Unique restaurant in Bethesda with all the classic tapas, paellas and some more off-the-beaten path choices. This would not be a great choice for folks who are vegetarians or picky eaters. Sangria is great! The colorful restaurant is a bit loud, but not deafeningly so. And it also has a nice bar area for waiting or having a drink. Food was 3-4 bubbles but everything else pulled it up to a solid 4-bubble experience.

A friend and I decided to spend a night on the town and we ended up at Jaleo in Bethesda (had wanted to go to downtown place for three years -- but am rarely back in DC area)

Everything read deliciously --- but the flavors were generally muted and uninspiring.

Nothing really "popped" like I had hoped.

We went a bit overboard with the food ....

Spanish cheese with guava jam;
Rabbit confit with apricot jam;
Piquero peppers stuffed with goat cheese;
Roasted onions with pine nuts and bleu cheese;
Roasted bread with eggplant, sardines and red peppers;
Bacon wrapped dates;
Chorizo with mashed potatoes;

A lot of the food felt like it came out of coolers --- not out of a chef who was keen on making it snap.

Choizo had a skin and texture that reminded me of hot dogs
Eggplant was very cold and was mush --- we ate the sardines and red peppers on their own
The roasted onions were not roasted well --- no caramelization, no bite --- too little cheese to make up for it (it might as well have been labeled "cold onions")

Best: rabbit confit with apricot glaze/jam ---- gonna make this at home --- excellent pairing of flavors

Best: spanish cheese and quava jam --- good pairing --- cheese was melty and nutty --- went well with jam

Decent: piquero peppers and goat cheese ---nice textures, goat cheese was soft and powdery (a good thing) --- peppers sweet

Everything we ate had sweet overtones and the suggested pairing of wine (Cortijo) did not work to balance that out and was not very pleasing on its own (lacked any depth)

$100 + tip for the night.

Waaaaah.

Would I go back --- perhaps once more to repeat some of the good and try a few more --- but will be much more reserved --- but maybe not I'd rather save my $$ and hit a place that I discovered back home

I hadn't been to Jaleo in many years and it was well worth the return trip. The food was imaginative, delicious; a pleasure to revisit. Chef José Andrés is one of my favorites in the DC area and so far he's never disappointed.

Interesting tapas, interestingly prepared, delicious, just the right amount, just the right prices. Nice ambiance.

The tapas themselves are incredibly tasty. However, other tapas restuarants I have been to give you a portion that you could share with at least one other person. The portions at this restuarant are barely enough for one. This place is worth eating at but be prepared to spend quite a bit of money.

The location is exceptional as there are several very nice bars literally across the street.
