We were passing by and decided to stop off and try the seafood. Pleasantly surprised by the lobster rolls and the clam cakes. Good portions, quick service. Nice open deck seating dockside. Very enjoyable.

We're Boothbay Harbor summer residents and have always enjoyed excellent food and service at Red's Eats in Wiscasset. Every now and then, though, we decide to give Sprague's another try, particularly if there's a line at Red's and none at Sprague. Last weekend was one of those times, and now we've finally had it with Sprague's -- the lobster on our lobster rolls was room temperature (not a good thing on an 89-degree day) and the fries were so heavy with dark grease that they were limp. The surly attendant who could barely be bothered to wait on us was the icing on the cake -- back to Red's we go.

Sprague's is located just across Route 1 from the well-known lobster shack, Red's Eats. We stopped here last weekend for lobster rolls, thinking that as competitors of Red's, they would offer a comparable product. No. The toasted rolls had completely unadorned lobster -- I know some prefer it that way, but we were not offered a choice. The amount of lobster was generous, I will give them that, but by the time we finished, we wondered if they were off-loading day-old (or longer) lobster. It was really the toughest lobster I have ever encountered (and I have encountered a lot of lobster), and afterwards my companion explained that he didn't eat one of the pieces because it tasted "off." My advice would be to plan a mid-afternoon, mid-week visit to Red's, when it is less likely to have a line around the block. The bottom line is you don't save any money by not going to Red's.

Since i had already tried a lobster roll, i thought i would take a chance and have a whole boiled lobster. it was just a plain lobster with some melted butter. trying to disassemble a lobster in that cold wind was less than entertaining, and trying to seperate the edible bits from the others was even less fun.

Stopped here for our first lobster roll on our trip up US 1. Excellent lobster roll-all lobster. You can request mayo on the side if you wish. Right on dock with plenty of tables to sit and enjoy the view and lobster
