“Best in McLean”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Thia review is actually for the McLean outpsot of Assaggi. McLean , despite it's demographics is a relative reatuarnt wasteland. Asasaggi is one of the exceptions. Authentic, well prepared Italian with a nice wine list and warm service. Relaxed enough for a night with the family dressed in jeans, but special enough for a date night or anniversary. It's our go to when we want fine dining but don't want to head into DC or Arlington.

“Warm, Cozy & Inviting Setting with Good Italian Appetizers/Friendly Bar Service”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Meandered into this inviting Bethesda bar after visiting Arlington National Cemetery and the George Washington University Bookstore, familiar spots during our 1980s McLean, VA-Georgetown residences. Nearby at the bar, recognized DC political commentator & TV personality Tucker Carlson, and chatted with him & his 13 yr old daughter for a few minutes. Great guy, very friendly and funny. Then we 3 decided to sit farther down at the expansive, deep, rich brown lacquered bar and order a few Italian beers & hot expresso after walking around in the DC afternoon winter cold. Pleasantly surprised to be served my expresso in an Illy white cup, reminiscent of our wonderful Sept. 2012 Great Britain and Paris travels. Very attentive, friendly wait service at the bar. Talkative, cordial. Restaurant has a clean, inviting atmosphere with white table cloths within a pleasant setting. No dinner for us, so I can't comment on meals, but we did order some plated appetizers of olive ascolana ~fried meat-stuffed olives ($6) and peperoncini dolci ($5) ~ tempura baby sweet-bell peppers, goat cheese & basil. My 28 yr old daughter and husband enjoyed these 2 dinner menu appetizers, but I didn't ... guess caffeine and Italian appetizers don't mix for me.These particular appetizers appear to be tastier with several glasses of Italian beer!

“not worth your time or money”

Late afternoon Christmas, 2012. Avg food, very rushed service, asked to leave to free up the table less than 1 minute after paying the check. Will not go back.

“I don't get it”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

Have eaten here at least 10 times in the past year and I don't understand the negative reviews. They either don't understand what good authentic Italian food is, or else they are expecting a budget meal - Since I go to Italy about 6-8 time a year, I can tell you that I know good Italian food when I see it (eat it??). Assaggi is the real thing and the menu is superb, since it varies according to the season, plus when there is a "restaurant week" (which is frequent in Bethesda), you can get fabulous prices and selection, especially at lunchtime. Can also heartily recommend the "taster's table" if you have a party of 6-10 persons & are willing to drop a little coin and surrender your menu choices to the chef - you will not be disappointed, but don't expect red checkered tablecloths and overcooked lasagne or salmon w/ pizzaiola sauce!

“Third Time Wasn't A Charm”
Reviewed November 21, 2012 via mobile

We have been to this restaurant twice before. The pasta was excellent so with a Groupon we went back. It was hopping at 6:30, but we had reservations and were seated quickly. The temperature of the restaurant was either freezing or too hot because the front door is continuously opening and the foyer area is not walled to the ceiling. The bottle of wine we wanted was not available, but they did substitute a very acceptable higher price alternative without charging us the difference. That sounds like good customer service, but the service is very brusque and the servers were constantly running into each other. Pasta dishes are interesting and well priced, but don't expect Olive Garden size portions. Meat, poultry and chicken dishes are pricey. Meals are ala carte. The noise level gets progressively less tolerable as the evening progresses. I would very much appreciate restaurant management contacting me regarding this unfortunate dining experience.
