You can hike as far or short as you like. This is serious hiking, steep in some areas with rocks for steps in some areas and loose rocks in others. It is well marked; and there was lots of trail maps at the beginning of the place I decided to start at. As you pull off the main road into the road for the Mt., it is a little confusing. There is 3 parking areas, which means you can start at three different locations, and there is occasional parking along the side of the road as you drive up the mountain, which means you can start in those locations also. Take LOTS OF WATER, and you should have hiking shoes and poles if you are not in perfect health. It is a closed trail hike, meaning there is only few spots that you can see out of the tree line to view down the mtn, over the valley. Lots of leaves were already fallen from the trees which mad the hike even prettier. If you can get away from noisy guests on the trail you will see lots of deer. Obviously they have seen many hikers. Some trails are marked with the 1/2 mile markers. Know your limitations before you go. This is a lot of up and down hiking. This area opens at 8:00 am and closes at dusk. Have fun!

Put on your hiking boots and grab a water bottle - this place is a treat. Sugarloaf Mountain is privately owned but has been made graciously available to the public. There's one mail road, which is one way for the most part, that leads you to several parking areas. I always drive to the upper-most area. From the parking lot, there are a few well marked trails to take you to the rocky top of the mountain. Remember, you're in Maryland, and while this may not be considered a mountain in some parts of the country, it's the closet real mountain to Washington DC.
Hikes are easy to moderate and can take at least an hour or so to get up and back down. Paths are generally well maintained and wide so that hikers can easily pass in both directions. Views are spectacular. Many people bring dogs but I would avoid bringing an older dog, especially on hot humid days. Porta-Johns are available in the parking areas. This is a fabulous way to get some exercise!

Sugarloaf is easy to get to but also easy to overlook. I lived in the area for years before going to visit. However, others shouldn't make the same mistake! Not only is it beautiful on the mountain but the short drive off 270 is also lovely. There is no entrance fee. The maps are good and the trails very well marked, and there is a very nice variety of trails to choose from. You can drive close to the summit and just walk straight up. This might only take 15-20 minutes to ascend (depends on your group composition of course) You can also take a 7 mile loop hike, or anything in between as there are several intersections where you can switch trails. The trails are rocky and have steep sections but are in good condition and these hikes are not too much for anyone in decent condition, there were people of all ages out there the day we went. The actual roads heading up to the trailheads are not as well marked as the trails themselves but you'll find your way. There is parking and decent outhouses at each trail entrance, also picnic tables. There are multiple view spots from the trails (not just the summit) however the main reason to go in my opinion is for the feel of the woods. Give it a shot!

If you are in the area this is a great stop. There are some great views, nice hiking trails especially in the fall and this mountain has historical importance from the civil war. As and added bonus you are close to the sugarloaf winery. Enjoy!
