Description: Our Family has nearly a century old tradition of serving "Serious Barbecue." Andy Sr. Learned his labor of love from his dad, 'Guy Nelson' - Chief Barbecue Man for Limestone County, Alabama. In the 50's, Andy & Betty were not only attending Memphis State, raising a family, and sighting the real Elvis, but they were also developing a BBQ style all their own, integrating the spiciness of Memphis BBQ with the Old Nelson Family tradition. Andy's not famous for his championship years with the Baltimore Colts; he's famous for his hickory smoked BBQ. Ask Andy and he'll tell you that one of the secrets is slow cooking. Our BBQ is smoked many hours over Hickory logs until it falls off the bone, then simmered in our own heirloom sauce. Regularly voted "Baltimore's Best BBQ" by the staff and readers of Baltimore Magazine and the City Paper, this is one "Q" you won't want to miss. So let us take you and your guests down the Ol' Mississippi with great "Q" and maybe a little Elvis background music (streamed from Andy's iPod, of course). We recommend adding some of our Extra Fixin's to compliment your meal. We have been providing the Maryland area residents with the Best BBQ in a family atmosphere for over 30 years. We have been delivering quality BBQ to our local community and have never lost sight of what "The Best Q" means to our family and our guests. When it comes to BBQ, we make sure that everything is always made from scratch and everything always tastes perfect. I guarantee it! -Andy Nelson

We have eaten here a few times, it is a walk-up and order sort of place, then wait to get your food. There is limited seating in the main building, and more extensive seating in the outbuilding/garage (it used to be a gas station). There are also a few picnic tables in the parking lot.

We were hear for a gathering of friends associated with a hobby, and there were about 30 of us from 6-8 on a Wednesday night. It was fairly busy even without our group, but the staff was polite, and our order was process and food served in about 6 minutes.

Had a half-rack of ribs (wet) with two sides, and all was excellent, meat falling off the bone and delicious. Everyone else raved about their food, and we would easily have gone to very good/excellent but for one thing.

There were mice running around in the outbuilding area. We saw at least three at one time. Huge downcheck there.

We were surprised to find a bustling BBQ joint in this waterfront town, but not surprised that northerners like good 'que too. Nelson's offers an extensive menu including pork, beef, and fowl accompanied by any number of southern favorites. We selected man 'n' cheese, blackeyed peas, baked beans, cornbread, slaw, and fried tomatoes--all were excellent. The meat was moist and perfectly cooked. The sauce is vinegary and was a bitt on the spicy side for some in our group, though not a shock to seasoned BBQ eaters. Sauces of various strengths and constitutions are available. The atmosphere is noisy and crowded, with groups sharing tables. Outside across the drive is an old gas station converted to patio seating--a perfect spot for a cool night. All in all, an excellent experience.

Have been to Andy Nelson's Southern Pitt BBQ several times. All have been good. Very good menu. I try to get the brisket tips when they are available because they are outstanding. You can not go wrong with anything on the menu. Andy Nelson's BBQ has been around a long time because it is just a good BBQ place hands down. Go there alone, take friends or go as a family; this is a can't miss place.
