If your looking for good tapas, got to try Guardado's. Everything on the menu is just great plus they are always adding new items to the menu. The wine selection is good and priced reasonable.

“Hit and miss”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2014

Always nice to try new restaurants when travelling to places I've been to many times before. This is hidden away a bit from the main restaurant area in this part of Bethesda. Vegetarian options are pretty much limited to tapas (or paella), but at least there are enough options from the hot tapas menu. I tried 3 tapas dishes, the first, the stuffed red pepper, was excellent (and the only reason for upping my rating to 3). Very tasty and made me keen for the next 2 dishes, The papas frittas was very bland. Part of it was my own fault for thinking it would like patatas bravas, which we get in English tapas restaurants. Either way, it didn't taste of much, certainly not garlic. Same for the 'Spanish omelette' which is just an omelette, certainly not cooked or seasoned in the same way as in Spain, so that was very disappointing. Also, in Europe, Spanish omelette tends to come with at least some garlic mayo, so that would have helped to give it some taste. Service was hit and miss too. Took quite a while to even be offered a drink, and then became a little over-bearing. Not impressed with being asked for id either for a tasteless beer (I'm 43 FFS!) when I didn't see anyone else asked.

“Great food”

A small restaurant with really good food. They have a wide variety of tapas. All of the ingredients are very fresh. Fun place to go with friends and try various dishes.

“A hidden gem slightly off the beaten path”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2014

Guardados is in the Bethesda triangle, but pretty much at the edge of the restaurant area. We go there for lunch often, and it is quiet and welcoming. The waiter Tomas is great when asked for recommendations. There are luncheon specials (something new - under $10 and sometimes $7 or $8), but the regular lunch prices are relatively inexpensive even if you don't order one of the specials. The food is excellent, and pretty much prepared after you order (not ahead of time). The chef will make minor changes (e.g. using mushrooms instead of peppers). The staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient. I was told that they are very busy Friday and Sat nights, and they have live music (guitar) one night per week (Thursday, I think). I strongly recommend this if you are really hungry and want very good value for money. I personally like the Casear salad plus a sandwich, but usually have to take 1/2 of the sandwich home for dinner.
