This was my second visit to Xitomate and it was the same as the first; great drinks ... so-so food. We met another couple for dinner and our server was either new or just ill prepared. It took him 10 minutes to get our drinks to our table and we had to ask him what the specials for the night were. At the time we were one of only four tables in the restaurant.

I was excited to find out that their mussels special was still on the menu only to have him return a couple of minutes later to tell me they were not. He kept referencing his iPad regarding the menu but he still made errors. Our food took forever and the manager must have realized it because he delivered the food that was cool to the touch.

This place is still fairly new so I may give it a third chance -- for happy hour.

Aside from not knowing where to enter the restaurant, overall we were happy with our experience at Xitomate. The extensive list of tequilas includes a helpful description of what flavor characteristics to expect from each - a nice touch. The salsa has the perfect, charred smokiness to it, and the chips, although a little thick, were tasty and fresh. Our very enthusiastic waiter was eager to point out all the attributes of the daily specials and how they were prepared. The entrees were hot and beautifully plated. The chicken mole was tasty, but I would have preferred bone-in chicken rather than the breast slices that were stacked to and fro. The chile relleno was simply prepared but very good. Now for dessert. If you are already full, order some anyway. We would recommend the sampler - dulce de lece cake, flan, and two churros. Just enough to put a lid on everything. Perfect. Then go home and take a nap.
