed because we really like this but had to go somewhere else to eat.

The new management, last few years, really made a difference-but the true delight of this charming small place is the imaginative, excellent chef. Small plates of top quality foods prepared with interesting varied ingredients such as "cusabi" sauce-(cukes+wasabi--really good!) and sushi grade salmon and ahi--appetizers to desserts are limited in number but unerringly delicious and never "run of the mill", same old same old we see so many pplaces. Did I mention, prices are pretty reasonable?

He is a moody and can be obnoxious to guests, which is surprising for a young restaurant owner who you think would be making more of an effort. I am sure he can turn on the contrived charm when he feels he has to though (hopefully). But, this review (one-star) is not driven by him or any personal issues (he was fine to us). The long and short is that this establishment could and should be more, but totally isn't. Seemingly 'not fresh/frozen' ingredients -- I haven't personally witnessed the Sysco truck pulling up, but that's what it tastes like. Though it make take a moment for your taste buds to realize it after you finally cut through the uninventive sauces that they seem to slather on everything. Really wish it was more, as I root for all the local restaurants to deliver and add to the OEC experience, but this one isn't...

Eight members of our family ended up at the Rumor Mill by accident after having already parked on Main Street in Ellicott City and finding the restaurant closed that we had intended to visit. We spied The Rumor Mill and decided to give it a try. We all found it a new and delightful experience. The restaurant is quite unique in that it does not serve regular entrees, but rather serves tapas type plates that are meant to be shared by a couple or passed around the table. So I would not recommend going if you are looking for a traditional salad and entree. We had fun ordering quite a few different items and sharing most of them. All were quite good. The desserts are all homemade and are really yummy. Our particular waiter was extremely attentive, and we found the atmosphere nice and conducive to chatting with one another between dishes.
