Lunch yesterday was my first meal at the Canal House in 30 years. The canal view and the ambiance were as great as I remembered, but the dining room seemed smaller. All window tables, dining room and bar, were filled on a cloudy Monday in early April. Service was prompt and friendly. Our Crab Melts were okay but a little heavy on the cheese and light on the crab. Draft beer selection was good, if a little heavy on the “lights”. We will return to try several interesting menu items; prices seemed reasonable.

After having been closed for years of renovations and upgrades, Schaefer's Canal House is once again open for business and is better than ever. The large dining area as well as the bar overlooks the wide canal which is often dotted with small pleasure craft and at times carries large barges providing the diners with a continuously changing view. Drinks from the bar are perfectly mixed and generous in proportions. The extensive food menu affords a choice of nicely prepared dishes. There is enough room to accommodate even large groups. The wait staff is very friendly and willing to please. Boaters can dock at the restaurant. An outdoor deck is an added feature making this restaurant one not to be missed. Banquet facilities are available in another building on the property. A large free parking area is a welcome feature.

When on a Sunday afternoon and the poace was half empty. No hostess to be found asked if we could sit anywhere and was told that we needed to see the hostess. The manager came to the front and said it would be 5 minutes for a table even with all the empty tables. When we got our table we waited 15 minutes no waitress so we left and when to Shaffers Canal House for a great meal. Tried it twice won't be back.

Very good food and a great view. We went on a Saturday night and it was packed, we received great service though. Make sure to ask for the seafood jambalaya, it is on their specials menu occasionally, and it is amazing!

For years Schaefers has been one of our favorite restaurants. It closed in 2005, and recently re-opened on Labor Day 2012. That is good news! We ate there for lunch on a Tuesday. It was not crowded, but there was a good crowd. The service was wonderful and the view of the canal is spectacular. The food was great! With four in our party, one had steak - it was fine, an average filet. The seafood was outstanding, especially the crab. I began with the cream of crab soup. It was delicious, with lots of crab meat. We also had the crab dip appetizer, and it was perhaps the best crab dip I have ever had. I then had the fried shrimp. It was tasty and cooked to perfection. Others had the crab cakes, and they, too, were great. I tried them, and I'd rate them as some of the best I have had. The prices are reasonable and the servings are large. In all, a great place to eat. The new owners have done a great job!
