“A Summer tradition not to be missed”
Reviewed July 5, 2006

Early July is always eagerly anticipated by our family, as it means our annual trip to the Stage Neck Inn.

We've been visiting the Inn during the Summer (New England roots draw us back each year) since the late 1970s. Every year it gets better.

The Summer experience has also brought us back many times during the rest of the year as well, with equally great memories and experiences.

The location; the food; quality; charm and the overall experience are outstanding. Second to none. And we've eaten and stayed in 5 star hotels and resorts throughout North America and Europe.

A taste of Maine with large measure of class. We're looking forward to another visit later this Summer- can't get enough of the Inn !!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Stage Neck. We didn't really know what to expect. We saw mostly good reviews, but we didn't know anyone who had stayed there so it was a bit of a gamble. The only truly negative review we read was from someone who didn't like the artwork or how the numbers were put on the hotel room doors (huh?!), so we decided to give it a try.

Our view was spectacular. Since it rained the entire time, the seas were very high and the waves were crashing with tremendous explosions against the rocks which were about 35 feet from our window on the harbor side of the hotel. If it had been dry, our balcony was large enough that we could have sat comfortably and watched the water with a bottle of wine for hours.

We found the hotel staff to be very accomodating and helpful. The maid service was late one day due to a mix-up. Someone in the room next to ours had requested privacy and the staff thought that it was our room. No harm done. We asked that our room be cleaned and it was done immediately along with a sincere apology.

Since we like to explore, we only did one night of the 4 with a meal package. Our dinner was really good as was the small, but high quality breakfast buffet. The property has a beautiful beach that would have been magnificent if there had not been torrential rain and highs in the 50's the entire time. The property is also central to the York area. Kittery is only a 10 minute drive as is Ogunquit (Perkins Cove) and Kennebunkport is about 20 minutes.

I would stay at the Stage Neck and would ignore bad reviews.

We just returned from an overnight stay on their midweek package that included dinner and breakfast. We had an ocean front room and the view was great. The room itself was rather small but well appointed. The food and service in the main dining room was top notch. The price for the package was quite reasonable considering the two meals are included with choice of menu. The prices of the rooms only especially in season seem very high and I would never pay to stay here in the Summer season.

My husband and I celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary at Stage Neck Inn. Many of our friends have stayed at the Stage Neck Inn over the years and highly recommended it.

We had the most tranquil weekend. I wanted to write and thank them for so many “little niceties” that made our weekend so enjoyable. Coming home after such a relaxing weekend we were both immediately caught up in the return to reality. After reading the review of the woman traveling with “her boyfriend” I decided to let the phone ring, the errands wait and sit down to write.

We found the décor enchanting and charming. The pictures in the hallway were photos of local people from many years ago. There were captions under the photos that captured your imagination. My husband loves history and we found the hallways and walls steeped in history.

The huge fireplace in the lobby added so much warmth to an already warm room. In one of our many conversations with the friendly staff we learned the painting over the fireplace is an original watercolor of the Stage Neck Inn grounds long before the Inn was built. (More history)

We were on the "getaway package" which included breakfast and dinner. I couldn't help but think how clever this package plan was. When you travel money seems to just disappear. At Stage Neck Inn the meals were taken care of.

The menu was impressive and had a wonderful variety of foods. We could order salad or soup, appetizers, entrees and dessert. I have to admit we left the dining room so full. My husband joked with the waiter and said if the food wasn't so good we wouldn't be so full.

We looked forward to each visit to the dining room. We were not let down. The service really was excellent. Every staff member we encountered had an inviting and welcoming smile. When we told the host it was our anniversary so he sat us at the “romantic table”. We smiled, but he insisted it was THE table for marriage proposals and hand holding.

Possibly the woman with her boyfriend may have had a truly wonderful weekend if she had been seated at that table.

Finally the other guests we met while sitting in the lobby or at the beautiful Sandpiper Grill Bar made us feel part of the Stage Neck family. It seems conversations begin with, “This is our ninth year coming here.” Or “We have been coming here every year since our wedding.” It truly is a tradition with so many.

Thank you Stage Neck Inn for a wonderful weekend. We can truly see why people return year after year. Next year we will begin our conversations with, “We come here every year.” Then we too can be part of the “time honored tradition” of the Stage Neck Inn family of guests.

Just read a review from someone who stayed at the Inn the same weekend we did. I felt compelled to write as I totally disagreed with the review. I understand they may have had a different experience than my husband and I. Let me share our experience with you.
Our weekend was perfect and we felt the staff were warm and gracious and made us feel very welcome.
We spent 3 days at the Inn with our meals included in our package. We enjoyed the indoor pool, sauna and workout room.
Starting our evening off with complimentary cocktails, a wonderful dinner and dessert by the fire. The atmosphere was romantic, relaxing and all I can say is the staff really pampered to our needs.
They always had a greeting or would check to see how our stay was going.
A snow storm occurred on Saturday and I believe the waitstaff were a bit overwhelmed as more diners stayed in to dine and had not made reservations.
Our server was apologetic and gracious about the situation.
The romantic music being played by the exceptional piano player, the snow falling softly outside and the right person to hold your hand across the table. Even if dinner took a little longer ...this was relaxing and just what a weekend away should be.
Thank you to the staff at the StageNeck Inn... we will be back.

My boyfriend and I decided to get away for a quick weekend trip up to Maine. Overall, it was a good experience, but there was definitely room for improvement.
Let's start with the good:
The location is terrific and the views can't be beat. Our room overlooked where the river and the ocean meet, and it was just gorgeous. The lobby of the hotel has large windows that you can sit by and read, or just gaze out at the ocean. There is also a beautiful fireplace in the lobby that is nice to sit by.
The rooms were a nice size and the decor was pretty. The beds were exceptionally comfortable.

The bad...
The staff sat there and chatting and we were ignored when it was time to check in. They litterally sat and complained about there lunch that day as paying guests waited?? Not good.
The artwork in the hotel deperately needs to be updated. Remember that gorgeous fireplace? There is a cheesy print above it and outdate lighting fixtures.
Also, the artwork in the hallways doesn't follow a consistent theme and looks like it was purchased at a garage sale. Very cheesy. The doors for the rooms remind me of the 70's and even the numbers on the door are very 'Motel 6'. I didn't pay for Motel 6, and expect better decor.
We did the getaway package which included dinner and breakfast. We ate at Harbor Porches and the service was horrendous. It was not busy that night but it took FOREVER to get our food, which was overcooked and dry. We sat there for about 20 minutes with empty water glasses too. The desserts were pretty good though. Breakfast was fine. It would be pretty hard to screw up breakfast.
I would recommend the hotel cautiously. If you are expecting upscale- this isn't the place for you. Also, avoid the restaurants. Not good.
