Fantastic home-made (or hand-made) hard ice-cream. Perfect compliment to a warm summer evening on the Maine Coast. However, the price is high for compared to other local establishments. Within walking distance to the "Nubble" lighthouse.

Some of my family and friends swear by this place. I am not among them.

The lines here can be forever at peak times of the evening, with the parking lot overflowing in the high season (they recently added a satellite lot). Although you are near the Nubble light house, you have absolutely no view of the ocean, and can sit at some basic picnic tables on a gravel lot. Note that it can be rather buggy here after dark.

Although the ice cream is fine and the choices of flavors are nicely varied, it is by no means (this is an ex-upstate NYer who currently resides in the dairy mecca of Wisconsin speaking) anywhere near the top echelon of "home-made" hard ice cream. Graeters ice cream fans from the Cincinnati area would probably find this stuff to be generic in flavor and rather boring, for example.

Prices this year are what you'd expect in a tourist area: kiddie size $3.75 and regular cones/dishes are $4.50 a pop. It's cheaper than their sister ice cream stand closer to the Nubble at Fox's.

We ended up throwing our ice cream away! It used to be all made by Brown's and had no artificial ingredients. They no longer make any of their ice cream and it was "slimy" and lacked that creamy flavor that you only get from pure ice cream with no guar gum or other ingredients that supposedly keep ice cream "fresh". The flavor itself was mildly reminiscent of the very wonderful Checkerberry that I remember. Very disappointed!!!

Whenever we are in York, ME we never forget to stop in at Brown's Ice Cream! For as many years as I can remember it has just been a "must stop" on our York list. The only drawback is that on a warm Summer night you will have to stand in line and wait for your icecream (that alone should speak volumes) ~ BUT, it is sooooooooo worth the wait. Don't forget to stop at Brown's Ice Cream during your next visit to the Nubble Light House in York ME.
