The crooked billet is everything you want when entertaining friends from the USA. The location, building and ambience are perfect for a relaxed evening.

We sat in front of the open fire under the low beams which all added to the charm. Throughout the evening the service was friendly and attentive and our friends wanted to take staff back to the organic restaurant they run in North Carolina. After recent experiences we appreciated not feeling rushed to give up our table for the next diners.

The menu is interesting and the cooking good if not fine dining, but then the portions are generous. The wine seemed slightly high priced but our overall bill was less than expected.

The crooked billet is great for a relaxed evening with friends.

Firstly find the place , but when you be it will all be worth it. Totally different to the modern gastro pub. Beautiful pub in lovely surroundings, great atmosphere and wonderful food. It's very oldie worldly but in no way a tacky way. Great service and friendly staff , highly recommended .

If you ever get a chance to enjoy a gig at the Crooked Billet, I would certainly say, do it. Its a wonderful evening, the place has its own charm, décor and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food is exquisite and mouth watering and is excellent value if you are after something special.

My husband and I enjoyed a meal there and heard of the gigs they hold, like next week we are seeing Chris Jagger there. You wont be disappointed I can assure you. It is a lovely evening, and to share a room with a rock star is awesome, especially when they are just a few feet away from you.

Having read all the great reviews we booked for the lobster lunch on the first day of our newly wedded bliss.

As others have mentioned, finding the place is an experience, basically the restaurant is located on two converging access lanes out of Stoke Row. On the day we visited the council, in their wisdom, had decided to re surface both lanes simultaneously thus cutting off all access to the restaurant. After standing around for some 30 minutes, a perspiring young man from the restaurant appeared, apologising profusely for the hold up, it was hardly their fault and shortly after the road was cleared.

It was still some half a mile to the CB so no wonder their emissary was perspiring, a nice gesture anyway.

The Crooked Billet is bohemian which is fine by us, it is not a pub it is a restaurant but it is sad to see two vintage cars a Rover & Citroen rotting on the edge of the car park.

Upon arrival we were shown to an excellent window table in the main dining area, which is a lovely double volume room. Our waitress was charming, the starters were great, but the lob ster was a disappointment, we had 1.5 between us and it was OK but not memorable.

It also took forever to be served, which may have been a spillover from the road works.

It was enjoyable but sadly fell short of expectation.

On a different note, having looked at their website, I see they are offering free Christmas lunches to elderly single people in their area ( naturally numbers restricted), a wonderful gesture.

Would we visit again - certainly
