We have loved the South Mountain Inn for many years and made it our Special Occasion restaurant of choice for birthdays, anniversaries, out-of-town guests, etc. In more recent years we were disappointed by the level of service during some dinners, notably New Year's Eve. Unless we were served by the long-time, excellent waitstaff the service was far too casual and careless for a fine dining facility.

On this New Year's Eve we found a much improved situation. From the brand new and viewer-friendly web site to the superb service, it was a perfect evening. Our server was young but excellent, and nowhere did we see the slightly scruffy crew from years past. The best of the waitstaff was working to serve a busy dining room, the food was brought promptly and piping hot, the server was attentive to our needs but never intrusive, and the lovely Christmas lights were a festive delight.

There was an expanded Holiday menu, with excellent choices for everyone and a list of suggested wines.

This restaurant is a charming venue in a lovely setting, and now, once again, the food, the service and the ambiance are worthy of this venerable treasure.

After living in the area most of my life but never having been to the Old South Mountain Inn, we finally went there last Saturday night. Each of the dining rooms had a different holiday theme in the decor. We were seated in the "snow" room where snowflakes hung from the ceiling, snowmen and artificial snow were on the mantle of the fireplace which had a fire blazing in it.
I started off with the escargot for an appetizer since I rarely am able to get it. In a word, it was superb. The rolls and salad that came next were delicious as well. The salad was very fresh with an outstanding sun dried tomato vinegarette. We then each got a seafood entree, he the rockfish and the scallops for myself. Each of us were very pleased with our dinners which were rounded out with a bottle of pinot noir. Ending to the meal was a slice of key lime pie shared by the two of us, also yummy. The waitstaff was attentive without being obnoxious. All in all, it was a truly delightful evening and am hoping to go back in February for our wedding anniversary since it's a bit pricey to pop back there again anytime real soon. Pricey, but well worth it to splurge on occasion.

The food is always good here and the service is very professional-not many restaurants have this level of service anymore. The place is not cheap, though. I have been going there for over 20 years. Sunday brunch has a more casual tone and lower price tag.

The food is consistently good, although the menu doesn't ever change. I have gone to a Sunday brunch which was disappointing, but I've always had good dinners. Had the best steak ever for my birthday several months ago.

Lovely historic site with locally-known stories. The garden room is a new addition, and quite noisy. The property runs alongside the Appalachian Trail.

The day was dark & drizzly, but the Garden Room was warm and festive with holiday decorations.
We were there at opening at 10:30 a.m. and all was prepared. A very nice buffet and the service was continuous and prompt. Fruit & salads until 11:00 a.m. & then a delicious Bloody Mary.
Recommended.
