“Great for Families”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We were looking for a short weekend trip for Father's Day, and this place exceeded all expectations. When we arrived, check in was easy and they gave us a complimentary s'mores kit for the little one (granted this is only when I mentioned that I saw the family before us get one, but still...a nice touch). Our room was clean and quiet, despite my initial concern of being on the main floor. The balcony on our room wasn't really designed to stand on, but the view overlooking the water was great.

This place is fantastic for kids--mine especially enjoyed the beach and the pools, even the golf cart ride to another part of the resort. We ate at the Blue Point restaurant for dinner, and the staff here is just awesome. The icing on the cake for us is that when they brought out the kids meals--they brought it out already cut up into little pieces since our kiddos are small. I had never before seen that at a restaurant, and was so impressed. It's a little thing, but a HUGE thing when dining out with children, and so I loved that they went the extra mile. S'mores by one of the outdoor fires was a big messy hit.

We didn't really utilize all the activities or amenities available, but all in all, we had a great time and would totally go back again with our family.

Spent one night here for a family boating get away. This property has everything you want and need. On paper it is a "yes" but for us it came up short on the architectural side of things.

Let's start with the positives, of which the are many. If you are looking for a full function resort for families, a business conference, a wedding, or reunion this is definitely worth considering. It has everything you'll need and want -- an extensive marina if you are coming by boat which we did; a very well equipped fitness center; a sixth floor "Regency Club" with expansive views; an array of pools and outdoor offerings such as a beach volley ball court, mini golf, live music, dog friendly accommodations, tennis courts, a beach with kayaks etc., multiple pools and Jacuzzis, and an indoor pool with a large movie screen to show evening films for families. The golf course looks very nice (did not play it) and runs along the banks of the Choptank River, hence having great views.

The staff was friendly and took ownership of helping with your specific requests as opposed to passing you off to others. The room we had was a "Petite suite" which was large and very comfortable for four adults. The amenities are complete and our rate was very fair.

Now for the things that didn't compell us. The property is so full of functions and situated so beautifully on the shores of the river that you expect a lot more architecturally. The building materials of brick and clapboard (might be aluminum siding - not sure) create an effect that undercuts the functionality. The interior decor is thematic and fine but given the location it could be so much more authentic and charming. But it is what it is --- which is a very nice second tier experience.

Notwithstanding, this property is worth trying and especially if you are coming with your family or a group....and by boat. Don't expect "an out of body experience" but do expect a nice time.

Room Tip: Get a water view and a high floor.....it is worth the nominal increase in rate.

Green Features: The hotel is typically Hyatt sensitive to sustainability.

This is billed as a resort, so prices will be higher than most people are accustomed to paying at other hotels. Nonetheless, there is no gouging. Prices are reasonable throughout the property, including the golf course. The course was in excellent condition and was playable for golfers of all ability levels. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. This is an excellent venue for an event or occasion, such as a wedding. Special room rates may be available for occasions, as was the case for the wedding we attended. The hotel also accepts pets.

The grounds and amenities are fantastic, however we had several small issues. The cummulative effect was an average experience. Activities sheet said the mini golf was open until 10 pm. however they locked the putters at 7 pm. They promote Black Water Paddle and Pedal, however the advertised sunset sail does not operate any longer. I do recommend taking the 25 min trip to St. Michael. It is a very nice little town. Take a sightseeing cruise on the Patriot on the Miles River. The paddle boat was out of service due to a broken pedal. There were children at the " adult pool". Our pool side server, served us 1 drink then closed our ticket out because his shift was over. Not that big of a deal, but he never sent the other server over as we requested. I ended up getting drinks myself. One of our rooms had a roll away bed in the room that had to be removed. I was also there during the Iron man and because of this the Waters Edge Restaurant only served a "protein" heavy buffet, no menu items. The surrounding area is nothing to write home about. Aside from 1 block in "downtown" Cambridge, the town is pretty dumpy. Service was average.

We enjoyed the resort. The view is beautiful, and they have set the grounds up so there are many ways to appreciate it. You can sit on a gazebo at the end of a pier, find private adirondack chairs near the golf course but away from the hotel, or lie down on the beach which is close by, but secluded from the noise of the pools. We rented a pontoon boat on site and were pleased with the quality of the boat and the service of the small marina. Breakfast there but it was great! The public areas were all well appointed and comfortable. Our only disappointment was that there were five of us, and we would have preferred a suite with two rooms, or two rooms that would have cost us less than $600. The cost of two rooms would have been a hundred dollars more that the one room suite, so we settled on the one room suite, which was lovely but did not afford us the privacy and sound-proofing we would have preferred.

What a beautiful luxury hotel - perfectly located by the Chesapeake. At night we enjoyed the a bonfire and movies by the pool. During the day, we walk on the pier or on the sidewalk path, along the golf course. Nicely maintained area.

Spent the weekend attending a conference, but I would go back for a romantic weekend away from home. Catered food was plentiful and fresh. Wait staff was very helpful.

I had a corner room - very spacious with a small living room area. Rooms were priced at $110/night.

Coffee shop - excellent fresh brew or made to order coffee.

Nice getaway!

Room Tip: Book in advance to get special pricing.

The setting of the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake is gorgeous, but the service stinks. The staff is poorly trained, and the front desk managers are extremely impolite. I visited the hotel for a triathlon event in Cambridge the weekend of 7-8 June. The hotel was supposedly catering to the participants of the event--several hundred--but denied grace periods for late checkout past 11am (even an hour or two) even though no one could possibly make it back before noon. By several accounts, the front desk manager on duty on the evening of 7 June was unbelievably rude. Meanwhile the hotel charged a 2 night minimum at $499/night even though many, if not most of the the event participants stayed only one night. When checking in, we requested a room with a view and were told by a front desk assistant with the worst attitude imaginable that nothing was available... only to find from another front desk assistant that there were several rooms with views available. Either the first person was clueless or dishonest. The cleaning staff didn't change the linens and did nothing more than make the bed either night. The front desk had to be contacted repeatedly to send someone to clean the room. Bottom line is the Hyatt Chesapeake charged Ritz Carlton prices and offered nothing more than Comfort Inn service. Next time, we'll stay in the Comfort Inn and save the money... and advise others to do the same.

Thank you for taking time to write your review. Regardless of any issue our guests have, we are in the business of authentic hospitality which, from your review, you didn’t receive and we apologize for this. You are correct that we, like many other hotels, have a minimum length of stay for race weekend and many other days throughout the year. You are also correct in that the hotel caters to the athletes as we are happy to offer a ‘carb dinner buffet’ the night before the race, bring in additional staff, open our market very early in the morning and make sure it’s stocked with what the athletes like yourself are looking for and we also provide a complimentary shuttle to and from the race site. Again, we apologize for the attitude of the staff as this is certainly not the level of service that we expect from our staff and nor should our customers. We will rectify this incident internally and provide additional training to those involved. We hope that we can earn your business again next year and we hope you had a good race last week.
