“If you have to drive out of your way to get here, do it!”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

Unpretentious and tasteful setting on the edge of Chestertown, the chef here knows what he's doing. Presentation is lovely with the contrasting shapes in a mixed green salad- sliced radishes, diced jicama, julienned carrots. Shallot vinaigrette is light and a perfect compliment.
At dinner we got the salad and an assortment of small plates. The fried calamari/zucchini was outstanding- not over-breaded or over cooked, and the portion was enough for a dinner. They even used a clam shell to extend the plate allowing for a bigger portion. Also got the crab cake which was possibly the best I've ever eaten. No discernable filler, seasoned lightly to feature the
subtle sweetness of the crab which was so fresh I don't doubt it was caught that day. This place impressed us so much, we went back for lunch the next day. Scallops on a bed of grilled romaine and a tomato/mozzarella sandwich did not disappoint. Wish we had room to try their desserts. Front of house and wait staff also terrific. This place is worth a road trip!

“Best of Kent County”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

This is far and away the best we've got to offer in Kent County. No one comes close. Local and fresh ingredients, amazing soups, creative food, prepared by a pro. Never have had a mediocre meal ... superb every time.

“Take the locals advice - eat here”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

My wife and I went on a day trip to Chestertown to check out the history. We spent almost all day walking around the beautiful town, at each shop or historical site we asked the locals where they would eat if they only had one night in town. The overwhelming response was Brooks Tavern and they were right. Located in a charming old mill on the edge of downtown, this small restaurant has a lively bar and really exceptional food. My wife had Maryland crab soup which was thick with fresh vegetables and crab meat. Being a crab lover, she followed the soup with a crab cake made of lump crab meat with minimum filler and seasoned to perfection. I had the halibut special with rice cakes, fresh corn and beets. Everything was wonderfully prepared and presented. The halibut was topped with a mild tomato sauce and a large shrimp. Um-um good.

If you're touring for a day be sure not to miss the 250 year old private garden on High Street just one block from the river. It is open to the public and is truly beautiful. The day we toured the gardener was working and he gave us a private tour.

“Best Food in Chestertown!”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

I have eaten here many times, and it's easily the best food in Chestertown. The atmosphere is unique (in an old, restored mill building) and charming; and the food is made with fresh ingredients that are as local and as in-season as possible. In short, if you're a "foodie" in Chestertown, then this is the place you'll want to go, for sure.

“excellent dinner and very good service in converted mill”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

Recently, my wife and I, accompanied by our three adult children and their spouses, celebrated a family anniversary together in the attractive riverside town of Chestertown, MD. We went to Brooks Tavern for a celebration dinner during our weekend in Chestertown.
It was a great success. We were a group of eight people, which can be a challenge to get seating together without feeling crowded, or sent to a far-off corner of the restaurant. This was definitely not the case at Brooks Tavern. We had made reservations several weeks ahead. The person who welcomed us at the door was well informed about our reservation and what we were there to celebrate. I believe our host, who also served our table with great tact and skill, was the co-owner of the restaurant. We were shown to a table that gave us adequate room, and was part of the flow of activity in the attractive, open space of the restaurant. She took over from the first server when we had a question about the wine list - which she handled with obvious knowledge and sensitivity. The wine was so good that we soon ordered another bottle. The high standard of the wine matched the dinner. All eight of us were very happy with the dishes we ordered, which included a wide variety of the innovative and very well prepared dishes on the menu. The restaurant was busy, but neither crowded nor noisy. The service was attentive throughout the time we were there. It was an altogether enjoyable evening.
We highly recommend Brooks Tavern - whether for a couple looking for a special evening out, or- as in our case - for a family celebration.
