We ate there on our getaway because it was the only place open early for breakfast and the food was sooooo bland it was gross! The maple syrup was fake and seemed watered down, the french toast had no taste at all and the toast was very dry

When we went here for breakfast we were the only ones there. We sat and ate our delicious meal and had a lovely conversation with Sandy herself! The service couldn't have been faster, and when one of us realized that we forgot to order our bacon she gave us a side order for free. The atmosphere is cozy- it's like eating breakfast in your own home!

We've been traveling to Southeast Maine for nearly a decade, but have often stayed at Bed&Breakfasts, so haven't had as many opportunities to sample the area's breakfast restaurants. We recently had breakfast at the Purple Palace in York and don't plan to go back.

The decor and the story are great and pull you in. The menu is varied and affordable (though the lack of pancakes is a real knock against it), but that's where the praise ends. We were sat quickly, our orders taken almost abruptly, and our food delivered hurriedly and impersonally. You might expect this in a crowded restaurant but we were one of three full tables on an early weekday morning. A little smile or conversation would go a long way.

The food was mediocre; my dish had dry home fries, soft bacon, raw onions, and soggy green peppers. My wife's was no better. Our server dropped off our check and didn't even ask how our food was, and never checked if we needed more coffee or tea.

For a business that has been in operation for over 6 decades, I'm a little confused over what this place is doing right. It isn't the food or the service ... must be the location and the decor.

(Oh, and for those with small children, there are no high chairs, just booster seats.)

Just around the corner from the Goldenrod; Sandy's Purple Palace, specializing in breakfasts - is absolutely wonderful. It's got an interesting history, the atmosphere is small but cozy (and purple)and the service is friendly and down-home. The food is also great, served quick and hot and delicious. We were in and out of there in about 35 minutes, (with two 5 yr olds in tow) and never once felt rushed. The word is that locals love the Purple Palace - there's almost always a line outside the door! But it's worth the wait for a fantastic breakfast.
