“Fun and different in a prime location”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

After a busy day in the York area, we visited Guac-n-Roll, a place we'd been to once before soon after it had opened. We had positive memories of it from last time, and were not disappointed this time around either, but it isn't perfect, and you shouldn't go in thinking it is.

The menu is a bit unusual for a Mexican place; you aren't getting your standard Americanized choices of "pick one of these standard fares and add rice and beans." You have a variety of sandwiches and burritos (served with chips and salsa), some salads, some nacho platters, and a few different tacos (just a taco, not served with anything). They also have chili, enchiladas, and fajitas, but we haven't tried those.

The black beans are smokey and tasty, and the overall quality of the food is high. The nacho platters are immense and old-school, loaded with goodies and able to satisfy a table of hungry diners. The burritos are big but nothing compared to the giant carbo-load platters you get at your standard places. The drink menu is a bit standard for a Mexican place, and I personally wouldn't mind a few more choices.

The service is friendly, but I wouldn't have minded a bit more attention -- drinks sat empty for longer than I'd expect. The atmosphere, though, is perfect. The artwork is funky and modern, yet still evokes the American southwest. The location is perfect, too -- finish your meal and walk over to the shops and beach.

Overall it was a funky little fun oasis from our surroundings, and we'll definitely be back next time we're in the York area for a couple days.

“Mildly disappointing food, lousy service, obese-friendly portions”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

Although we were looking forward to eating at this restaurant, it was a mild disappointment. First of all, some of the meals we picked were not that tasty; the burritos are loaded with rice and beans, but there's not much meat in there. The chicken is fatty and mostly dark meat. The portions are also way too big; some people will enjoy that, of course, but be prepared to feel like a pig when they drop your plate in front of you ! Our waitress seemed totally disinterested with us and never refilled our water glasses our asked if we needed anything. She also let us pick items that were obviously going to be way too big for our kids, without batting an eye or telling us so. The prices are competitive with other York restaurants. I would only return to this place for their nachos platters, which are quite good and tasty, knowing that they are large enough for two hungry adults.

“Uggh...”

We wanted to try something different in YB other than pizza, burgers and hot dogs for the kids since they do not eat any seafood. I had read some reviews about this place and they were not favorable but we decided to give it a try, hoping for the best. The steak fajitas were decent although we were charged for the extra tortilla breads we ordered. I would have liked to be told this before we asked for them. Our older child had the cheese quesadillas and said they were not bad. The real problem was my husband's tacos. He had the pulled pork and fish tacos. They were dripping water, it was insane. He ate the pulled pork one but could not eat the fish one. He sent it back and ordered something else. We were charged for only the one he ate. The waitress said it was from the salsa but he seemed to think it was from lettuce that had been put in his tacos wet. The service was "ok" at best. The waitress was hard to find when we needed anything. We would not go back to this place. There are so many better places to eat in YB and this place does not seem to care what it is serving. The kids who sit outside at the booth and are suppose to sit you should try to smile and be a little nicer.

“Lovely food! Fun atmoshpere!”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

Pros: Outdoor and indoor seating. Beers were cold. Server was attentive. Chips with salsa & guacamole - fresh and ample portion. Black beans - spicy and delish! Burrito tasty. Prices very reasonable.
Cons: chicken used for taco was all dark meat and very fatty. Not what I would have expected.
Would definitley go back but would ask more about the dish first.

Parking is across the street at the public lot. Bring quarters for the meters.

Good location, friendly staff, TASTY MARGARITAS AND GOOD NACHOS. What more do you need. This is a great place to stop in for a drink and a snack right in the middle of the York Beach village and only a minutes walk from the beach.
