“Comfortable rooms, terrific host.”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

A group of us attended a Friday night wedding at the nearby Union Bluff Meeting House and needed a place to stay for only one night - not easy in York in the middle of the summer where most places have two-night minimums. The Chamber of Commerce suggested Bittersweet and from my first contact with Victor, I knew we had a winner! We arrived to beautiful grounds, airy, comfortable rooms (with very nice private baths), and a friendly, pleasant host. We returned from the wedding and spent a lovely hour or so chatting on the spacious porch where Victor joined us for a bit. Breakfast the next morning was wonderful! Homemade banana bread and to-die-for blueberry muffins, cooked to order eggs and bacon, fruit, and coffee - just what we needed! Incredibly clean! Super location just seconds from the downtown area. We're trying to plan a fall getaway. We will definitely return!

We stayed here for four nights and overall had a pleasant experience. It is a reliable and affordable alternative to some of the chain hotels/motels and beachfront places in the area.

Location: The B&B is conveniently-located and within walking distance to and from Cape Neddick Beach and Short Sands Beach and the Short Sands downtown/shopping area. It is a short 10-15 minute drive to some of the restaurants and sites around York and 15-20 minute drive to the village of Ogonquit. It is also a relatively close drive to the Kittery shopping outlets. The B&B is located along two intersecting roads which can get busy. We did not hear the passing cars or any honking from our room at night but I'm not sure about the other rooms.

Room: We stayed at one of the nautical rooms which was always kept clean throughout our stay. The room itself was basic but had its own toilet and shower. There's no TV in the room but there is one in the communal living area. It's a good size room for a couple. I'm not sure why some people complained about the room size and the layout. When you're in a place as outdoorsy as Maine, you won't be spending that much time indoors!

B&B: It's a relatively small B&B with seven rooms but as mentioned it is well-maintained and kept clean. It has a lovely porch from which you can have coffee/breakfast in the mornings and a nice garden.

Breakfast: Is very simple and basic, consisting of eggs, bacon, English muffin and toast, and blueberry muffin. I would agree with other reviewers that there is not much variety although we did not mind this very much during our stay given the number of dining options in the area.

Hosts: Ray and Victor were both friendly and accommodating, helping us get acquainted with the layout of the area and offering suggestions of places to see and things to do.

For $150 a night, you get what you pay for. It is not luxurious and they don't promise any extra amenities but all in all our stay was relaxing and we would recommend this place to no-frills travelers looking for a quick beach R&R in Maine.

This was exactly what it said it was, a bed and a breakfast. Plus, there was false advertising; the picture we saw of the b and b showed a lighthouse on a deserted-looking place. The actual B&B is on the intersection of two well-traveled roads.

The owners were friendly, and the room was small, as it was shown in the picutre. It was so small that the only place to put our suitcase was a small nook in the bathroom! There was a bed, two side tables and that's it! There was no tea or coffee to welcome us. No cookies. No offer of a cup of tea when we arrived.

Breakfast was some yogurts from the store, scrambled eggs (looked like just one egg was used,) and two small slices of orange. Everyone had raved about the homemade blueberry muffins in their reviews. We each got a store made blueberry muffin that was so tasteless it was not worth finishing.

The place was clean, and there were return visitors, but for us, we couldn't leave fast enough. Did not even stay for breakfast the next morning.

We recently traveled to Maine for a wedding in York Beach. We booked Bittersweet because it was the only place we could find a affordable room with a 1 night min. My wife and I arrived about 3:15 and had to be at the wedding by 4:45 so we didn't get to visit with the owner. He rushed us up to our room and gave us the quick tour. All was great we stayed in the Devou Room with a King Size bed. Loved the room the only downfall was it was by the road so traffic was loud in the morning. Not a big deal at all for us but some people may not like that.

Breakfast was from 8-10 and was cooked to order. Eggs, bacon, fruit, muffins, and yogurt. We had a cup of coffee and OJ on the front porch. Once breakfast was made they delivered it out to the front porch and we ate outside. It is a very nice area with plenty to do within walking distance. The town of York Beach is about a 10 minute walk and it has anything you want.

The grounds were gorgeous flowers, plants, and very nice yard. The rooms were comfy and well docorated. The breakfast was great. For the price I highly highly reccomend the Bittersweet B&B.

Room Tip: request a room in the back if you want a quite room

We stayed here on a business/ weekend vacation trip and were very happy. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Our room was a bit small, but very very clean and tidy. Breakfast out on the porch surrounded by the lovely gardens (the flowers smell wonderful!) was fantastic. And yes, the blueberry muffins, like everyone else said, are very good. We loved the location, too. It was far enough away from the downtown to be quiet, but close enough for us to walk to the restaurants, shops, and boardwalk. We look forward to coming back!

We just got back from a 2-night stay at Victor and Ray's beautiful, immaculate B&B. The location is ideal, just far enough from York Beach (5 min by car) to allow a peaceful night's sleep. Our favorite part was eating fresh-baked blueberry muffins and drinking coffee on the sunny porch. Victor and Ray are excellent hosts, we will definitely stay at Bittersweet next time we're in the area!

Room Tip: The King room is very good-sized, plenty of space for all of our adventure gear.
