We were excited to see that this place was open, giving us another option on the Chesapeake. We expected that a few kinks might need to be worked out but WOW, service couldn't have been worse. The cluster of girls standing at the hostess booth stared at us blankly as we approached, told them we were going to the bar and that was it. No greeting whatsoever. Got to the bar and it took about 15 minutes to get a drink (it wasn't overly crowded). The couple to the left of us asked if we would mind getting their drinks as well because they had given up. The 3 women to the right said they went inside to get their drinks because they had no success getting anyone's attention. After getting a drink, we decided it would be best to eat at a table because of the lack of bar service. In asking for our bill under the name (let's just say a common name like Smith), we were asked "Is that with an S???) Went to the hostess booth to get a table. Although there were tons of open tables, she took my name and said she would come get me when there was availability. My name was the only one on the list not crossed out (meaning already seated). She never came. Went went back to her and asked to be seated. "I'll try to find you a table". We went with her and said "there's one and there's one and there's one....". We were told they were already reserved. I asked for who. She didn't know but thinks there are people at the bar that might be waiting. We picked the table we were standing next to and asked if we could sit there. Not having a real reason why we couldn't, she gave in and "let us" sit. Still haven't seen a smile. Ordered drinks and food. The server had absolutely no knowledge about the menu items. She brought drinks, mine was wrong, she said she would go get it; never did. I watched her standing around playing with her hair as if she really had nothing to do. The food never came, a server never came back, we left money for the drinks on the table and left. You could hear the neighboring tables expressing the same dissatisfaction. Spoke with friends and co-workers that had also gone, and they had the same experience only some managed to get food but now wished they hadn't. This place needs extensive training and on-site trained management in order to get this place operating. Such a shame!!!

We've waited years for Schaefer's Canal House to re-open, but it was worth the wait. We were there for lunch on opening day (the Friday of Labor Day weekend) and again this Friday. It's been thoroughly renovated, but they kept the best of what we remember. For example, the furniture is the same wooden captain's chairs with carved seats ... very comfortable, especially for long meals.

The best addition is the deck that wraps around the sides and extends the entire width of the building. For those who remember ramps, steps and level changes ... forget about them ... the main dining room and the deck are all on one level. There is seating for 400 inside and out, but their kitchen is only adequate for less than that so they close sections to avoid disappointment.

Best of all ... the food is as we remember it! We've had salmon, a combination broiled seafood platter and lobster ravioli ... all were excellent. We sampled their desserts, salads and side dishes as well, but not the bar ... yet. You may recall that their bar was large and separated from the dining area, which we prefer.

We understand that the new owners have a well-regarded restaurant in Kennett Square and they are very "hands on" ... their facebook page has kept us informed as the renovations have proceeded. For anyone within driving distance of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, please give Schaefer's Canal House a try ... it's back and even better!
